Thanks so much for making this series! I just discovered these in time to prepare for a Christmas solo that starts singing a melody at the bottom of my range and then after the bridge pops it up the octave this particular warm up is going to get me in shape to make that so much easier to do with ease... and better for the audience to hear...ahem.

I manage to finish the exercise with little cracks on some spots particularly the ah and oh vowels. But each time I sing along the scale I feel my chords shaking or loosening up.This exercise is a hard one. I wont recommend this to a begginer. Over the course of time I allowed myself to be immersed in your technique and found significant improvement in my endurance, and flexibility. Before your technique I can hear my awful squawk at my passagio. Now the squawk sounds like a click. In this exercise I feel the click is somehow vanishing but when I forget my airflow engagement it comes back. I appreciate the slight cracks that I encounter here. Its not the same awful cracks as before, it made me really aware of my air and muscle engagement. For other beginner Tenors, I highly recommend that you go over Master Jeff's other warm up first before this. This is a bit advance. Without the foundation of resonance matching and airflow engagement , you will sound like a duck or even feel dizzy in this exercise. My minor cracks are funny but I manage to pull through. Sending my regards to Master Jeff.

Hi Jeff. Only recently came across your videos. Thank you so much for taking the time to make and post them. A couple of questions: Are the exercises appropriate for non-classical singers? I enjoy singing the songs of Bob Dylan, Wilco, Steve Earle, and others who don't have what I consider to be polished voices but who manage to convey their messages effectively through the unique qualities of their voices and phrasing. So I guess that's my question: Do you have any lessons that focus on developing one's tone and phrasing? Thanks again for all your efforts.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 7 лет назад
You're welcome! Thank you for your kind words! Well, yes in a way....these exercises are appropriate for all of us. They're meant to bring our singing to what I would consider neutral or natural tone production. From there, the natural colours and tendencies of your voice would emerge and you could make a choice to explore them more fully or remain more neutral and aligned. I have always taught lessons with the mindset that I am helping the artist to learn about their voice so that they have as many options as possible. To have that kind of control, vowel alignment and registration event technique are prerequisites. That's what the channel is largely about, establishing good sustainble technique that vocalists can then make their own artistic determinations about. Thanks for the great question! Jeff

Jeff I love your videos they help me so much... there is a high tenor vocal sound, heard when listening to bluegrass and old Appalachian Folk & Country, and BLUEGRASS in particular, That is called the "High Lonesome Sound"... best heard in the singing of Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Ira Louvin, Del McCroury, & Roscoe Holcomb ..ive never seen any lesson about it anywhere & want to ask you for one... this is the sound I am particularly after and would love some exercises and a better understanding of how to do this... thank you!

Hi, Jeff, I really appreciate your videos. I watched and used it for two days. I'm wondering if these videos are for musical singing or classical singing? I'm a young classical tenor. When I'm listening to myself while warming up I don't think I sound like a classical singer but somewhat like belting. Thanks!
@JeffRolka

My teaching is derived from bel canto technique (classical) though I apply it across genres. In general, however, the techniques are applicable across genres though laryngeal height will differ.

Hey Jeff! Love the lessons, I've been doing them for a while now and they are very informative. I was wondering what the purpose of the "Oo-ee-oo-ee-oo" is? I notice that this video stays right around G#4 for the most part but that exercise creeps up to A4. Thanks again! Preston.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 5 лет назад
They're really narrow vowels so if you modify as you cross the secondo passaggio you still stand a good chance of keeping the vocal folds adducted. Best! Jeff

I know this is an older video, and maybe this has been covered somewhere else already. (If so, my apologies.) Is it common to have trouble "letting go" of the final note at the end of each passage? I seem to have to force myself to stop - my inclination always seems to be to let that last note just fade out on it's own, and I kinda feel like I'm having to fight that on each passage, regardless of what I'm singing at the time. It takes conscious effort to stop the note at the end for me.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 2 года назад
I don't really talk a lot about releases. Letting it fade out though, I wouldn't necessarily recommend. Try to release the pitch at the end of the phrase by beginning your inhalation as preparation for the next phrase. In the context of these exercises, but specific about when you do it for each repetition of an exercise. Best, Jeff

very long passages (speaking of the second set of exercises) requires work for me.
@danbutler4630
@danbutler4630 5 лет назад
Hi Jeff, I find my vocals get very tired in this exercise and I start having trouble keeping my notes clean and by the end I struggle to even achieve the scale. I can however come back with the oui oui's :) My voice breaks around the g-g# and I always struggle to get these notes clean, but I can sing in head voice, although it can sound strained. So my question is; does this sound like a technique issue or do I just need to continue practicing your video, but maybe back off intensity until I don't get tired anymore? I love your work and practice it everyday. So any advice will be keenly implemented and so very gratefully appreciated!!! Thanks, Dan
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 5 лет назад
From the way you're phrasing things, it sounds as if you're trying to use your thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice to far above the secondo passaggio. This video specifically goes to that area, so perhaps try using some of the other tenor videos that do not have 'full range' or 'extended range' in the title. Most tenor vocalists will have a registration event at or around f-g4. By using the videos that do not go over that area (ones without 'full range' in the title) you can get a sense of where that transition point is. Move back to the 'full range' videos after awhile and practice transitioning across it. You can also check for technique by having a look through the singing technique playlist. Having never heard you, I can only hypothesize based upon what you're saying, but the way you phrase 'my voice breaks around the g-g#' is what suggests to me that the registration event is being over-looked. Thank you for watching! I hope this helps! Jeff

@@JeffRolka Thank you jeff!! I will do as you say, I have also gone back to your how to sing in head voice videos, to try it all again. If I back off on the intensity of my vocals the change happens easier, but the tone quality of my head voice is not great. As a birthday present I maybe receiving some lessons with you, obviously through skype (unless you want to come to Australia ;)) Is it possible to asses what needs to be done in my lessons with you, and then take the work I need to do back to my teacher here? Thanks again for all you work!!! Cheers, Dan

So I was doing fine until I hit the E4/Eb4 where my chest and head meet but the head gets all crackly (almost fry like) and it’s comfortable but it sounds awful. Like I put fry in it but idk what’s happening. If I go higher in that “registration” though, it becomes a strong head voice but from E4 to Bb4 it sounds all screechy like a velociraptor lol.
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 6 лет назад
The crackle or fry is one technique used to keep the vocal folds adducted crossing the secondo passaggio. I don't recommend it except in special circumstances. I would suggest trying some of my high range technique videos - I approach it a little differently. It may help you make the transition area a little smoother sooner and with less overall vocal fold engagement. Best, Jeff
