Red Dead Redemption 2 taught me the difference. With single action revolvers you have to press the trigger button twice. First to cock it then to fire while double action revolvers shoot right away.

Single actions are guns that have a trigger that performs a single action: to release the hammer. On a double action the trigger bothh rotates the cylinder and releases the hammer. Guns have evolved to have hammerless revolvers but the term double action stuck.

Some magazine fed pistols feature a double action mode, such as the Beretta m9 and Walther PPK. Sometimes I’ll conceal carry in double action mode, as the heavy trigger pull acts as a safety.
