Receptionist at Andertons: Hello, Andertons. Paul Reed Smith: Is The F##king Captain in? Receptionist: One moment, I´ll see if he's in. The Captain: *last seen running for the door* Receptionist: Sorry Paul, he's left the company
Maiiviioth, So you're saying the captain intentionally jeopardized his relationship with PRS guitars? Use your head... And until you do a blindfold challenge yourself - you don't know anything.
Let's do remember it was based on 20 second samples, mate. I need far more than that to connect with a guitar, good or bad. Fun video, but there you have it :)
@Landslide 100% disagree. As I pointed out elsewhere, I have a Gibson LP Traditional in Wine, and a PRS Custom 24 in Charcoal Burst, and the PRS is FAR better looking. It's likely a matter of personal preference, because I had to look long and far to find an LP that didn't look like it sat in a smokey pawnshop for 30 years with the yellowed aging nicotine fade that they seem to put on 95% of them. If you're a guitar traditionalist, I can see why you might prefer the LP, but as a work of art, most of the PRS's I've seen are just gorgeous. I saw they actually did a display of PRS guitars at the Musical Instrument Museum to show how amazing some of them were.
Dear people of Andertons: Blindfold Challenge. Fanned frets, true temperament frets and both combined(optional), evertune bridges and other stuff of that sort. Don't tell the guys in advance. You're welcome.
the big trends these past few years among artists is the use of Evertune bridges and Fishman Fluence pickups. I'd love to see some coverage of these technologies.
Lee sweating bullets as he think of Paul R. Smith watching this... ..."That's it, pull all our stock from Andertons! And tell that f*&ker to send that Singlecut back to me pronto! It was a B-Stock anyhow..."
You should give him every guitar two times. Give him all of them once and then change the order and repeat. I think otherwise there will be Kind of a bias with grades going up in the course of the video. Also would be interesting to see if you guys will rate the same guitar in the same way both times :P
andrew buckley So true. What I found interesting is the initial top three were extremely close: 8.1, 8.1, 8 but Lee's L8LP was initially third, albeit by a whisker.
Maybachs are cool guitars. Not to be compared with Epiphone or other overseas manufacfured. They are all with nitro finishes and highend components such as Amber and Kloppmann pickups.
Yea, so we can have Lee sit there and try to guess which guitar he's holding instead of giving it an honest rating. That test was bullshit. He sat there and tried to guess the identities of the guitars by feel, and he obviously knows a Les Paul's shape, pick guard, etc. That's why he gave the Epiphone such a high score
blindfolding Lee is a great representation of what we might think of guitars if we didn't have our eyes. It contrasts with Chappers knowledge super well. When I watch Lee, I know he's going to mention all the things I would possibly look for in playability and tone. But watching Chappers is almost for pure entertainment. Great vids fam! Keep it up!
Matthew Szerlag still works good. Stays in tune pretty well too. Even after it’s been like a week(?) or so I’ve played it. Probably cuz the last guy put chrome tuners on it instead of factory. Idk. But hey if it ain’t ur style man it ain’t ur style
The trick is to stretch the strings out when putting new ones on. I also find that tuning up a pitch and letting it sit like that overnight really helps. Stretching strings is always a good idea, but unlike strats, neck throughs and single cuts aren't as forgiving if you don't stretch them. Also, locking tuners are basically a must
I've stumbled across a Maybach Lester 57 in a shop and cherry picked it over a dozen Les Pauls Standards, the hardware on it is fantastic and the amber pickups sounded better than anything else I've heard. A really good alternative brand to Gibson
That test was bullshit. He sat there and tried to guess the identities of the guitars by feel, and he obviously knows a Les Paul's shape, pick guard, etc. That's why he gave the Epiphone such a high score.
I think they've got it wrong. Lee said that he didn't like the sound of the LTD. If he follows through on that excuse he could get himself out of a lot of hot water.
In fairness for the PRS, Lee gave lower scores at the beginning and higher towards the end after he played the one ending up his favorite. So maybe this is just a trend due to the experiment.
Good vid. Maybe though you should have given Lee a LTD with Seymour Duncans or Fishman rather than EMG's seeing as he said previously he doesn't like the sound of them. Hence the 'It plays ok I don't really like the sound' comment. Very much looking forward to more of these though.
Just bought a Maybach Lester after directly comparing it to a Gibson '59 Les Paul and another Gibson LP priced at € 2700 . Not much difference to the '59 but much better then the other Gibson LP . The Maybach is great and anything but overpriced. I think personal taste plays an important role in the decisions.
Lol did he just said that the Maybach felt like a high end Epiphone ? Isn't it convenient that Gibson guitars score 2 out of 3 he likes the most..... All I have to say to this topic is : my guitar teacher is a really big snob when it comes to guitars and I bet he owns at least enough guitars to hit the 180k mark ( 10 of those said guitars are high end Gibsons) speaking of True Historic , CC and so on. Now the same person owns at least 5 Maybach guitars and told me he can barely tell any difference ( neither do I ) except that the relicing on Gibson still looks nicer in his opinion.....
Love Lee but its a bit tiring playing context-less G and D chords all the time. Lee, you need to learn some music (with best intentions :) ) and apply it to your playing. Don't be afraid of music theory, its your friend!
When you are scoring on scale such as this that tends to happen. You see it all the time with teachers scoring students tests (hence they go back and review the first set of tests after then finish the full stack) OR you see it a lot in creative concept testing - in movies, advertising etc etc.
What they should do is have Danish Pete play the guitars with same chords and riffs while Rob and lee and Pete are all blindfolded. They should also write their votes instead of saying score out loud until the end.
Must say you were a little hasty concluding on the Maybach. As the Norwegian dealer down below says, they´re really good guitars. Having owned 3 (still got one) and also both two R7, one R8 and an R9 as well as a CS Bonamassa aged LP, I honestly think Maybach matches them all. except the Bonamassa (which is the most stupid guitar sale I´ve ever made!).
Time for the Dream Team : Danish Pete, Tom Quayle & Lee Wrathe. On the bench for additional humour: Paul Glover. Not one one-trick pony between them and all bases covered.
I don't absolutely think Maybach are comparable to high end epiphones. Maybach Lesters are ultra high quality and even relic, kind of a version of a custom shop gibson, for the price of a standard gibson.
Challenge suggestion... bring in an equal number of your personal guitars and while blind-folded, try to name that guitar - this is for both Rob and Lee...
I like the sound of the maybach lester but they weigh nothing in comparison to a Gibson, so they feel a bit weird. The maybach teles are the best teles ever (they feel like custom shop fenders). Haven't had the chance to try a stradovari maybach yet.
8:47 - this is flawed. He should have gone through all guitars again and rated them again because it's apperent, that numbers went up in the course of testing!
yeah, he picks his own guitar in the end. Proof that he's used to playing Les Pauls and likes the feel. Most of us would do the same if we spend any time on our favorite.
Completely disagree on the Maybach. We stock them here in Trondheim, every guitar they deliver is really, REALLY good, and they are incredibly popular! But, each to his own I guess! :)
I owned a Gibson ‘52 Tribute, R8, R6 and a Collins 290, before I bought my Maybach. That’s a keeper for me. Love the neck, weight, pickups, and finish (gold).
you should definitely get the maybachs. maybe this one isn't the right one for you but i've played several of them and they are all absolute gibson killers. same for the eastman les pauls. maybe eastman is even better then the maybach. check them out!
A couple mistakes at the end: - the Gretsch did not score higher than the PRS. the Gretsch was a 5/10 and the PRS had 6.5-7/10. - the one that Lee didn't like the sound of was the LTD, not the PRS. he didn't say anything about the sound of the PRS. Either way, fun video. Editing is on point as always.
Lee's '58 is acually THE tone of a Les Paul. I've never heard any LP sounding better than his.... ...or does it just sound a bit like my significantly more affordable LP?
Maybach. I agree. They are super nice. I had one (I only play super strats these days). When I will get an LP again (bound to happen some day), Maybach is definitely on the top of my want list. They have a custom shop version too.
Concearning the Maybach, I only have one of them and I have to say, I love it! I prefer it over my Gibson Les Paul Standard from 2017. Maybe I've ended up with a good one (no idea when it comes to consistency). I'm not a fan of the relic thing, but I'd still pick it up over my other high ends like the LP and my PRS.
My Maybach 59 Lester is better sounding and playing than any Custom Shop / Collectors Choice Les Paul I’ve owned and retails much less… stunning guitars
Please explore selling Eastman guitars. I’m sure you’ve heard from other people but these are extraordinary guitars. Their electric and acoustic lines. Their new solid bodies are spectacular - and fairly priced. And, no I am not a rep for them, I just own a few.
I posted this on another video, but you might be paying more attention to this one. You guys should do a review of the Ibanez AR420. For a cost of GBP529 ( www.andertons.co.uk/ibanez-ar420-vls-electric-guitar-in-dark-brown-sunburst ), and given its interesting switching (two super58 humbuckers, each with switching to make it wired in parallel, series or coil split) and its great aesthetics (burst, flamed bubinga top, rosewood board), it's well worth taking a look at, particularly as you look at some of the lower priced guitars from epiphone, prs, etc.
What's more interesting about this is the shift that occurs when something like a sense is impaired/removed. Contrast and compare to experiments with the way that perceptions of the taste of food vary according to different lighting, or colouration added. The way that wine experts were fooled by adding red dye to white wine, and describing it in all the terms that are usually used for reds. Humans are complicated things, and are fooled all to easily, when usual conditions are changed.
“Paul: Lee, the agreement you signed thinking it was shipment received when I gifted you this greatest guitar on earth that’s got to stay in tune and play in tune, stated any video featuring this perfect guitar shall be taughted as the best instrument in the milky way. Therefore sense you have decided to breach this contract, you are required to either A) ship the guitar back with all original equipment and pay a %25 restock fee. Or B) send us 5,000 quid. Thank you, PRS management.”
To be fair, playing a guitar for 15 seconds is hardly enough time to get a good feel for it whatsoever, especially if you’re not playing anything but chords down low on the neck...
I don't exactly like the sound of my favorite guitar. I like how versatile and durable it is, and I know how to make it sound good. Needs a refret too, which is a major part of why the sound isn't #1.
OMG, that intro music worried me that The Captain and Chappers were going to come dancing out from one side in grass skirts. Thank you so much for not subjecting me to that!!
It's awesome that they did not edited this video.. just to please Paul :) I have a PRS SC58 and a R9 Gibson: both absolutely great instruments, and one day my #1 is PRS, another Gibson. Gibson has always an instant good sound, but overall PRS is IMHO a slightly better and better made
after witnessing Chappers insertion technique, I have to say,,, HIS POOR WIFE!!!!! also, blindfolded semi-hollows, Gibson, Epiphone, Gretch, Guild, and there are several others that are available from the website.
I finally had a chance to play a PRS 594. First, the neck was absurdly fat (and yes, I like fat necks.) I own a Tele and 335 with '59 neck profiles and the 594 neck dwarfs them - just unnecessarily portly and uncomfortable. Second, the 594 looked amazing but the feel of the finish was...plastic-y? Not at all like the 'glass' feel of my old Custom 22. Third, the 594 sounded.. meh. Kinda thin and nasally. I thought it might be the room or my mood so I tried a garden-variety Les Paul Traditional and BLEW IT OUT OF THE WATER. Tone, feel, sustain...vibe. I own both PRS and Gibson guitars and my high hopes for the 594 were dashed to say the least. Great video btw.
In all fairness, Lee played them like you would brush a strat.....so gently, epiphone probably doesn't sound much different than a custom PRS....until you peg everything.
FWIW, I thought the Maybach sounded amazing. The Epiphone, Pete and Lee's LP and the Reverend were the best sounding. The ML and the Maybach were close. The ESP was a little thin, but still good and the PRS was just too thin, even though I generally dig both those brands for the music and amps I play. The Gretsch just sounded like a toy. Too bad you couldn't have included a Schecter in the mix. Once I got my Schecter I kind of abandoned my LP Custom.
Hey Captain, I just saw on Gibson's website two new models: Modern Flying V and Modern Archtop, will we see them on the show? Maybe a comparison with their 'not modern' pairs? Thanks!
Well not all guitars sound the same (obviously) with the same amp set up. I liked the clean of the PRS but when distorted it sounded a bit bright (not as fat as the LPs). The LPs sounded great the way the amp was set up. For my taste, the 58' was #1, Pete's #2, PRS #3, Chapman's #4.
These kind of challenges basically come down to personal preferences, not necessarily quality of builds. For example, if someone handed me a Ten Top PRS with a wide/fat, I'd dismiss it. When you're blindfolded, one's personal preferences become even more acute. You can tell Lee loathed that ESP with the EMGs because historically, he doesn't like actives and it was apparent. Choosing the Epi over the PRS in the end, isn't a knock on the latter, it's just what speaks to him. Using another analogy, someone weened on small radius Teles isn't likely going to choose a $4K Jem.
Yeah they totally fucked up the end with the PRS. He gave the PRS a maybe 7 not a 5. He didn't like the sound of the LTD not the PRS. Shame on you Andertons folk for deceiving Lee. Also, the Chapman sounds awful.
