I have always liked it in the opposite side because it helps out with my balance. But it is cool to hear about research looking at this.

I always wondered why it felt so different, and thought it was just a preference thing. thanks for breaking this down

wait im confused. you said the study said holding weights in the opposite hand targetted the gluted more, but when you demonstrated you were holding the weight in the same hand as your leg - do you mind clarifying?

I thought the same!

He demonstrates both. Holding the weight in the opposite hand targets the glutes more. And holding the weight in the same hand targets the hamstrings more. He expresses that both ways are good. And he demonstrates both. 😀

You are correct . I watched it about 5 times because my mind was processing what he said in conjunction with what I was seeing

@jessicaduran8698 thank you for clarifying. With the video with the man, he says the opposite- I don't think he meant that though. 😊

Guys this is simple. Try both. Youll clearly see which one targets the glutrs more. Dont need research to show me that.

True but I didn’t even know holding the weight in different hands was a thing as the instructor video I watched I didn’t even notice the weight was in the opposite hand 😅definitely my error but if you are trying something new it’s easy to miss things even though you think you got it down.

Yes! 🙏🙏 I struggle with balance using the bsame side and have always done it on opposite side (and I need to target my glutes more than the hammies...so 😊)

The same concept as a b stance RDL and a b stance Hip Thrust…Makes a lot of sense🙏🏻

I always found the same side easier for balance but if both are the same for the hamstrings but opposite hand is better for the glutes, than let's go to the last version, the contralateral one.

I wonder how big of a difference it makes to do single leg deadlifts like this vs. a b-stance deadlift? I prefer these better, but my program prescribes b stance dead’s instead.

It might be that single leg hip thrusts would be the same, if this is the case. Don't know what the most comfortable way to load that would be, though.

Ive always wondered this! Thank you. Would it be the same for lunges and bulgarian split squat for example? I tend to do lunges / split squats holding the weight with the opposite hand of the working leg. (Does that make sense? 🤔😅) im unable to hold both weights so use one.

It works because your glutes have to stabilise your hip to counterbalance. If you cheat by holding onto a handle it negates this benefit.

Shows graphic with highlighted results of weight on the contralateral (opposite) side of the body beinging better for the booty while at the same time narrating results saying that contralateral (opposite) side is better for the booty so that the written word supports the spoken word. Then immediately shows clip of people exercising ipsilaterally (same side) and says that is the best way to develop the booty.

well that's like not holding anything at all, it cancels out. Not one side is prioritized, so best of both worlds aka mix of both glute and hamstring work.
