Single-strand knots (also known as fairy knots) are small knots that form along the hair strand, especially in curly and coily hair.
Since coily textures shrink significantly, the strands condense and create even more knots. Single-strand knots can be worsened by improper maintenance and care which is why it’s so important to have a routine that caters to your hair’s needs. Although single-strand knots are almost inevitable as a curly natural, there are steps you can take to reduce the damage and breakage that’s caused by them
🔹How to prevent single-strand knots
The best way to get rid of single-strand knots is prevention. Prevention is all in the routine that you follow which in return, significantly reduces the damage they do. As you take these steps to prevent single-strand knots, you’ll see them appear less often and they’ll be easier to manage if one does show up.
🔹 Once a knot forms, unfortunately, it must be trimmed off. When cutting the knot off, make sure to use sharp shears to prevent split ends and unnecessary damage. Having a regular trimming schedule is important and usually takes care of the knots before they get out of hand, so keep that in mind.
We know that single-strand knots can be frustrating but with the right products, tools and techniques, they can be reduced and less of an everyday pain.

I have waist length 4b/c texture and I hate these knots with a passion. I am tender headed. My texture + hair length + scalp tenderness makes the whole hair wash & works day extraneous. I’m talking an at least 5 hr process. When I do my trim I do my best to look out for them. I don’t know how to prevent them either. No matter how much I detangle in small sections, going from ends to scalp gently. I notice I have so many of them when I trim my ends. It’s like a little fairy came and tied my ends. I trim the know off individually as as I trim my ends

The tighter the curl pattern the more this will happen. It’s extremely hard to prevent because the hair is in its curly state most of the time and it could happen even while you’re detangling your hair . It’s like those curly phone chords from back in the day. 😅 They always seem to tangle and knot up even after you’ve untangled it multiple times … the Cysteine smoothing treatment can help you have quicker wash days. It really help with the manageability of the hair while strengthening it and giving your hair the amino acids it needs to thrive ! Follow me on ig to see more detailed videos. @savedbythestylist

Yes. I understand and know exactly what you mean. My curls are so small. I compare them to the small springs that you find inside of a pen. So that and having very dense hair (probably enough for 2-3 people) would not help prevent those little knots. I will definitely check out your instagram. Thanks a bunch!

Imo, you can’t prevent ssk, but you can minimize them. I shampoo, condition, and detangle my hair downwards, do low manipulation styles , wear a satin scarf every night, and while I still get ssk, I get significantly less. I also search and destroy when it comes to my trims, meaning after I trim the ends, I go section by section and cut any strands that have a ssk. It doesn’t take much time, and like I said, I’ve gotten very few ssk doing this routine compared to when I didn’t do anything in particular which was a mess because my whole head had ssk on practically every strand.

Yesssss!!!! I HATE these things with a passion 😤! In my journey, I’ve found that blow drying my hair works WONDERS!! Not spraying my ends with water truly helps. I use braid spray and oil for my scalp only, then I apply a leave in, oil or grease (depending on the season), and NP coconut oil restore gelee to my ends. Doing it this way have allowed me to see soooooo much growth! I wear my hair in mini braids in the back and cornrows in the front in a high bun in the summer months (Feb to Oct, cause I live in New Orleans), and in the winter months (Nov -Jan), I wear about 6 cornrows with a low bun. Been doing this for a year now and the growth is AMAZING 🙏🏾🙌🏾💯

If you have curly hair fairy knots are normal therefore if you’re taking care of your hair and retaining length you have nothing to really worry about because they are bound to happen with curly. I have thick coarse waist length hair and I have them everywhere😂😂

Don't break them. If anything cut them. But i watched a stylist on her who does naturals and he said they're not anything to really stress about. It's kind of inevitable when the hair is constantly worn in its curly. Also, another stylist i watch says to brush your hair often if you can. I dry brush my daughter's hair with either an oil (like castor) or a serum. This wjll help with that or even blowing it out from time to time. It seems to make a difference for her and she's got some coily hair
