This is a design I have been thinking of for quite some time. I've finally built it. I reduced the gains until the servos settled down but now need to increase them. Especially the yaw gain. Overall, it worked much better than I expected. The motors were a little hot so I'm reducing the props from 9x5 (came with the setup) to 8x4.7 and try agian.

1 - Contra Rotating BL 1550kv motors

Some 2" ID PVC pipe (1/4" length), 1/4" cutting board, screws, nuts, BBQ skewers and Blucor foamboard.

Very interesting and uniquely clever, which stays true to your trademark! Orientation is no easy matter given the form and regardless of the mishap, I call it a complete success.

+the1realanalogman Thank you. I now have a full fuselage built. It is a mock up of a News Drone similar to the one in Back to the Future II. Video to come when the wind and rain decide to take a break.

Excellent project ... very similar to the coax helicopter I used to play around with except this uses servos for thrust vectoring as opposed to a cyclic.

+tsisapik Thanks! I'm already thinking of ways to do the same thing with two separate motors instead of using a contra-rotating motors setup. I tried with control surfaces a few years ago but the control surfaces had a hard time coming off the ground (even with standoff), and keeping up enough to balance. This has no problem with either.

+Carl Bradley Hi Carl, I noticed when it corrected for pitch then roll in light wind, it caused it to yaw because the prop that was suppose to counter that was actually pulling in the direction of the yaw no matter how much I increased the Yaw gain. I have an idea about having the upper rotor being on maybe a pitch and the lower on the roll or the other way around. For now, I plan to go conventional with control surfaces

Hey great project! I was looking at building something very similar to this, but have the motors on the bottom so it balances a bit like a rocket!

+Co Chrigui Hi Co, I do not. But if you go to 0:36 in the video and pause, you can see how I built the gimbal. I used a 2" PVC pipe for the outer ring that tilts for pitch axis from the two pieces of ply on either side. I used a piece of Delrin from a cheap, 1/8" thick cutting board for the center ring / motor mount that tilts on the roll axis. If you have not already done so, please subscribe! +NanoRobotGeek I'm using the Singlecopter 2m 2s for 2 motors (controlling yaw) and 2 servos (controlling pitch and roll).
