Coaster brakes are also known as backpedal brakes, the braking is applied by rotating the pedals in reverse until the brake engages. Hate it or love it, there's no need to install brake lever or shifters on the handlebars.

The chainring is 38t and the sprocket is 18t, therefore, the gear ratio is 2.11.

There is only one problem, the width of the hub is smaller, so the axle will bend in a short time, and the bearings will fall apart.

if you hit the brake harder, the bike will stop better, it may even slide to a stop.

So how do you keep tension on the chain ?( It will stretch and come off leaving you with no brakes)

They don't even try to come off if only small slack, and stretch is gradual. The back pedal force light, the brake powerful. I run redundant hand brake for long downhills. They can get hot. Crazy reliable.

@@rbbiefah There is no spring loaded deraileur arm. So, the chain is JUST long enuff to loosely fit. Not enuff slack to climb off gears, and nothing to push the chain off the gears.

No this is not safe. The chain is not tensioned enough and will become more loose over time as it wears. The untensioned chain will drop at some time, and without a chain there is no brake. Been there. But, nothing more fun than to ride my coaster brake cyclocross bike on the MTB trails.
