Singletree Sizes & Why | Building a Buggy Dash | Engels Coach Shop

The size of a singletree is not always determined by the size of the horse. Most carriages and buggies will have a dash mounted on the front of the body. I briefly cover the differences in singletrees between shafts and a pole, and go through the process of sizing and building a dash frame for this two seat buggy. Thanks for following along.

"Lots of little steps" Four simple words that together say so very much about the craftsmanship we are exposed to whenever we have the privilege of watching one of your videos. Each of those "little steps" is expected to provide progress towards the desired end result. If that does not happen, your skill, dedication to your craft and seemingly bottomless patience cause slight modifications to that step until the desired result is obtained, along with an assessment of how to better accomplish the task next time it is called for. Amazing work Dave, thanks once again for allowing us along on this wonderful journey.

You have a unique skillset that would make anyone green with envy. I think it would be easier to ask if there is anything that you can't do. I have been a fabricator/machinest/builder/master craftsman for 50 years and bow to you and your abilities. You have inspired and taught me methods to achieve results in ways that are becoming obsolete as time goes on. I thank you for sharing your methods of work with all of us. May God bless you and yours and keep all of you safe and healthy in these chaotic times.

Dave, your anvil has a beautiful, cheerful, musical ring...just as it should be
@leebarnes655
@leebarnes655 3 года назад
Quite common for that belief system to exist, until you hear a silenced anvil and it's signature clack instead. Big Bear Forge here on YT went to the trouble of showing how to remove the ringing in his and I certainly am a fan of that flat sound his makes now, until then I had no idea such a thing was even possible. He wouldn't have bothered except he knew a thing or two about just how do it and wanted to show that process to us.

@cadjs
@cadjs 3 года назад
What you are describing is the curiosity and ingenuity that has enabled humans to achieve the astounding feats of engineering that we see all over the world. The term "engineer" derives from a Latin word meaning "to devise or contrive" which also gives us the word "ingenious".
@jonwatson9765
@jonwatson9765 3 года назад
With all the modern tools and equipment there is still considerable skill needed but it begs the question as to the skills and methods used 100 years ago.
@cadjs
@cadjs 3 года назад
@@jonwatson9765 The skills and methods are fundamentally the same, the modern equipment just means less human effort is needed to implement them. In the past, labour was cheap and production was based mostly on need for a product and not driven by time. The Industrial Revolution produced the modern world where production is driven by demand for products and therefore time efficiencies are key. The demand for the products is created by marketing which only became possible with the rise of mass media. The need for speed in production has driven the reduction in quality of many products and the throw away society has been driven by the perceived constant need to upgrade to a newer product.

Today and any number of times before, I've thought 'why are you doing that in that way because...' only later to go 'ahhh, ok, that makes sense'. Today, fitting the dash with only two bolts at the top of the wooden box frame - bit flimsy. ...and then the strengthening plates appeared. As always Dave, Saturday mornings are an education. Thank you again for all your work and Mrs Dave for all the filming and editing.

Dave likely had a threaded Hex Rod Coupler around the shop about the right size and depending on its size most Hardware Stores carrying them for a few dollars in the fastener/bolt etc section. Indeed since there threaded a bolt or rod can be put thru them to give it added strength when using his so it won't deform. The dash will help keep the dust/debris down as it always did and helps the reins stay clear of its power source since its natural for a horse to respond to a touch on its flanks as a danger. Indeed this is why jockeys often tap them with a crop there to keep them at speed though many rarely whip the animal since its training usually only needs contact not being beaten to get the response desired. Often the cracked of a whip was for its sound and only a bad driver would ever let it contact the horse and many took a hard stance with those that did..

One of the challenges watching your RU-vid videos is that I often have no idea what something is that you’re making. What is a “dash?” At the end I realized that it’s some kind of metal frame in front of the wagon. What does it do? It took me a really long time to figure out what a “reach” is. Double trees weren’t hard to figure out, but the pivot point was quite mystery for a long time in your videos. Love your channel, love your videos, but sometimes the mysteries go a bit further than just to pique my curiosity and become frustrating.
