Nothing like the feeling of sinking in a boat offshore but at least I know my Deep Drop Chicken Rigs work! Support the channel and get some:
southfloridafi...
In this fishing catch and cook episode on the South Florida Fishing Channel we go deep dropping at the islamorada humps and catch some great fish, but the weather quickly shifts and we decide to head back to land.
The wind and waves pick up, but nothing I haven't been in before. We hit a wave and hear the transom crack. The fiberglass at the top bolts of the engine is almost completely ripped off and the bottom bolts are cracked through and water starts to pour into the bilge.
At this point we are officially sinking 10 miles offshore with land not in sight. The only thing I see is Molasses reef tower, tiny off in the distance. On top of that boat sinking issue, the sun is almost down and it's going to be dark. Not a good time to sink...
This is a scary fishing catch n cook. But at least it's a fishing catch and cook. If the boat would have sank there would be no catch and cook.

If you were in this same situation where you feel your boat is sinking offshore and there is no one around what would you do?
Huge thanks to the coast guard for getting to my position so fast. It felt so much better knowing coast guard was in the sky looking for our boat if we would have sank offshore.
Now I need to find someone to fix my transom and hopefully I will never have boat sinking in my youtube video title again. It is scary when you realize your boat is taking on water and sinking, but it important to stay focused and do what you have to so you can live to fish another day.
Hope you enjoyed this offshore fishing catch and cook video. I will try my best to figure out more catch n cook videos for ya'll and i'll see you on the next fishing catch n cook episode!
PS: I promise there will be no more boat sinking...

This sure has been a rough year for me! Not sure when my boat will be functional again, but I'm digging deep into my creative brain to put out some super fun videos for ya'll including catching sharks from a paddleboard, blowing stuff up with the airgun and building some cool things. Thanks everyone for being part of the channel and if you know a mobile fiberglass guy down here shoot me an email! heiko@southfloridafishingchannel.com

It is a good idea to get a epirb, though expensive they save lives and so if you dont have one get some. Might need to reinforce the hull once repaired inside the bilge with some steel beams or something.

Glad you made it back safe guys! Guessing by the color around the cracks inside the bilge your transom is wood core. It got wet, rotted and delaminated. Good luck with the rebuild! Coosa core and a bracket will last a long time if done correctly.

Fun times. I do fiberglass work for myself and friends but I'm on the wrong side of the country to help. Looks like it's a wood core transom? I'm guessing the wood was wet and rotten by the way the upper bolts pulled through. I've switched over to Seacast pour transom so much better than wood and worth the extra money to know you will never have a problem. Closing the transom off and going with a bracket would be ideal and give you more deck space. Whoever you have fix it make sure they use quality materials like vinylester resin or epoxy with the correct fiberglass like 1708, I prefer Vynilester resin for the cost and ease of use. If you don't go with a pour transom use Coosa board or a similar material. do it once do it right and never worry about it.

Glad you made it back safe, definitely a scary moment! Ill give you my advice after working over 10 years in the marine industry, the entire transom needs to be cut out and rebuilt from the stringers up. A closed in transom with a brackett is your best amd safest bet. Trust me you"ll wonder why you never did it any sooner! Tight lines

I had something similar happen Thursday but I was 60 miles offshore and we got in some rough seas and it blew a threw hull in the bow on the boat and my main bilge failed luckily I had a second bilge and I cut the line for one of my wash down pumps to pump water and could limp in took at 30 minutes for the coast guard to come out and meet us and followed up back in coast guard did a awesome job

Tops are 'never' permanently mounted. It has to be able to come off. I agree with having someone closing in the transom...be sure they add big knees from the stringers. Transom thickness needs to be at least 2". Add a bracket & you'll have alot more interior space. You'll feel like you have a 25'er instead of a 23.

Personally when we install a motor on a fiberglass boat we use custom aluminum washers on the inside much bigger than what you have. I'm wondering if they over torqued the bolts when hanging the new motor. The backing plate looks kinda small for a 250. As far as the oysters, wear a leather glove to shuck, or warm them up on a grill or in a pan of salt until they pop open. I usually toss them on the grill over medium heat and allow them to cook in their own juice, when they pop or start leaking I open them, add a dot of cocktail sauce and enjoy.

Wow, just glad you are OK,,, Looks like you came out about as well as you could have. You have the boat and the motor.. Can you give us guys and idea of what calling the Coast Guard and the Rescue boat costs... I'm sure you have no idea what the repairs will cost. I'm just curious what the cost of having Coast Guard Planes, and boats costs you or how that's paid for... Again just glad you guys are OK. Real good thinking on roping the motor into a more stable situation. I think that's why I've never owned a boat like that... I'd not be any good in an emergency situation like that. I do remember watching my Fatherinlaw totally remake his transom in a small wooden boat so he could load a ginormas outboard on it... but he was on freshwater, calm lake in Kentucky...

Glad you guys made it back. I had a similar experience but mine was just straight up my error. I hit the 17 mile mark in our old 1978 Bonito bow rider. Myself, two buddies, so accustomed to it that never in a million years did it dawn on any of us how dangerous things can get and how quickly. well, this particular 15 mile trip ended with a swamp motor, no boat, and my friends and I holding on to one another. We managed to get life jackets on, but one friends was about 5 times too small. No idea what the hell we would do, My mother had already called the Coast guard when a squall line had come thru which was why we were headed in. We lost our radio on the squall snd she freaked because she couldn't get us. So we floated from 7pm until about daybreak the next morning. It was far and above the scariest thing Ive ever been through. I am guilty as hell to this day for putting my friends in such dangerous situation. I own a Mako 171 with a Merc 90 behind it, today. I don't much leave the harbor these days. It changes a man I suppose, or at least it changed this one. Best of luck and be safe out there. Chas.

@SouthFloridaFishingChannel Heico unfortunately a "mobile" fiberglass guy isn't going to fix your broken transom. You have an old boat with old wood in it that's probably more than 20 years old, that wood is probably on its way out as its probably rotting away. Those guys at Sea power marine in Tamiami really screwed you over man, and I'm sorry to say that. They may have already known about your rotting transom or how weak it was and proceeded to mount that engine on it just to get that sale $$. Also the way they bolted those lower bolts through your transom is a joke and was bound to fail, especially on an old wooden transom like that, wood does not have the compressive strength modern day composites do, so when they mounted those lower bolts they should have at the very least used a cross brace like they did on the top two bolts. Dinky aluminum fiberglass washers like those where over time just digging into your transom with pressure caused by the engine. Since you are considering a transom bracket you will most definitely need to get that transom replaced, no way in hell that transom of yours is holding up a bracket. Whatever transom you do decide to put back in i would highly recommend Composite materials like Coosa board or ARJAY pour in transoms. I cant recommend you any fiberglass shops here in Miami but taking your boat up to Ft Lauderdale would be a good option, lots of good fiberglass shops up there, might even consider replacing all that wood in the boat!

Aluminum and stainless will work with fiberglass. I make reinforcements for my uncles boat and his friends deep sea. You drill the stainless and or aluminum and lace the fiber in and out leaving tails. Then build the form around it. Stress point only moves when you don't brace bottom to top. You can build a square tube frame inside and then drill to the glass. Much more process but it works very well. You can do with wood frame then glass it over and lay fiber but has to be done right because bubbling in between will create a flex point that eventually will crack and fail. Did a lot of fiberglass repair and custom work for supporting lots of weight. Its all in the approach and how much you have to work with.
@family_roomroku9635

Fiberglass is plenty strong. It just depends on how thick it is, what kind of core structure, the condition of the core, and the design. Edit: my current boat project is a full hull extension on a 1965 Bertram 25. It will end up looking like a bracket, but be for width, full flotation. The transom part will have a total of 16 layers of 17 oz. biaxial epoxy fiberglass and 2.25" thick Coosa board.

But how do you place a 4 stroke 250 that weights much more than the transom was originally intended for. Remember that your boat is an older boat that has a transom intended for 2 stroke. Your transom may be rated for 250 but its not rated for that weight nor that amount of torque that engine has. Also your transom is very open in the back. While your very lucky, this will be a lesson learned. Please be safe and next time do more homework when repowering. Best thing you can do is convert it to a euro transom. Or close the transom. Use straight Coosa foam with many sheets of glass. Put a heavy duty bracket and have it reinforced. And while its opened in the back, check tge transom as well. Might of happened after installation. They could of had the boat stored outside with no cover, that would do it. But the mounting is horrible. There’s not much support to spread the weight out. My father would always using large Aluminum plates to distribute the pressure and weight on the transom. This has like 2 square inch pieces if even in the bottom mounts.

Dude you def need a new transom, motors got to come off, transom needs to be completely replaced, big job for your backyard. Put the boat back in the water (you'll be fine) Tow it to a reputable shop and have it fixed right. Good idea to put a bracket on. Your prob looking at 3-5k. Also have the stringers checked before you do anything. Good luck !!

Those two small backer plates are wrong for that motor. You need a stainless plate that goes between both mount posts. This would be on the inside of your bilge ( a stainless plate about 2-21/2 feet long and 1-11/2 foot wide.I think the motor was installed wrong and I would take it back to the people to get it fixed. If you need more call 850-435-9008.

Get a hoist, remove the engine, do a temp patch on the transom, put an electric or small tiller engine on your boat and put it back in the water to get it to a repair shop.

Yes, seal the cracks and slowly idle to a neighborhood ramp. Have it hauled to one of many boat repair companies that will get rid of that open transom. And put on your damn PFDs next time this happens. It was really stressful watching those waves build up behind you and water coming in. Glad you, the boat and catch all survived.

Your transom needs to be replaced....guys that changed your motor should have seen if the core was water logged or not. Anyhow the plywood needs to be removes and then you can replace it with a non wood core that will never take on water from any screw holes or drain holes and will last forever. That is the proper fix here. Seeing as you spent some food coin on your rebuild i would definitely get the transom core replaced to non wood.

Whomever mounted your 'Rude needs to be brought up on attempted murder. Those square backing washers were too small and the wrong shape to support the engine's weight and torque. It's not the boat's fault. Check the boat's documentation and write them. They'll be P.O.-d at that mounting job.

I remember fishing out of Point Pleasant, NJ one year 28 miles out to the “Monster Ledge” for shark fishing on a 26’ Robalo! What we didn’t know while chumming, the bilge pump stopped working! I was in the cabin taking a nap and woke up stepping in water! I was like….. WTF! I went out on deck and told my buddy who’s the captains said there’s water inside the boat! I look at the transom and the water was flush to the deck and said….. “We’re taking on water!” I looked down in the water and a shark possibly a Great White or a huge Mako swim by and said…. “This is it! We’re going down!” Lucky the engines started and we were able to get in riding heavy and not able to plane out! That was a moment I’ll NEVER FORGET! You’re talking about scared!

wow. I'm so sorry. It looks like the material under the fiberglass in the transom has rotted. Is it wood? If so, your stringers go where the transom goes. You need to get the engine off of there either way. If you're going to fix it, you want to have a marine engineer look at your structure and figure out how much really needs to be replaced because that rot can permeate a hull. You don't want to film this show a second time. Good news is that actual structural fiberglass work is not difficult and you can have a pro finish it once you get the structural stuff finished. Get a plan from the marine engineer. Or you can go find a new (used) hull and put that sweet 250 and the tower on the next boat. I would pick a composite-only boat, no wood to rot. Really impressed with your ability to focus on cooking and making jokes after such an event. I'm looking forward to see what you actually decide.

Two things that come to mind that could have caused this to happen. # 1 The transom may have been compromised during transport , did you cross any rough railroad tracks when you moved it from the shop back to the water ? # 2 Improper throttle management. Throttling up just when half or more of the boat exists a wave , it's like trying to make a boat do a wheelie. jus my 2c

Take the engine, electronics, tower, and anything else you can salvage off and just buy a used hull. Forget repairing that. You will always be wondering if it's going to hold up.

That's what I was thinking... and I do fiberglass for a living. Can it be repaired, yes of course, but its not worth it Better to take the money and upgrade to a better hull.

Heiko there is a youtube Alfred montenar or something like that but he just did a video of restoring a transom out of Miami and the guy did a awesome job did away with having wood went all composite but check out this video you will see what it takes to rebuild one. But you will need to them boat to a shop. Do not let somebody talk you into getting a bracket for the motor they are vary problematic. Think of the law of physics in leverage
