Sinking a Battleship and Dodging Kamikaze Attack in WW2 | Leyte Gulf

During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, a fleet of Japanese battleships attempted to run the 47-mile Surigao Strait in an effort to spoil the Allied landing at Leyte Gulf, but United States 7th Fleet Support force and the USS Melvin with Phil Hollywood onboard were standing in their way. This was the last ship-to-ship battle in the history of war, and the largest.

@@nutmaster7242 Canada did much more. Britain left almost their entire logistics system on the beaches of Dunkirk. About 80% of all vehicles in their entire military. The Canadian auto industry stepped up and replaced them in short order, probably saving Britain from losing the war. I would say that's a pretty good contribution.

I'd say that, say 10-15 years ago, very few people in Britain had heard of these extraordinary exploits. That is changing. "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" is one of the great books about naval warfare, and should be read by everyone. The exploits of Taffy 3's escorts off Samar is simply mind-boggling, helped by a following wind of luck. It out-Nelsons Nelson by a fair way. 'Heroes" is a much overused term these days, but those guys genuinely were.

The Battle of Surigao Strait to which Mr. Hollywood refers was the last battleship to battleship engagement in history. As the Japanese came through the strait Admiral Jesse Oldendorf attacked first with PT boats, then destroyers and finally performed the classic “Crossing the T” with his six old battleships, 5 of which were sunk or heavily damaged at the attack on Pearl Harbor. The entire Battle of Leyte Gulf was the biggest naval battle of WW2. I’m sure it is studied in every naval institute in the world. A story of audacity, great heroism and courage on both sides.

I wish I had known about this video while this brave patriot was alive. I would have liked to have spoken with him in more detail of this famous action because I feel a sort of connection with his story. You see, my late father who served in the Air Force during the Korean war, was good friends with another U.S.S. Melvin crewman from New Jersey. We all lived in the same town. My father told me his friend was the torpedoman who launched the fatal "fish" that sank the Fuso. This man passed away many years ago and I only vaguely remember meeting him when I was around 4 years old (1965), but never again had the opportunity to do so later. My father spoke very highly of his friend and that was proven to be true since I had a chance to know this man's son just before I got married in 1987. The son became a police officer. I got to meet him by chance because my wife and I both worked at the same place as his wife and they both came to our wedding. When my father saw his friend's son again it was a great reunion and I got to hear his father's part in that battle myself. I thought this anecdote would be of interest.

My Dad was at Wheeler Field on December 7, 1941. He never talked about the war. We only found out he got a Bronze Star and Purple Heart there after he passed away. He was also on a troopship that was torpedoed by a German U-Boat as they crossed through the Panama Canal into the Caribbean. He spent a week in a lifeboat with five guys before being rescued. My Dad was definitely part of the Greatest Generation. My Mother was in the British Navy at the time. She survived many German bombing raids in London. I wound up going through the Tet Offensive in Vietnam in 1968. Somehow we all survived.

It was not really a WW2 era battleship but it was built for WW1 (it was quite old). That, added with the fact it was already hurt by a bomb from a Hellcat a day before plus the relatively incompetent damage control methods of the Japanese crews, probably all contributed to why it was sunk (though getting broken in two is likely not a sign of inept damage control). If it was a German Bismarck class battleship or if an American battleship experienced similar things, they would likely have survived.
