MS Estonia was a cruiseferry built in 1980 at the West German shipyard Meyer Werft in Papenburg. In 1993, she was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn-Stockholm route. The ship's sinking on 28 September 1994, in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, was one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century, claiming 852 lives.
The official report concluded that the bow door had separated from the vessel, pulling the ramp ajar. The ship was already listing because of poor cargo distribution, and the list increased rapidly, flooding the decks and the cabins. Shortly, power failed altogether, inhibiting search and rescue, and a full-scale emergency was not declared for 90 minutes. Of the 989 on board, 138 were rescued. The report criticised the passive attitude of the crew, failing to notice that water was entering the vehicle deck, delaying the alarm, and providing minimal guidance from the bridge.

I remember the morning when it came on the news. Yes, it happened very fast - in the space of half an hour or so, at midnight and in near storm conditions. Some of those who survived had to kick at and step on other people to fight their way out of the doomed ship and up to the open deck, climbing up steep stairways that were already listing 40 degrees and near-constantly moving. Very unsettling and controversial with many people to this day.

With such a lightning-fast increase in sideways roll, it is simply physically impossible to get out of the cabins, much less climb up from the lower decks! On ferries, people usually relax by drinking alcohol - this also negatively affects their reaction in emergency situations. The furniture and decorative elements were not attached to the floor, and during the roll of the ferry these things became a real murder weapon. Immediately after the crash, experts suggested that air pockets could have formed in some parts of the sunken ferry - and that there could be enough air in them for several days. For some reason, the life jackets were tied together in piles of 4 pieces. Many of those who managed to jump into the sea were unable to put on their vests correctly and people simply slipped out of them due to strong waves
@alexvalin9085
@alexvalin9085 Год назад
This is the most horrifying sinking to me. VERY little time to react, even if you were strong/fast/sober/young there was still no guarantee that you would make it out. I imagine the central stairwell like one of those surrealist paintings except people viciously attacking each other to attempt to climb out of it.

There is currently a press briefing going on relating to the latest investigation of the Estonias wreck. The conclusion of the investigation was that the Estonia was not seaworthy to operate the route between Tallinn and Stockholm.
@mikeprevost8650

This was shortly after Estonia regained its independence, after the breakup of the USSR. Decades of lax attitudes fostered by Soviet rule and corruption likely were a factor. Estonia has come a long way since, and now its ferries operate under very stringent safety regulations.
@sullybiker6520
@sullybiker6520 11 месяцев назад
@@mikeprevost8650 You don't see this bow visor design on many blue water ferries now. Most commonly clamshell. A family friend was a WW2 veteran who took several LSTs across the Atlantic. He had a strong dislike of any aperture at the bow of a ship. Said on many crossings the LST bow doors had to be welded closed in heavy weather. The sea doesn't care.
@ChrisCooper312
@ChrisCooper312 8 месяцев назад
Another two changes on modern ro-ro ferries that came as a result of both this and Herald of Free Enterprise, are that the bow doors are higher above the water, meaning that even if they are compromised, water is less likely to get in, and that the car decks are divided into watertight compartments.

If I had been on that ship, the second I sensed something was wrong I would have used my ring hand to punch through my cabin window so I could jump into the sea, leaving my wife and children behind. The sad truth is that the ship wasn't designed for sailing on the wide open sea - it had been built in 1980 (as "Viking Sally") for the route between Stockholm and Finland, a route that's protected by archipelagos nearly all the way, with no wide expanses of fully open water, so you don't get the same kind of heavy waves up there - and also, the ship was badly constructed (much like Herald of Free Enterprise and Scandinavian Star) and not in a great condition by 1994, for lack of upkeep. She plainly wasn't seaworthy for a ride across the open Baltic Sea in rough weather, but with bribes and some goodwill. you can get past such considerations...
