SINKING SUPPORT VESSEL IN TOW CAUGHT YACHT CREW BY SURPRISE
The 191-foot charter luxury yacht UNBRIDLED entered New Bedford Harbor with its sinking tender boat in tow, Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 1:15PM.
According to Captain Clint Allen, of TowBoat US New Bedford Marine Rescue, the $25-million yacht's captain and crew were unaware that the tender under tow was taking on water at the stern until just outside New Bedford Harbor.
Towboat US boats arrived quickly at the scene and placed emergency pumps on board. The 41-foot boat was going awash at the stern with the weight of 4-huge outboard motors, pulling it under. Captain Shane McNamara of TBUS Boat 4 and Captain Mike Wheaton of TBUS Boat 2 assisted the stricken vessel.
The yacht, built in 2009, had a scheduled docking at Fairhaven Shipyard and Marina.
It charters out currently at $295,000.00 per week. Source: • $295,000/wk to CHARTER...
The tender boat was taken out of the water and placed on a travel lift for assessment. Captain Allen said at least two motors were completely submerged. Apparently a boarding door-panel aft on the starboard side was left ajar and waves poured in.
