@@pressureworks Siouxsie and the Banshees's first John Peel Session dated from November 1977 - that day, they premiered their song "Metal Postcard" with machine-like drums, bass as the leading instrument and serrated distorted guitar, which directly influenced a then unknown banal punk band of Manchester called Warsaw - who then retransformed themselves a few months later as Joy Division.. The Banshees's music on this 1977 Peel session deeply transformed the style of Joy Division future drummer Stephen Morris. He recognized it in his recent autobiography; Peter Hook also said for Q magazine that the Banshees were "one of our big influences".
SHIT!!! I was there that night...........first feckin' time I've seen this in 30+ years.......I need to sit down and tke it all in :-) ps- was MUCH louder than this clip denotes!
That's freckin awesome! I can't imagine seeing something once then reliving it 30 years later! Imagine all the synapses from that deeply buried memory firing for the first time in 30 years. Gotta be crazy!
"Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)" - Lyrics SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES - Album "THE SCREAM" (1978) SONGWRITERS : MORRIS, MCKAY, SUSAN BALLION (Siouxsie Sioux), STEVEN SEVERIN "Reunion begins with a glass of mercury whilst television flickers for (with) another news bulletin flints light up the eyes of the seated family [Chorus:] "Metal is tough, metal will sheen Metal won't rust when oiled and cleaned Metal is tough, metal will sheen Metal will rule in my masterscheme" With a clockwork jerk pluck cogs from fob watches for dinner on Friday then recoiling say excuse me "Must go recycle my precious machinery" [Chorus] It's ruling our lives there is no hope thought I'd drop a line the weather here is fine but day and night it blares commanding through loudspeakers:- [Chorus] (Metal is tough, metal is clean)".
This being shown in manchester (with Siouxsies interest in Nazi regalia) Promted Mark e Smith to write 'Dresden Dolls' (are back in style). That used a similar arrangement. Check it out on RU-vid.. It was released as an extra on the deluxe edition of 'The Fall- live at the witch trials '
We were all too cool for (art) school back then - crowds didn't go crazy in general - not that often anyway. And no 'rock horns and air-punching - thank god!!!
Um......wow, people, BOTH woman are VERY TALENTED.........Patti Smith was a regular at the CBGB, hmmm, think about that will ya. LOVE SIOUXSIE LOVE PATTI!
OMG... I was just thinking the same thing. Siouxsie bathes!! I remember Patti Smith at Max's on those hot summer nights ... oh dear god help you if you got a whiff!
@lewisner i dont now if you have heard both songs, but to me, the start of 'here comes the day' off mantaray sounds like the beat from marilyn manson's 'i dont like the drugs but the drugs like me' from mechanical animals....
You can see early qualities that will make her a star. The songs were very original. Great tribal tom tom approach that is hard to keep up consistently. I feel that the approach has the tendency to slow and speed as the game goes on.
Notice the Hippieish guy /long thinning blonde hair at front of stage? ...he appears at the same venue , in the same spot!! when the Clash were recorded playing for 'So it goes' ( performing Janie Jones,Capital radio etc). ..I guess this was on the same night?? Anyone Actually confirm this..??
Yes it was the same night. Siouxie wasn't scheduled to play it was a gig arranged for Granada to film a documentary called so it goes. They wanted Granada (Tony Wilson) to film the Clash. I think Subway Sect were the support gig and the Banshees were surprise guests it should have been Richard Hell and the voidoids I think. It was a long time ago but I will always remeber how fantastic it was. The Elizabethan had a proper sprung dancefloor this was still the days when punks pogoed. once everyone started pogoing and bouncing the whole place seemed to be on the move
Need to check out whether the Clash footage is on here. Joe Strummer was pished that night....best band were the warm-up act, though. The Rackaras (or something like that). Absolutely deafening, they were. 5 piece band. LOL - by the time Siouxsie came on, the bar had run dry!! Christ, was it 35 years ago??
An early song in the set and they were an unsigned support band at the time. look up the Clash from later the same night the Audience are a bit more energetic by then
early in the set of an unsigned (as yet) support act, they weren't even supposed to be on the bill, Richard Hell was the advertised support act. Next gig you go to see how many people are dancing at the start of the support bands set
No dissing Patti Smith and how the hell do you know that she doesn't bathe Jonnobaas huh? Do you know her personally eh? No, I didn't think so, so shut your trap!
Shit, I thought that guy was skinny, playing the drums...........I m like cool siouxsie plays the drum and sing ...........................................shit
He did, he played with "The Slits" the banshees had a different drummer and a different guitar player that wrote Hong Kong Garden, I forgot there names now but, They first two guys were studio musicians.
@Ihatevbshit Nope, there's nothing wrong with you. Though I personally don't have much against the Spice Girls, I do feel frustrated whenever I hear Taylor Swift.....>_
