To me, Veron's signing was the first time that I realized an amazing player joining an amazing team won't always work. At the end of the day, it was hard to break the Scholes/Keane partnership, but what a baller Veron was ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽
I really like Bebe's story, not because he was a "nobody" when United signed him but because he was in one of the worst possible situations a child can find themselves in. To make it from an orphanage to being a regular at a professional football club is insane and I hope the kids in these institutions look up to him.
Just to add a bit to Veron's quality: When older he went back to his childhood club Estudiantes in Argentina but he was still so good and relevant he helped them win a Copa Libertadores and even had a great match in the Club World Cup against peak Barcelona in 2009 when he was 34. He then served as president of the club for 6 years I think, including the recent pandemic. Estudiantes has had success in the past but is historically a mid table club, so Veron making then win a Libertadores is like Beckham going to a club like Everton at 32 and making them reach a Champions League Final
@@larrystreak1044 still, going to your childhood club at an older age and making it win an international competition that allows it to play later in a final against the best Barcelona team of probably all time is an achievement in any continent in my books and deserves respect
Seeing some of these transfer fees just goes to show how much inflation has changed football. Nowadays, a lot of fairly average players cost nearly or over £50m.
What bugs me about CONCACAF is that their patches on the jerseys for WCQ and Gold Cup are always falling of or hanging on threads. I know that’s petty but still, only in CONCACAF
I was at bebe debut (if I remember correctly) against wolves we won 2/1 Park last double, last minute winner, Hargreaves came back from injury then got injured again, anyway bebe came on, over hit every single cross and pass, then got taken off around 30 minutes after.
Yep. I am a Wolves fan. 2010. We had equalised with Ebanks Blake. Park scored in questionable 93rd min. More Fergie time. And I remember United fans had turned on Fergie. It's what makes me laugh. My one memory of the great manager and only experience is seeing United fans chanting "you arent the real man united" or something. Bebe wasn't great... He was easily stopped. I mean Stearman block his shots and passes and grew into the game and ended up scoring.... So... In fact Bebe was a sub that ended up being subbed, making it onto that exclusive list... SOOO.... Scholes and Macheda were brought on. I do remember Old Trafford was filled. Which is better now than most FA cup games. LOL. But yeah... So
@@razerow3391 @RazerOW we never turned on fergie, not a chant that's ever been created or used either. Old Trafford is always full and the atmosphere has massively improved.
It was far from his debut. He had already played 2 league cup matches against Scunthorpe and Wolves (where he scored), a champions league match against Bursaspor (where he scored) and a league match against Sunderland by the time of the Wolves league game. And he was actually on the pitch for over 60mins, he obviously wasn't supposed to come on so early and wasn't really fit enough to do more than 60mins so while a lot was made of it I suspect it was less to do with his performance and more to do with by that point he was running out of steam. Also personally I don't think he was as bad as people like trying to make out, he was raw having had very little formal training plus he was playing with players that he largely couldn't communicate with and it saw him have issues but its almost like every mistake he made has been edited in peoples minds as happing in a single game and the flashes of the raw talent he had such as the goals ignored
Problem with advanced flair players like Veron and countryman Juan Roman Riquelme is that they are amazing with the ball at their feet. When the rest of the team is good enough to bypass the player by making chances of their own, they become essentially ineffective. This is usually something the deep lying playmaker types like Xavi and Pirlo do better at, because they have far more room and time to pick a pass.
Still hoping for a "What on Earth is Going on at Sunderland? Sunderland til I die showed our relegation to league one and failed attempt to get promoted back to the Championship, but a detailed look at the Premier League years before our relegation would be great, also looking at how things went after STID. The amount of bad luck and awful decisions and from board level down to the pitch is staggering. In the Ellis Short era, and then the Stewart Donald era. -England losing against Iceland essentially resulting in us losing Allardyce, a great manager for us at the time, only for him to be sacked by England after 1 game. -At one point having the 6th highest wage bill in the Premier League with nothing really to show for it. -The purchase of Ricky Alvarez, not playing him, trying to back out of signing him, losing a lawsuit to Inter Milan and still suffering financial implications to this day. -Signing the appalling Jack Rodwell and being financially crippled for years again -Signing a completely past it Emmanuel Eboue who was then released 3 weeks later as he was banned from football for unpaid agent debts -Playing Adam Johnson when the execs knew he was under investigation for sexual activity with a child. -Well known drinking culture among players, general poor professionalism. -Darron Gibson getting arrested for drink driving after a car crash. Gibson also filmed on social media off his tits bad mouthing the team and manager whilst still a player. -Letting our top scorer leave in January in our Championship relegation season -Selling our top scorer in January in our first League 1 promotion push -Replacing him with Will Grigg for 3 million quid on a league 1 budget because our owner at the time wanted to be a big shot. Grigg was a failure since and never even wanted to come. -Losing twice at Wembley in League 1 including in the playoff final in the 95th minute. -Missing out on the playoffs after the season was cancelled due to COVID -Losing again in the playoffs last season -Losing last season's top scorer with 30 goals (Wyke) and our Captain (Power) to Wigan for free in the summer. We've made a solid start to this season and made some decent signings under our new owner, but the whole story of the last 10 years is an absolute car crash worth a deep dive.
Not even going to be a rival fan here. As a football fan Sunderland should be a premier league side. A good size ground! And decent fans! You don’t deserve the downfall sunderland have had.
Hey Alfie! Paranaense supporter here. Our club went through a redesign in late 2018, and since the we have a new emblem, different from the one you used in the thumbnail. Also, it is a fairly big joke among our supporters the joint announcement of Kleberson and CR7!
Could you make an outside case for Jones? He can't be blamed for his injuries but the fact the club have had him contracted for almost if not a decade now the loss in wages to performance must be horrific
Christ, I'm going to comment on every player. I must be the only United fan to get "Tosic 14" on a shirt... I've still got it but will never wear it in public 😂
Phil Jones should be seriously considered for this list. I know he's helped them win a couple trophies but he cost £17mil back when that was a hell of a lot and you then have to consider how they've basically been paying him to not play for like 5 years now. He signed for United the same week Liverpool signed Henderso and Henderson has played 177 games more in that time. And bare in mind Henderson has had some real injury problems himself
I also believe Phil has won more trophies in that period, let's not forget what he's done in the past as he started well and had some good moments, done more than someone say baily has for us (i know fergie didn't sign him) also Jones cost 16 million not 30.
@@jhaych correction, his TEAM won more trophies in that time. Jones did fuck all but stand on the shoulders of much better players. And I stand corrected on the price
@@CaptDeadpool32 well he will retire with him them medals and go down in history with them wins. He deserved the first league title and I genuinely can't remember the rest like if he did or didn't, I believe he contributed to fa Cup and league Cup possibly.
@@jhaych I've actually just looked it up and he hasn't won more than Hendo. He's won 1 league title, 1 fa cup, 1 europa league and 2 community shields. Compared to Hendo, 1 league title, 1 champions league, 1 league Cup, 1 super cup and 1 club world cup. They've won 5 trophies each but Henderson won bigger trophies and played a larger role
A mention for Dong Fangzhou (who was ineligible to play for MUFC for three years because of work permit issues), who made one league appearance, and was basically a desperate attempt to increase the club's appeal in China. This excellent (as usual) cast has a theme of good players who just couldn't adapt to the PL, plus Ferguson's bias towards players who had one or two excellent performances against United
Veron was a success look at his performances in Europe, he ran games. Utd gave Juventus a footballing lesson at the Stadio Deli Alpi on 2003 with Veron running the show
@@TiNRiB Veron was underrated at United though. The reality is was most Veron performances that season were of a high level - he just got unlucky with injury. Without him United would not have won the league that year. His performances vs Chelsea and Arsenal that year were crucial to United winning the league.
@@tris421 again i say... Did you guys listen to what he said in the video? Worst SIGNINGS not players. No ones doubts Veron was an awesome player, but he was a bad signing for United.
Bebe's story is great, he went from being abandoned by his parents as a child to being at a profession and a football club that put an arm around his shoulder.
Yeah!! We love Bebe at Vallecas. Maybe not United level but a great player for our club for many years. And for now you are right we are above Barcelona on the table.
Veron had some really good games for us, occasionaly you'd see what he was possible of, but nobody takes Scholes's spot in the united team of the 2000's.
The tragic death of that former Manchester United player really made me to be in tears even though,he was not the best signing for them but a nice footballer nonetheless, good friends!!!:'(
@@toph8298 I remember him scoring an absolute worldie for my beloved Bristol City. We were amazed when Utd came in for him, his reputation wasn't a secret.
I have to disagree with you on your assesment of Veron. IMO his time at United is misunderstood by people who did not watch those seasons closely. His first season was a mixed bag - Our biggest issue that year, however, was selling Stam so Verons form coincided with the team just not being solid enough. His second season however, not only in the UCL in which he was (along with RVN) genuinely United's best player, he really picked up form in the Prem. He ran the show vs Arsenal and Chelsea and was really picking up to the pace of the Prem around xmas that year. If I remember correctly he got injured vs Leeds and although Ferguson put him back in the team over Beckham vs Real Madrid in the QTR final - he never regained his fitness nor his place in the team. In any case, if you watch the games he played I really don't see how he can be considered bad. Did he live up to his massive expectation? No, maybe not. But I still would not consider him a terrible signing and without his contribution to United in the 03 season I really think they would not have won the title. Injury and circumstance shortened his career at United. I think it was a mistake selling him to Chelsea.
I don't think it's accurate to say Utd we're not big spenders prior to 2000. Their 1990 FA Cup winning squad was the most expensively assembled squad in history at the time. They regularly broke transfer records with likes of Hughes and Ince and Keane and Cole etc. Money wasn't the problem for Utd prior to '93.
Taibi was a bit of a car crash at United but was a good gloveman, ask anyone who was into Italian football back in the day. He genuinely was one of the best 3-4 Italian keepers over several seasons, hence United (like AC Milan before) paying serious money for him in the first place. Can't help but wonder if he'd been given a few months to acclimatise and learn fluent English, could it have ended differently.
I remember Sjemba Djemba and Liam Miller from the danish league they were both relatively sucessfull allthough Miller was only on loan (alonside Scott Sellars from Bolton) with AGF in Aarhus RIP Liam Miller
Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 210) I will not give up until the video is made or Alfie himself tells me to stop. Everyone else telling me that will be ignored. If you don't believe my number, just go back to the previous videos. I'm at the bottom most of the time, but I'm there.
In defence of Kleberson for the discussion at least. £6.5mil (£10.5 in todays money) for a World Cup winner - who started in the final - isn't too bad. Plus they got near 50% of their fee back after 2 years so all in all not too bad a punt for one of the richest clubs in the world.
Sorry Alfie..your introduction was WRONG. Sir Alex Ferguson is THE GREATEST manager of all time. He even topped you managers all time list video from last yr or something. Sorry for being prickly abt this detail...but I am a UTD fan. Also you left out Phil Jones...
Saying the greatest is a matter of opinion. Bob Paisley won 3 European cups in a much shorter period of time. Had he managed q club for 27 years he could be considered the greatest.
Simple. Putting incompetent and people who know nothing about football in positions to make critical decisions. People who make crucial decisions. It's simple as that
Veron was class. Ferguson just played him in the wrong position, on the left, when he had no pace. He was a footballer, not an athlete. Sadly, our current squad has far too many of the later.
Most successful English team ever, Always in the top 3 richest football teams in the world! Supporter base worldwide. Associated with excellent football ethics. Don't forget he said arguably!
@@polaris7122 they are of course a huge club, but certainly not the biggest. They definitely are not bigger than clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in terms of achievements at least… I like United, but I commented because I keep hearing this over and over, that they are arguably the biggest club in the world.
Football business is crazy because owners don't make money. Alan Sugar repeatedly said he wasted his time and energy be the owner of Tottenham for ten years, which means Mike Ashely is a very strong man owns Newcastle United for about 15 years.
About Kleberson.!!! 32 caps and a word cup for Brazil but he says " it's not a fair fight "competing for a place at Utd. Not saying he's better or good as Scholes ect but surely he could fight for a squad role? ???
That's astonishing. A list of Fergie's worst signings without even a whiff of a mention of David May or Jim Leighton. I must have been correct in my guess at the time that he'd got them both in a defective lucky packet.
Verón wasn't "a worst buy". He was amazingly gifted player, maybe with Scholes the best in SAF's 'reign'. Maybe shoe-horning him into XI wasn't easily done. At least he got more minutes than Solksjær misuse of Donny.
It just goes to show no matter how good a player is,he might not be any good at a club whose just signed him, especially with foreign players they have to settle in learn the language and integrate into the team at the same time, for a lot of players it just doesn't work out for a multitude of reasons, every signing is a gamble many people in football have said that
Veron was 28.1million. He actually did very well for the first few months, people forget that, but sadly it didn't quite work. United weren't the biggest spenders either.
Hm, no Dion Dublin? And I am a fan of Dion's too, but he didn't fit at Man U (old-fashioned battering ram forwards haven't worked there since the time of Matt Busby!)
