Unveiled in July 2015, this portrait of the mathematician Sir Andrew Wiles by Rupert Alexander was commissioned for the Gallery’s permanent collection through the J.P. Morgan Fund for New Commissions.
Artist Rupert Alexander talks about the process of painting his portrait of Wiles from life under filtered natural light to cast a coloured hue on the sitter.
Sir Andrew Wiles' work caught the public imagination in 1993 when he announced a proof for 'Fermat's last theorem’, a celebrated problem that had baffled mathematicians for centuries. He is currently Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Oxford and has been awarded the Wolfskehl Prize, set up in 1905 for solving precisely this problem, and numerous international prizes including the Shaw Prize, the Royal Society's Royal Medal and a Fields Medal by the International Mathematical Union.
Created in 2004, the Fund for New Commissions marks a partnership between the Gallery and J.P. Morgan in commissioning new portraiture. The Fund was established with the belief that investment in new commissions provides a platform for the future development of new portraits as well as encouraging ongoing support for new and emerging artists.
