SIR Lindsay Hoyle has been elected the new House of Commons Speaker by MPs to replace John Bercow.
The favourite beat Chris Bryant by 112 votes in the fourth and final round.
In the final round of votes, Sir Lindsay, formerly a deputy to Mr Bercow, got 325 while fellow Labour MP Chris Bryant received 213.
Sir Lindsay will replace Mr Bercow, who left the role after a decade which has been viewed as a time of reform but also controversy.
Speakers must be politically impartial, meaning Sir Lindsay will be required to resign from the Labour Party in order to carry out his duties.
Speaking after the result, Sir Lindsay, 62, distanced himself from his showboat predecessor.
Sir Lindsay, who is widely popular and respected by colleagues, said: "I will be neutral. I will be transparent.
"This House will change but it will change for the better."
He also paid tribute to his daughter Natalie Lewis-Hoyle, 28, who died in 2017 and whom he said his family misses a great deal.
Sir Lindsay was reluctantly dragged to his chair as part of a tradition dating back to the days when speakers could be sentenced to death if they displeased the monarch.

@JasonTheGreat18
@JasonTheGreat18 4 года назад
TrXl he remains an MP but he is no longer a part of the Labour Party. As the speaker he has to be an independent MP. But it is the usual convention that all of the other parties do not field a candidate in the constituency. So perhaps they will have an election with only Sir Lindsay on the ballot? Seems like a huge waste of time and money. So my question was asking if they actually will hold an election in that constituency
@k2cr
@k2cr 4 года назад
@@JasonTheGreat18 Out of respect for the role of speaker, generally speaking the other major party withdraws from running for his constituency, some more minor parties don't though: but it's a tradition which is always followed by Labour and the Conservatives. Edit: So yes, they will. But it's not pointless because they can still vote otherwise.

We will look back, Bercow is a character, and in all likelehood brought a lot of people to watch the goings on in Parlaiment, people that would not otherwise have been interested. Found the 'No clapping' tradition for impartiality : ...."But the committee backed the applause ban in a 1998 report: "While we agree that spontaneous clapping at the end of a speech could in no way be interpreted as disturbance of the speaker, there is a danger that such a practice might be open to abuse and could lead in certain circumstances to orchestration of what would amount to standing ovations with the success or failure of a speech being judged not by its content but by the relative length of the ovation at the end. "This might not disrupt an individual speech, but would disrupt the tenor of the debate, as indeed would slow handclapping."

I have had some respect for Harriet Harman in the past for her various roles and actions. I think the moment she lost me with the speakership election was when she made it all about identity politics and how she should be elected because she is a woman. When will these people learn..........it's not about your identity, your gender, your skin colour or any other factor over which you had no choice at birth. It's about character, ability and record of action. As soon as she played the 'I am a woman so elect me card' I knew from the expressions on members' faces that she had lost the race. So so sad...........when will they learn. Equality means equality........not special privilege based on your identity

@SaigonBrit
@SaigonBrit 4 года назад
@@JasonTheGreat18 Absolutely. I think she simply doesn't get it. The era of identity politics is coming to a halting close. People are sick to death of it. Even Obama has recently condemned it and comedians are now openly ridiculing PC/identity politics/outrage culture for what it is. If only Harriet had stuck to merit..........'judge me on the content of my character'. As soon as she pulled the 'I'm a woman' nonsense she probably lost 200 votes in this secret ballot.

Best man for the job. I can’t vote for this Labour Government in the General Election even though I have always voted for them in the past. I will be voting for the Brexit Party in the General Election. However, Lyndsey Hoyle is the Chorley MP and the man I vote for in the local elections. He is fantastic, honest, helpful and loyal to the people no matter who they support. Congratulations to a proper champion of our country. Unfortunately this Labour Government is not fit for purpose.

With all due respect to the new speaker and all speakers in the world, I don’t think any parliament speaker on Planet Earth would EVER match Bercow in any way, shape or form. To me, Bercow was born to only do this job.

I reckon Sir Hoyle has one of the best demeanors/personalities of recent speakers… he’s always gracious but can crack the whip like Betty Boothroyd. 😉
