It's been a great privilege to witness the Manx Missile as a pro for the last time and break the record of the great Eddy Merckx, now it's time to hang the cleats and watch the new breed of sprinters clash head to head attempting to beat your record. Chapeau Sir Mark "The Manx Missile" Cavendish!

You can see his love for the sport every day he is out there. How many sprinters over the years have managed to drag their rear ends over the mountains? It will be interesting to see how cav decides to deal with his retirement from the physical aspect of the sport. I cant see him giving up the shoes completely. I think some sort of involvement in the sports is on the cards. Whether this be a DS or coaching position. We might get to see cav during the Tour of Brtain one last time.

One of the greatest? Not even close! How many classics has he won? Yes, he has had a long career, won the most number of stages in Le Tour. But he has only ever won sprints, and even then he needed the big lead out trains. To say one of the greatest, lets look at who are really the Greatest. Eddy Merckx, Fausto Coppi, Alfredo Binda, Bernard Hinault, Gino Bartali. Is Cavendish in their league. These riders all won grand tours, won classics, rode entire fields off their wheels. In Eddy's case he won sprints against sprinters every bit as good as Cav, Hinault could win bunch sprints as well. So definitely Cav is not in their league, If you want to talk purely sprinters then lets look, Nakano 10 times world champ, Patrick Sercu 9 times world Pro Sprint champ, won over 90 six day races, won many stages of the TDF, and remember this was when Le Cannibale ate everyone and everything. How about Daniel Morelon, and here my memory fails, but multiple Olympic gold, and multiple world amateur sprint titles. So as far as sprinters go no, Cav is not in their league. Oh, you say road sprinters, OK, how about Rik Van Looy, multiple world road titles, the only rider to win ALL classics, multiple stage wins in both Le Tour and the Giro. Could Cav win Paris Roubaix, Liege Bastogne Liege, Giro di Lombardia? Not a hope in hell! Yes he has won Milan SanRemo, but then apart from Paris Tours that is the next best for pure sprinters. Is Cav the greatest road sprinter in the history of the TDF, of course, he has the record to prove it. But to blanket say one of the Greatest racing cyclists ever, Not a hope in hell!

@myronlarimer1943
@myronlarimer1943 Месяц назад
In my opinion, sprinters add excitement to stages, especially when the GC is decided with a week or more to go. However, they don’t add much substance because most are one dimensional as racers. They can’t compete in the mountain stages nor in the time trials. Due to the biology (dominant fast twitch muscles) they have speed but lack endurance and prolonged strength. They are the novelty that gives teams some bragging rights for some stage wins, but don’t place in the GC. Green jersey should not be considered the second most important award in the TDF. Not saying that they aren’t great athletes, they are. Just saying they are over-emphasized in the Tour. But that is part of cycling’s great tour events. You have races within the race itself. Cavendish, love him or hate him, has added a lot of excitement to a lot of stages.

Pogacar is getting slowly older. Now he is at his peek. When he will turn 28-30 new young riders will rise and they will be probably better than him or at his level. It will not be easy for him to win mountain stages so easily when he gets older. Also Jonas and Remco will get stronger .. Jonas had big crash, for Remco it was his first TDF .. so stronger competition for Pogi next year. Sprinters like Philipsen have better chances .. you can win 2-3 sprint stages per year even if you are older rider. But still the chances are very low .. there is strong competition, they need to stay away from crashes and yeah there are some very talented riders under 20 years. 35 wins is a huge number.
@davidjames3080

I mean, he might do, but he's a loooong way off yet, hardly knocking at the record. He's got a fit Vingegaard to contest with over the next few years as well as other young up and coming stars. He's not even half way to Cav's record, even after winning the TDF 3 times.
