How brave of someone as high profile as Michael to share his own personal experiences, without fear of judgement and not portray himself as a victim or ask for sympathy. He is so honest and genuine he knows where has been and doesn't hide it. How many of today's media even get close to this guy?

Totally agree...used to sit there with my Grandma & brothers ( 8,10&13)...& even at that age loved watching & being fully thrilled at the guest he had on on a Saturday evening...nobody comes close & he was right, there is no mystery anymore due to social media. It's the same 'c' - lebrity people doing the rounds on every show these days. He was classic . People learned a lot from Parky.

I really relate to this interview, thank you Sir Michael for being honest and authentic about your struggles with alcohol. This is almost a mirror of what happened in our house, with me - gently at first and then more assertively - pointing out the damage alcohol was doing and that it needed to go. We did it and we've never looked back. That's not to say it's easy, it's hard to change, there have been good weeks and bad weeks and it is exactly what Michael called it - a drug that happens to be legal.

Congratulations to Parkinson on coming out so honestly. People don't realise that alcoholism is the worst drug addiction because the drug is so socially accepted and expected. NOT the quantity you drink so much as the regularity with which. Anyone who can not endure more than 72 hours without a tipple has to concede that they have a problem; like it or not. You might say what about bingers?? Not quite the same thing and not as abstemious as they'd like to make out between the uncontrollable binges and the lost hours. It is a separate problem, not just the habit of the usual, "every now and then". "Mine's a sherry" says Auntie, "No, not that little glass, a white wine glass, the same as at lunchtime. I have to have it with my soup, the doctor said so; it's good for my heart."

I was 13 in 1963 and living in Manchester, Grenada being the local TV station. So I hardly remember a time when Parky wasn't on television. I remember him first as a local presenter of topical news items. His Northern accent (albeit Yorkshire!) was like a breath of fresh air after listening to so many Southerners with their "posh" accents on TV! It was a time of social change as up to then only daft seeming comics had northern accents on TV.

It's a brave younger TV journalist who embarks on an interview with Sir Michael Parkinson. But Skavlan need not have worried. Parky is down to Earth, engagingly honest and forthright. Also a great entertainer in his own sphere. As a retired newspaper man and radio broadcaster/producer I tried for years to have a sit down with Parky but it never clicked at the right time, even though he was in Australia often. As the fates would have it, I was often in Europe when he was back in my home watching cricket. I have the utmost professional and personal respect for Sir Michael. When I finally was trusted to be sent out to interview well-known actors, movie stars, directors and other 'celebrities' I often used to think, '...what would Parky ask', however, it was oddly, one of Parky's most popular, recurring guests, Michael Caine who gave me a wise tip when talking about acting. He said it was vital to listen to the other actors and re-act, even though the scene might have been rehearsed and ten takes already done. A famous Australian character actor, John Meillon used as his mantra: “Concentrate, really concentrate; listen, really listen.” This was also Parky's secret. He used his famous memory, with research, and plotted a conversation. As another famous actor once said, "Never let them catch you acting!". The only problem I have with this video is that for some bizarre reason someone decided to edit this video so that we hear Parky’s comments about his drinking problem twice. Such a strange thing to do; almost as if the producers were trying to wring as much controversy out of this appearance as possible. If that was, in fact, the case. The person or persons responsible should be ashamed. Not so much so, if it was merely sloppy editing. Thank you for this upload. Cheers, BH

I wish my partner would give up drinking. I mean my ex partner. I tried for over a decade to help but in the end I got custody of the children and told her to choose me or the alcohol. She became an alcoholic. Broke my heart.

She must have too deep pain inside..parkie didn't, so gave up easier.

It's very hard to live and love a alcoholic my mother was one when she had more than her days worth she was very violent I am 73 the pain is still with me

@@christinebories2446 yeah. I understand. My father was lovely when he was sober. Unfortunately he won't sober often and was a horrible violent drunk. To this day, when someone leans in to talk to me with any hint of alcohol on their breath, I feel that childhood terror rise up inside me

@@sallyrile7601 yes. She has very deep pain. From childhood abuse. Things you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

Take it from me, she did not become an alcoholic you do not drink yourself into alcoholism, alcohol/alcoholism is the symptom of something deeper/emotional. Look at it this way before anyone has there first drink there sober.

Skavlan is the worlds best interviewer. A conversationalist at heart but with the intelligence to keep quiet when he needs to. Makes it look simple, which it’s not.

@@richardl772 It sure is. It's so much more enjoyable for an audience when the energy 's relaxed. Really like the setup with everyone at the same level, eye to eye. Not like American shows where the host is perched behind a desk.

Love his interview with Parkinson. Hated school milk (see c. 11 mins in): poured mine down the sink. My parents fed me admirably: I did not want to drink milk, then or ever!

I remember shopping next to Mary Parkinson in a small boutique in Windsor, nr Windsor Castle, in late 70s/early 80s.. I think I was shopping for disco roller skates that I used to skate up & down Windsor Castle's 3 mile Long Walk! Happy days.
