Sire P7 Alder Fretless 4 - sire-usa.com/collections/cust...
Hey everyone! Today we're going to be reviewing the Sire P7 Fretless Alder 4 String Bass. We've looked at many Sire instruments, but one bass we haven't checked out was the P7. I had a tough time deciding WHICH P7 to review, and I'm very happy I chose the fretless 4 string. The P7 Fretless is absolutely one of the most flexible fretless instruments you can get at the sub $1000 price point. Let's check it out!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

I am so glad you finally got around to the P7. It was my first Sire, a 1st gen 4 string. I sold that to buy a 2nd gen 5-string. I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the build quality. It is top notch top to bottom (especially since I swapped out the tuners to Hipshot Ultra-lites). I nicknamed it Dowsky. My 5-string M5 is nicknamed Dera. Both inspired by your review comparisons. The 5-string P7 neck is super smooth satin, but a little thicker than the M5 and only 34" scale. However, the B string is killer on the P7. The 5-string tree at the neck and thru body stringing make it sustain for days. And the tonal flexibility is phenomenal (as you have demonstrated). The binding on the neck is beautiful and nice added touch. The noiseless J (Mwah!). It is a work of art.

Great review (as usual) Lobster! That bass sure has a lot going on tonally, almost overwhelming, with P and J, active/passive and all the possible pre-amp permutations. I never really thought much about a fretless P tone but it really sounded cool. I'm still working on my fretless chops (which were at zero a couple months ago) with my HB JB-40FL. That sure is a fun instrument. I do miss Dale on your channel though. I say bring back "Transcription Tuesday"! Maybe a fretless project with this bass??!

Great Review! I have a Sire v7 Fretless. Fantastic instrument! But realized I had to make 2 mods after taking it to my first gig. 1) the position markers on the side of the neck were impossible to see in a low light room. Fixed it by adding small strips of reflective tape. 2) The single coils were noisy when soloed. Swapped out the stock pickups with noiseless Aguileras. Def a keeper now.

Very nice. My first bass was a fretless Fender p bass with an epoxy coated fingerboard (still have it). I recently aquired an Ernie Ball big Al fretless that has had some sort of finish added to it. The pickups were replaced with custum Nordstrand big blade warm and wooly. Both of my basses were customized with the finish, so it is nice to see that Sire does this standard on their fretless instruments.

Great thorough review as always. Personal preference, but I've never cared for the PJ combo in general (unless the P pickup is reversed). You always think you're getting a J and a P in theory, but in combo I just don't care for the tone compared to a JJ, for example. (especially when slapping). But there's no question Sire's delivering the best bang for the buck out there.

I'd prefer roundwounds but overall a sweet bass! I'd wanted a fretless PJ for a long time - for 2 separate pickup tones (I don't really dig P and J together, and in a fretless bass I prefer soloing one of the pickups anyway). I might think of one of those some time in the future :-)
@johngeddes7894
@johngeddes7894 Год назад
What I notice is that we are given a limited demo of pickup tone. By making the right hand more mobile, we could get a full range sample of the basses to be played. That means plucking not only at the bridge, but from the bridge to the neck. If you want to play like a pro, that’s one way. This is just an option. I won’t lose any sleep over it, but just sayin’ it would be nice to get some nuance from these reviews; as it means adjusting how hard you pluck moving toward the fretboard. It would also facilitate a little more speed effortlessly, , lightening the attack toward the headstock, as opposed to struggling when trying to get jiggy when the occasion calls for it. Not that anything’s bad. I’m always looking where my own playing could be better; mostly any direction I turn.

I guess the switch on the preamp is the active-passive switch rather than frequency selector. and the mid-frequency is selected by stacked knob at mid-eq location. Also interesting that the P5 has a roasted maple neck, while the P7 doesn't..
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster Год назад
Correct. I should have chose my words better and said it was a mid sweep instead of selector.
@Ronofthedead07
@Ronofthedead07 Год назад
The P7 is one of their original models, so it came out before they started doing the roasted necks. The P5 is a newer model (2020 I believe). The swamp ash P7 has been discontinued and succeeded by the P8, which does have a roasted neck. :) Personally I wish the P5 had a PJ configuration, but oh well…

@time.5316
@time.5316 Год назад
I have one of these and I think Lobster is mostly spot-on with his evaluation. I'd disagree a bit about the neck dive however - it isn't so much that it can't be offset by proper choice of strap. I use a leather strap that has a "rough" side with a lot of friction. Also, he suggests offhand at the end of the review that he'd like to see more fretless Sire basses, and I think he probably ought not to hold his breath waiting. I had a fretless U5 on preorder and after waiting six months with no show I gave up and cancelled the order. I'd really prefer a medium scale with PJ pickups and a passive circuit, but not much hope I'll ever see one.
@lummond
@lummond Год назад
Re: the friction strap back thing, you can't defeat physics. If you get a grippy strap, besides your shirt bunching up all the time, you're just going to have the headstock swing farther to the left and have the bridge side of the bass stick out forward. I tried this with the most extreme example of them all, the Warwick Thumb 5 string, and the headstock would almost be behind my left shoulder if I didn't hold the bass still.
@time.5316
@time.5316 Год назад
@@lummond That hasn't been my experience with my shoulder strap, but YMMV. Funny you should mention physics, though, because you can put physics to your advantage to counter-act a diving neck by just moving the back-end strap pin up and forward a bit so your shoulder fulcrum for your strap is farther forward wrt to the bass center of gravity. I've also countered neck-diving by gluing fishing weights in the control cavity, but that's only if there's room and your bass has a fairly light body to start with.
@lummond
@lummond Год назад
@@time.5316 Oh at one point I even resorted to tucking a hammer between the strap button and the strap! On an older 22 fret American Deluxe Fender Jazz V, I ended up installing the Dunlop dual function strap lock/strap button on the horn and the Dunlop flushmount countersunk strap lock at the butt end. It basically shifted the entire bass an inch to the left (lengthening the horn and making the strap flush with the butt end), which helped too!

What i like in american culture is that they are pioneers and what i dislike in Chinese culture is low quality copy/paste .Even if it is not low quality it's still stolen..I respect Marcus Miller and his music.I think musicians like him must be paid , because of making bass guitars popular,but that is not the right way...
