A monopod with feet is not designed to leave it hands free to stand up on its own. It is designed to give you more stability whilst holding it. If you need to go hands free you should use a tripod

thanks for confirming this, I was in line about the buy the Manfrotto, browsing through b&h reviews someone else something similar, they even said the older model manfrotto was better at standing still than this new one, will be getting the sirui instead :))))

I have the aluminum version of this monopod, yes the newer 2017 foot model just like in this video and it has the same problem. I was hoping maybe mine was a bad copy but it looks like it's a design flaw, when you lock the stick, there's way too much play in it. You can't get it straight, it will wobble. You CANNOT walk away from the setup unless the mono is lowered all the way and you are not using a long lens. There's no way to adjust or tighten the locking mechanism either, which would solve the problem.

Why do you extend the thinnest lowest section instead of the thickest section on top? Of course there us more sway when you do that.

is the manfrotto xpro much better than the Sirui? forget about the feet but rather in terms of getting smooth movements-push in etc with the ballhead at the bottom? I have the SIrui 424S and I have never been too happy with it...the twisting locking mechanism is ok. I just want the smoothest motion possible- I have a separate Manfrotto fluid head that can pan and tilt smoothly.

I finally got to play with a Sirui when my second shooter brought one along on a wedding. I loved it except for those damn twist locks. They were just slow and awful. It pains me that Sirui makes me choose between either the base I want or the locking mechanisms I want.

Sirui also wiggles when you release. Also the most frustrating thing, horizons aren't level at different stages of the extension.

I bungee cord a sandbag to the bottom my Sirui for ceremonies and its more stable the a manfrotto tripod. Just sayin...

I bought the new version of the sirui monopod with the flip locks (no trapping your hand bags) and lighter legs from aliexpress a few weeks back with the xpro head to do my first wedding. I love it so far, it was only £90 + another 90 for the head!!

Thanks for the video. I just finished shooting some music video the other day with my Fuji, but this time instead of zoom with OS I used prime lenses so when everything was finished I noticed that my footage is very, very shaky. I used my Manfrotto tripod as a monopod, but this introduced so many small shakes that are impossible to fix in software, movements are too small and too fast. I am now thinking about some great monopod, however I am not sure is it going to be sufficient. My work is usually for music videos with 20 or 30 4 minute long takes in a row, so it is very important for me that my hand does not get tired after some time, that is why I do not use glidecam, it is too heavy if used for long periods. Now I am thinking about the price, well for 400 and little bit more I cold get some gimbal for my small Fuji, so what would you suggest? Is it possible to get fluid, but steady footage with a monopod?

Kraig this model Sirui P-204Sl is good because the model Sirui P-424S is expensive for me. I want stability so I can leave the camera alone for a moment. Thank you and greetings from Spain.

Actually the problem with the wobble isn't the feet, it's because the locking mechanism isn't tight enough, the 204S will not wobble even with smaller feet.

What about the sirui P-326S carbon fiber locking monopod? It's shorter when collapsed than the one on your kit

Anyone else find the panning on these new Manfrotto monopods to be really subpar and unpredictable compared to the older versions, especially when it's in the locked position? Now all the panning (and some tilting) happens in the ball joint instead of in the fluid panning cartridge, and it's not nearly as smooth, and I never know what the resistance is going to be. I've taken it apart, re-greased it, tried all kinds of solutions and fixes, but I haven't had any luck. I've had mine since December and I'm pretty unhappy with it.

I find that I always take my manfrotto monopod with me but nearly always never use it. All my lenses have IS and I have a shoulder rig that is far more flexible for me. With my setup I find it easier to get closer or get shots I wouldn't be able to get otherwise. Obviously there are limitations to the way I do it, but I feel like I am able to be more productive, and for anything where the shoulder mount doesn't work I switch to my tripod with Slider ONE attached. Anybody else just have problems with monopods when it comes to weddings or is it just me? Perhaps I just need to practice more haha.

How would you feel if you replaced the legs with something wider? I have the same monopod but in aluminium, it's a little thicker but suffers from extreme wobble.

Help me, Sirui Carbon Fiber or Aluminum? Carbon Fiber combo with Manfrotto Head is 359.99 on Amazon and the Aluminum is 299.99. Which one is better? And why?

Why are you using the carbon version of the Sirui? According to both of your Amazon links the carbon one is .4 lbs heavier than the aluminum version. What benefit does the carbon one bring being twice the price?

Kraig, I would have to second this. CheesyCam did a review on all 3 of these plus a Benro. Would LOVE your thoughts on the Libec HFMP if possible? I'm about to buy the Sirui only because the Libec appears kinda plasticky in the vid I saw, but not sure if that's actually the case.

I use the Manfrotto 561 BHDV-1 (two generations ago) it came with the 702 head, yes I think the 502 would be too big IMHO

The main culprit is you! There is a reason to use tripods and not monopods. You cannot blame a stick for falling over when you let it go.
