I watched this as a 12 year old excited to see where Return of the Jedi, which I thought about every day for the previous three years, would rank. I was so upset it wasn't chosen. Nearing 50, I agree with Siskel & Ebert.

STAR 80, the first time I seen was so chilling. Eric Roberts as the psychotic Paul Snider was robbed at the Oscar's, as he also wasn't nominated. Only a Golden Globe nomination. R.I.P. Dorothy Stratten. I, as my own critic gave the film ***½.

Terms of Endearment was a good movie and also very sad. But there are some notable films missing from their lists like Return of the Jedi, Scarface, and Trading Places. All of those three were great films and some of the best of the 80’s. I re-watched Trading Places a while ago and it still holds up very well, especially compared to a lot of other 80’s comedies. Movies that came out in the past were overall better than a lot of today’s blockbuster films.

i was 11 in 83, my Father never censored me and Star 80 was on cable constantly for awhile. my Father and his friends would often watch while they were hanging out, presumably because of the nudity and i of course as an 11 year old was watching it all the time on my own for the same reason. but even then i really did understand what a heartbreaking and tragic true story it is. a story of a really vile self absorbed person trying to use a fairly sheltered and sweet young women for his own attention and then trying to suffocate her as she grows, basically literally later on as he stopped getting his way. i lived in Oklahoma and Silkwood was also a standard on cable for awhile and all the more jarring for me as a kid because it took place here. there are still not satisfactory answers in that case. Terms Of Endearment and The Right Stuff are of course classics and wonderful films. some of these others i do not even remember, i may have to look them up. and of course some of my favorite films did not even make either list. but mostly i just look around at the shallow fare we have being released these days, really miss films with some humanity and heartbreak and joy.

Risky Business still seems to pretty loved; it did after all make Tom Cruise a star which is why people still seek it out. I grew up in the shadow of Mission Control among NASA and astronaut families. No one could stand The Right Stuff. It was an atrocious bore that was has been forgotten.

Disney made The Right Stuff TV series last year. Not forgotten at all.

You're joking, right? The Right Stuff is considered a classic movie today, it’s a great film. It's one of the most timeless and best films of the 80's. You're just flat out wrong. It's not an atrocious bore at all and it hasn't been forgotten.

Where is WarGames? It has now become a cult classic for my Generation, I was 10 when I caught this....Sudden Impact was a great police thriller too. The Right Stuff just glorified a period in US space exploration history....it was boring and too long.

What is "US avionics history"? Space exploration is not aviation.

If you post your own top 10 you qualify as being just as pretentious as most Hollywood actors.

The Right Stuff is merely watchable. It has a Hollywood Cheesiness quality to it. Any scene with Barbara Hershey I found to be completely forgettable causing the movie to be way too long (3 hours 13 min). Ways to edit this movie & make it better: (1) Remove any scene with Barbara Hershey. (2) Remove all the Australian Aboriginal scenes (that was pure torture). (3) Remove the cheesy attempt at humor with Harry Shearer (great in Spinal Tap, unnecessary here).

No, The Right Stuff is a great film, one of the best movies of the 80's. It is a timeless classic, it's not just "merely watchable".

I completely disagree, it’s one of the best films of the 80’s. It's a great movie. Go back and watch your Michael Bay films.

I disagree. The Right Stuff, The King of Comedy, Scarface, Terms of Endearment, Return of the Jedi, Dead Zone, Videodrome, Trading Places, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Wargames, Risky Business are classics from that year
