@@Fazuchon While Finland was an ally to Germany during Continuation War (and during Operation Barbarossa there were Wehrmacht regiments next to Finnish ones in the frontline), the Lapland war that happened after that was a real conflict, where the Nazis used scorched land tactics and mined a lot of Lapland. Not all of the mines have been demined even at this point and it took more than 10 years to fix the infrastructure damages. While the actual story of the film is fictional, the war it is set in wasn't. Please, don't spread misinformation.

Just saw this and here’s my thoughts: the strength of the movie is the cinematography. This movie is absolutely stunning to look at with some just powerfully shot scenes. The very beginning with the planes flying overhead might be one of my favorite shots in years. The violence is way up there, the tension is through the roof at times. And the main character…this role was made for him. Highly recommend seeing this movie in theaters.

Sisu as a word first appeared outside of Finland in a Time Magazine article on the Winter War of 1939. @elbaff
@elbaff Год назад
Yeah the marketing was practically non-existent in Finland as well. Shame considering how good it is.
@anthonygregory6797
@anthonygregory6797 Год назад
The marketing was simple, they released a trailer with a bunch of random action scenes and then throughout the trailer said this is the greatest trailer ever made. Not only were they so egotistical that they thought their own trailer was the greatest trailer ever made, but they kept pushing it to the point that they try to make it the biggest thing ever, and what's worse is they hid behind the label that they're the same people that made John Wick and the fact that this movie is about saving a dog. They pretty much pulled on the heartstrings of people to get people to like this movie while also having an inflated ego to the point that you say that your trailer is the greatest trailer ever released. This movie is a film I will not support simply due to the fact that they're so full of themselves and it makes me not want to watch the film. I'll just go re-watch John Wick 4 again.

The scene when the man stands facing the tank and trucks driving up to him as the soldiers stand in place is so unremarkably well captured. "Sisu is a unique Finnish concept. It is a Finnish term that can be roughly translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity." Greetings from Finland. I already saw it months ago since it came earlier to cinema here in Finland. After all those 3 hour marvel movies its refreshing to see a movie that keeps things simple. Just one guy against a group of nazis. Loved the gore and how brutal the action was. Jorma Tommila was also made for this role, cant think of any other Finnish actor who could have pulled this of. The last 1/3 gets little bit goofy with cheesy dialog(in the wrong way) and the last action sequence felt too over the top compared to the rest of film. But in overall, a solid film, would love to see this character again.

I'm going to have to throw in a quick comment about the plane "disintegrating" at the end of the movie. The plane dove indeed into a large swamp (quite recognizable to local folk). Apparently these swamps can reach the depths of even 10 meters, although 2-4 meters is more common. Still nonsensical, but I guess that's what they were going with. Regardless, if you fall into an eye of a swamp, it can be damn near impossible to pull yourself out on your own. Apparently this guy did just that. I think the story of this man is a kind of an exaggerated amalgamation of all of the stories behind many of the Mannerheim Cross recipients. Here's one as an example from Corporal Fisk: At one point, the company he was attached to was the target of a surprise attack by enemy forces. The young corporal decided that they needed additional support, and dashed away. To get his message through, he had to cross terrain covered by fire from 10 heavy machine guns, more than 10 light machine guns, other infantry weapons, as well as heavy mortar fire. Getting through to the own forces, he was then able to call in artillery support to save his company. A year later the Soviet Union attacked and captured a Finnish strongpoint codenamed ‘Sevastopol’. Gerdt volunteered to take part in the counterattack to recapture it, and according to the records charged forward as the first man. Armed with a sub-machine gun and hand grenades, he took out tens of enemies, always heading for where the fighting was the fiercest. He also dragged the mortally wounded captain Toffer, another Mannerheim Knight, back to the Finnish lines, after which he swiftly returned to the battlefield. His example is quoted as playing an important role in ensuring that the counterattack succeeded. Shortly after this he was decorated with the Mannerheim Cross, and in 1943 promoted to officer in the reserve, taking part in course number 57. He was wounded three times, including during the fighting at Sevastopol, before he was discharged after the end of the war in November 1944. End Quote. I've read accounts much crazier than this. Liked the review. Liked the movie. Have a good one.

I think I'm going to drive a couple hours over to the closest city playing this to see it tomorrow. If not tomorrow then definitely next week. *Edit Just got back from seeing this. Yes, an incredible movie. A few things where you reallllly have to suspend disbelief but I'm ok with it because I view this movie as a retelling of a legend of this man. Most stories get more and more embellished in the retelling, So in this telling, a bunch of his feats esp near the end are almost superhuman. But I didn't care. Nazis getting destroyed? Hell ya! Im going to buy this when I can.

Finnish man during world war 2 era were more hardy that the main character in Sisu. And during Winter War were Finnish fought by themselfs against Sovient Union, was full of Tall Tale but real stories: Here is one of them. Called, miracle of Winter War. 1939. Sovient Union attacks Finland. Infantry company 40 that is made from senior citizens of Finland, with poor military equipment, is doing military refresher course, when company leader Major Armas Perksalo get note, that puts Ic40 into the war. Armas and his senior company had impossible task at hand. Their job was to stop Sovient Union attacks and prevent them to go Sweden through Salla mountain. 1500 soldiers Ic40 included went against 20 000 Sovient Union soldiers. 18 december 1939. You could get anything from the sky: Water, snow, anything. And temperature was between minus 86°F and minus 104°F. Weather during that time was extraordinary. To Finns it was advantage, as Finns didn't have any high tech equipment of that time like tanks, or cars. To Sovient it was bad. Part of the Finnish 1500 men decided to flank Sovient troops, but Finns didn't have any way of contacting to other Finns so nobody knew what anybody was doing. So Finns troops were scattered all around battlefield without knowing what others were doing, because of this Sovient troops started to be scared and panic as they heard sound of war all around them. They started feel like there were billions of Finns, that were everywhere. And all the sudden a Sovient soldier dropped dead into his truck. It was last drop to Sovient. In terror and panic they retreat, as weather was horrible nothing worked and they got kicked ass by punch of senior citizens who seemed to be all around them. Finns won that battle. And today on that same battlefield is a memorial stone that reads: "God was with us." We Finns are hardy in real life too, almost as if we were biological Terminators with luck of Han Solo.

To make a hollywood looking action flick with a 6mill.. it's the embodiment of sisu in itself as a finnish guy. You just make it happen, build a solid beautifull table with some scrap wooden sticks if you have no other means or choice.

My opinion as a Finnish person is that many swamps at the northern periphery of Finland are actually quite deep and mostly water. So MAYBE the plane didn't actually pulverise or get disintegrated it could've been that the plane just "sunk underwater" and Aatami Korpi as the SisuMan survives the impact because he is a mythological immortal Finnish superhero

As a Finn, very happy to see this review. Personally I agree with AJ with his two points taking the number from 10 to 9. I Liked Sisu more than John Wick 4, because EVERYONE had magic suits which were bulletproof, and EVERYONE was supposed to be secret super-agent. It was like a parody of John Wick. Sisu has few issues, but still much less.
