In this video, I am so excited to bring you my reaction to "The Good Doctor" season 6, episode7 where sextuplets (six pregnancies) and preemies are born.
I am a real life neonatologist and nicu specialist who attended in real life the delivery of quintuplets or delivery of five babies. This episode looks at how the medical residents and surgical attendings deal with the delivery and management of these infants, including common diagnoses such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, respiratory distress syndrome, and apnea of prematurity. Let's see how this show actually compares to real life. What all the way to the end to see a bonus comment regarding naming of multiple babies.
The Good Doctor airs on ABC and it is a show about medical trainees called interns and residents, who are learning from surgeons about the field of surgery and all it entails. Dr. Sean Murphy, the main character is actually a savant, a highly skilled and exceptionally gifted individual, who also happens to have autism spectrum disorder, an umbrella term encompassing autism.
I will admit that I had not seen this show before, but many of my friends had and wanted me to react to the episode. Honestly, I think the shows does a fantastic job at portraying life as residents and specifically to this episode, how challenging it is to manage a delivery of multiples. The attention to detail on the show is marvelous and for the most part, the language and images used is quite accurate.
I hope you enjoy checking out this reaction video. It is rather entertaining and great for #healthcare professionals and #parents alike. Please let me know you like this with a "LIKE" and tell me in the comments section what other shows you would like me to react to.

Also biggest issue I have with this show is that medical specialities are just not a thing. All major previous medical shows show the differences between OBs and cardiologist and neonatologists, etc. In this show these are legit general surgeons with no speciality taking care of NICU patients at bedside. It’s very odd

LOL...so true. Happens in a lot of shows though. In Law and Order or CSI, they go well beyond their job descriptions. If people would follow our day to day, they would change the channel. Need to make it crazy... but real. Makes for great TV though 😄

They have to intubate the baby for surgical repair anyway! It can be done. We prone babies frequently!!

Yep... can be done... but in general, the show did a good job at showing our NICU world. Do you have other shows or clips where you saw NICU and thought WHAT? 😄

@@thenicudoc Goodness yes! Pretty much any depiction of a NICU cracks me up. They tend to just include them in a section of the ER which is not realistic. My all time favorite was a movie from 2013 with Paul Walker where he had to keep his infant alive in a NICU with a hand crank generator to run the vent. No Iv tubing or boundaries. Not even an attempt at authenticity. Still so fun to watch though!

Hi “Spina Bifida Baby” here! At 5:53 I had to laugh at the Doctor saying “it’s Spina Bifida” so calmly and then just passes the baby off as if that’s not a MAJOR life altering (and in the past, life threatening) birth defect!🤣 I needed surgery immediately after birth to close my back and I also had a shunt (a man made machine that helps drain the fluid in my head which my body cannot do on its own) put in as a result of my hydrocephalus (A build-up of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain) which is common in babies with Spina Bifida. I have no idea why the doctors are acting like closing her back and getting her to breath on her own is the end of this family’s struggles. All that being said, today I live a completely full life from a wheelchair (paralyzed from the waist down) and am current attending college. While I agree that the doctor(s) should prepare the parents for the worst, I want people who see this comment to know Spina Bifida is not an automatic death sentence.

@@thenicudoc Of Course and I appreciate your take on this episode. I hope that there will be more representation of Spina Bifida and other things like it on other shows so you can keep making these videos which helps spread awareness of these real life conditions

Im a seasoned NICU nurse and my husband absolutely refused to watch this episode with me! He could hear me through the walls though lol!! None of the Docs are NICU or MFM. I love your channel and am so glad I found you! I will be sharing it with all my coworkers and new NICU nurses.

I think what they mean is that it appears to be more for lay people. Many things explained NICU people already know. While this was nice to watch. I was hoping for a higher level commentary. Some of the stuff they did was absolutely crazy. And these babies all going home within days is crazy, would be helpful to hear more about how what they did is very different than real life

For example. ABDs and PDAs are pretty much expected for micropremies and not major medical discovery moments…
