I love how those scanner controllers were clearly built with parts off the shelves of an early 80's Radio Shack.

In the 80's I posed the question in electronics class of us making the scanner. I remember us using step up power transistors to light the bulbs. We didn't use relays. But that 555 timer chip worked only when it felt like, or until we found one in the parts bin that actually worked lol

Funny thing about that cinch connector. So changers that were installed inside vending machines from that era used exactly that same connector. I reconized it straight away because I manage a vending company and we still have those old changers LOL.

Fascinating again! I am amazed that they used H1 bulbs in those scanners. That is essentially a 55 to 68 watt high beam headlight lamp! Joe, here's a question for you. You said that every control box did a basic scan, and there was one box used for more complex patterns like one way scan/Soul Survivor. So my question is, how did they achieve the all on followed by scan sequence? Any time we see this, are they using the 1 special box? Or do the normal boxes have the ability to do this too? Interested to hear your thoughts!

@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial I had a 1981 Corvette, and I watched the pilot of Knight Rider when it debuted on NBC. I thought the Pontiac Firebird and dash was incredible so I made some phone calls to Universal in Burbank and finally got ahold of someone who told me it was Mike Scheffe that designed the car for the pilot. They gave me his phone number, I remember he was living or working in Marina del Rey at that time. I got ahold of him and talked with him for some time, he was absolutely fantastic. I remember he told me the pilot car, KITT was stolen by some young guy who broke in to the Universal Backlot lot and security chased him and the car crashed and was wrecked. I believe that was the reason for the change in the scanner location. Because they had to rebuild another hero car. I hope I remembered that correctly, it's been quite a few years. Lol. I'm sure Mike could clarify it. I told him I wanted to build the dash and put it inside my 81 Corvette. I asked if he had any type of pictures that he could send up to me. He said that he could and that he would, he took my name and address and sent me these beautiful colour photocopies of pictures that were taken during the building of the dash and KITT the Knight Rider car. In each picture he described what was happening and the pictures showed the team that Mike assembled to build the dash and customize the rest of the car. I still have those colour photocopies stored in my boxes of collectible items. I did build the dash, and I had a working digital speedometer and tachometer and it turned out great, and it was thanks to Mike for his kindness. I then got a hold of Universal Studios and the electronics department and talked with a gentleman by the name of Dick Chronister. Dick was handling the electronics for the Knight Rider series and also for Airwolf. I told him I was coming to Los Angeles and would really like to meet with him. He told me when I got to LA, give him a call and he'd leave my name at the front gate and I could come in and we'd visit. That is exactly what happened. Dick was an absolutely marvellous individual, and took me around and showed me the one Studio where the dash was mounted on a wooden stand and all the cables came out the back over to a control board that manipulated all the LEDs the digital speedometer and tachometer. They had a camera in the studio and whatever shot they needed according to the script, a close up of the dash was done there and then edited in to the rest of the episode that was being filmed for that week. He took me around and showed me a number of the Knight Rider stunt cars, you could see some of the damage on the fiberglass body, but as he explained the camera wouldn't pick it up when it was being filmed. Dick gave me one of the Bank of switches that was installed on the Center Council inside of KITT. It was absolutely a great visit, and I give thanks to Mike Scheffe and Dick Chronister for everything that they provided to me and for taking the time to explain everything they did so that I could recreate the dashboard in my 81 Corvette. Now we have companies that manufacture the dashboard all LEDs everything. It was a great time and my dash did look good in the Corvette, obviously a little smaller scale compared to a Trans Am. To everyone that has their own KiITT, enjoy it for it is truly the coolest car that has ever appeared on the TV screen.

@@morganrussman there's not much information or suggestions on the Web that I've been able to find, the only other one that sounds plausible to me is it's rope/sword type 'whooshing' sound recording?
