also to move between words use control left and right arrow, to move all the way to the beginning of a line use the home key, to delete entire words one can also use shift ctr left arrow to delete the word
I know this is a old video, but I don't fully agree with some things here. Posture is important, but having a wristrest is also a viable option instead of having your wrist floating. Using the correct fingers is generally a good idea, but especially with the qwerty layout I don't think it is the be all and end all. There are plenty of typist, even the current fastest typist Sean Wrona averaging at 175wpm that doesn't fully follow the "correct finger" rules. I personally use the Dvorak layout where it actually makes sense to use the "correct fingers" but qwerty layout is really not made for the traditional home row method. I average 110-120 wpm myself.
You can use CTRL-Backspace to delete whole words. This is the next skill I want to incorporate into my technique. If you can train yourself to do it while staying in home row anchored to the f and j, this can save a lot of time especially as you strive for upper echelons of speed. But it’s also very useful for everyday typing
Has voice typing tech gotten good enough to replace touch typing? If the world's fastest typer and the world's fastest talker get together would the typist keep up? Probably not, now "thought typing (at the speed of thought) in the future haha given what we think at first thought not such a good idea ha
I don't think that's a good idea as it will create a bad habit. If you ever have to type on another pc where you are not allowed/able to change the function of caps lock then you'll be forced to use the backspace which you don't have the habit of using. So, it's better to stick to the actual keys.
To people who takes a one minute online speedy test that rely on the 100 common words like "the be and hi what etc" and say their highest speed is 140 wpm first it is your RECORD speed, 2. counting the correct ones means it can be at 100 wpm, and practiced on common 100 words ? or average online article? average article will make your speed 70wpmwith full text with symbols like [] ) ( = ; : " etc.. and typing for 10 minutes not 1 minute speedy test make your average lower to 70 to 40 wpm. The longer the test the slower your hand will be do longer test and see for yourself. exaggerating the initial figure is a well known tendency it situate your hypothetical 140 wpm between 25 to 30 wpm that is the truth for the majority. Sorry I have to put the LOL here. but it is an advice . Of course there are many w who type fast at sustain speeds, but the majority base on common words, no punctuation, at 1 min test.
I was wondering about the speed everyone was reporting Just beginning practice and appreciate your honesty and I'll be sure to test myself with all keys included and be sure to use a decent length of content
@@pamelavance648 plus most our typing nowadays is a paragraph or 2.. say between 100 to 150 words.. it would not matter if you type it in 1:00 min or 1:20.. the effort of learning to lower it 20 seconds is not worth it.. for average typist of course.
Pamela, and I forgot to mention I practiced an hour a day, in 15 or 10 min sets.. so I do not get fatigued, nor bored, nor HURT my wrest, becareful NOT to place your hands on the keyboard, that would make your wrest hurt, rather your hands should be gliding or hovering over the keyboard you can download a program to modify your keyboard so the CapLock key which is useless can be used as backspace, so your write hand won't get hurt like mine..because if you notice your wrist turns and twist harshly to find that backspace especially if yo practice for long.. I had a problem with it, but if you ask me now I would have practiced for 20 min a day, in 7 min or 5 min sets.. this way you will avoid any risk. Hope that help Pamela.
Hi one question, i using the website ratatype for practicing my typing and i wanted to ask you how much time should a beginner put each day to practice P.S my bad for my grammar English is my second language
Though I am viewing this in school, I type in my own way/style. I will continue to do so as I performed 140 words per minute before. Be yourself if it makes you good :)
One other tip I have is to learn to type numbers using the upper row and not the key pad. This increases both speed and accuracy as you don't have to move your right hand back and forth from the home row to the key pad.
keyboarding Online, thanks for these greaat advice. When you say maintain your index finger on the J as anchor while doing backspace is great advice I do that.. but do you mean that with other keys like maintaining the index finger on J and doing the further keys like + sign or other further key, sometimes it is hard to keep it anchored with some combination. thansk for this great video. Also I read study that average error is 8% is those error counted as they are made or after correction made counted as 8% meaning is it chosing wrong keys regardless if corrected afterward or not? do you know? thanks
never mind Ichanged that backspace and swap it with the ; key which is useless key to be in the home row. this eliminate the pain associated with twisting your hand as it reach to the backspace key. also you can use the cap lock key for enter, or space if it hurt your thumb.
I have always typed with the wrong technique, my hands just fly everywhere and I completely ignore the home row, somehow, my accuracy is still pretty decent and I get 80-110wpm. Good enough, I guess (I'm 11.)
@@GreenLantern167 Man, completely forgot I made this comment. I am indeed 18 now, lol, I’ve since learned to touch type using the home row and gotten a lot faster
TIP 7 - don't use the keyboard in the video ... I have the same and it's horrible for typing ...the keys gets jam so often as it gets older a little bit ...the keys are structured too close to each other and it's kinda crooked ..
I have a problem with the C part. I can't seem to stop typing a "b" with my right hand when it is supposed to be the left hand. I did it twice writing this sentence. Any tips to help with breaking that habbit? (I just did it 3 more times. ;-;}
Repetition is key! Create a mini lesson for yourself involving the letters that you struggle with, eventually the muscle memory will kick in and you won't have that problem anymore. -KBO
You can try a different keyboard. Try one that requires less force on key presses. In a mechanical keyboard, look for Cherry MX blue or red switches. Many cheap keyboards, and even some expensive ones have key caps that are not depressed evenly. They tend to tilt into one of the four corners as you press it down. One such keyboard is Logitech MX3200. This is a common problem on rubber dome keyboards. But there are great and cheap rubber dome keyboards that don't have this problem. It's usually the "modern" looking keyboards, like curved and sleek multimedia keyboards that have this problem. Don't go for the looks, go for functionality when you look at a rubber dome keyboard. The regular, cheap, pale looking, wired keyboards usually beat the fancy, expensive, and wireless keyboards in this department. But you may have to try a few cheap rubber dome keyboards before you find "the one". Logitech K series are usually good in this category. But they don't make them like they used to anymore. So try to find an older model, in the K2xx range. They have the famous scissor switch mechanism. So the key caps move evenly like they should on any quality keyboard. So have a look at the keyboard you're using. It may be bad for your pinky. As for finger placement, don't worry about it too much. Don't listen to everything these typing professors say. Take some of the advices with you but find your own way for touch typing. Every one of us are unique, and no single typing technique can fit all.
Well that's normal. It's only natural to use a stronger finger. I also use the ring finger for some keys where I should be using the pinky. But I do okay when typing. I do about 80 WPM and it's good enough for me. For me, it's more important to type with less errors than to type super fast with a lot of errors. I do much better with the numeric keypad for number crunching, but unfortunately many new laptops don't have the numpad. I imagine that in a very near future the so called "laptops" will not have any keyboards at all. Many of the new devices already lack a keyboard, like the many tablets where the keyboard is an accessory. We will all be pressing fingers against the screen. Yuk! I don't like this one bit, but this is where the industry wants us to go so we will have to adapt and follow. At that point these touch typing tutorials will become obsolete, irrelevant... a thing of the past! So it's best to start learning how to touch type on a touch screen... ?!?! Error! Brain damage! Error! Lol! Unless of course they can make a touchscreen from living matter and make the keyboard keys rise up and protrude through the screen whenever typing is needed, and then sink back in into the screen when no longer needed. But that's too science fiction, at least for now.
Samir Gunic Tl;dr so you are saying that I can do just fine with the way I type on an actual keyboard and I should instead practice on typing on a touchscreen?
Exactly! You got it! ;-) Even though you didn't read it all... Just use whatever finger placement you feel comfortable with, and forget about these typing professors.
Same here, I lay my left hand out in a PC Gamer style; WASD - Space and Shift, which is a default habit of a PC gamer. For my right hand I place my right index finger on k instead of J. My other 3 fingers on (L) (;) and (@) When I want to hit G or H, I can still reach with my index fingers, and I can back space with my pinky finger without taking fingers of my home row. I can type at a speed of 144-150 WPM, and around your speed when I am just typing in general, like right now.
There was a time when many people took classes to learn how to type, so touch typing was a lot more common, but I just learned by using a computer all my life. As a result, my typing style bears no resemblance to touch typing, but I type faster than a good majority of people (nowhere near 118wpm though. Good on you).
+John Smitten Me too, I can do 105 average on my Macbook and 85-95 on my PC Mechanical keyboard however my technique is a real mess. I'm trying to correct some flaws that affect my accuracy but it's hard to retrain your brain when you're been typing for 30 years.
+ÆÐELFRIÐ I tend to use different finger layouts for different(well, there's only 2) occasions. for gaming, I put my left hand on w,a,s,d, shift and ctrl, and spacebar. Since my pinky is not enough to press a key, I slide my left hand leftwards and move my thumb on D. As for typing, I tend to put my left pinky resting either on shift or ctrl(winkey is a little awkward for my pinky), then ring finger on a or s(or sometimes in between of them) and then the rest is just as shown, same story for right hand, but this time pinky in resting on either / or '. Then the ring finger on l or ;.
Correct posture is one of the most important, as this allows for free movement and prevents carpal tunnel. If you would like to practice typing you can try our home version of our program at www.keyboardmastery.com
I'm trying to get 60+ wpm.Because the teacher said that if I get 60+ he'll give me his watch (original curren) so now I'am here....btw mine is 17wpm....xDD fml
I have noticed that when I type with my finger nails, my speeds struggle. Everyone will type differently, but as long as you maintain proper positions and posture, you will be able to avoid RSI and you may find that the more you type the correct way, the more your speeds will increase. -KBO
We recommend typing for at least 30 minutes per day for at least 3 months. The real key is muscle memory, with enough time and practice, you will be able to master touch typing. -KBO
Memorize the keyboard, I'm looking straight at the screen, and I'm using an IBM SK-8820 membrane keyboard on the PS/2 port. I type at around 80-100WPM.
aha accuracy? practiced on common 100 words ? or average online article? my speed is 90 with frequent words, but 60 wpm in an average article.. and 2 min text only So let us see 117 minus frequent words means 70 full text with [] ) ( = etc.. makes it 50 and writing more than 1 min test in most online cheap test say 10 min.. it situate your typing at 40 word per minute. and I am sure 117 was your best speed meaning you really average 100 if at all true.. that makes your real speed 25 to 35 wpm sorry I have to put the LOL here. but it is an advice
