Yeah, MLS isn't stopping at 30 teams. It's eventually going to hit 32 teams.
Several USL teams will by vying for one of those expansion slots. Things can change, but as of right now, these are the top six candidates (in my opinion).
Did I get them right? Which markets did I leave off? Let me know!

Out of those six, Phoenix is the most likely to enter. Problem with Louisville (of which I am a supporter btw) is Nashville and Cincy are stone throw away so MLS would likely not want to saturate the market but more importantly, while the current ownership group is great, they don't have 250 million to fork up for an entrance fee. Only way for them to enter would be by local investment from Papa John, Humana or YUM Brands.

I think Birmingham Legion FC has the ability to do well in the MLS. They Can bring in crowds if given the chance. Case in point: They had a preseason friendly with that Atlanta United you mentioned... I went to that game myself. It was soldout and rocking! And the game was very entertaining. Atlanta United even kept in some of their starters in the second half. But for it to be only a PRESEASON game... that kind of crowd just goes to show you soccer could do well in Birmingham. Couple that with the fact that they will be moving into the new downtown stadium that's being built with a possible capacity of 40,000. Their is a LOT of potential going on with Birmingham Legion FC.

It’s kinda strange some pretty massive American cities don’t currently have ANY pro soccer teams. MLS or USL. Baltimore, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Cleveland, just off the top of my head. And you can sort of throw Detroit and Jacksonville in there, too, since their teams are in limbo. It’s one of the biggest areas we still need to grow. And it’s why MLS continuing to expand doesn’t worry me at all. There’s still countless cities the USL can add teams that MLS will never touch.
@macaronsareawesome3605

I think It may be a good idea to have a different Maryland city or county have a top tier team for a change because Baltimore has almost all of the top franchises when Maryland has a county with at least 16.3% of it´s population in Maryland which is Montgomery County and has 400,000 more people than Baltimore I think putting a professional team there weather it will be USL or MLS will be important because it is a highly untapped market. Germantown Silver Spring Gaithersburg Rockville or Bethesda could be good locations

The whole time I was watching this video I (as a Louisville City fan) was like "yeah we do that too, or even better", so I loved getting to the end and hearing it said by an outside observer. "Louisville City just checks all of the boxes" well said! In the before times I would drive past Lynn Family Stadium every morning on my commute and it's absolutely beautiful on a clear sunny day. I do understand that we're like an hour or two away from multiple other bigger markets but I don't think that many people right now in Louisville are spending money supporting Indy or Cincy (unless they have roots from there) there just isn't that much overlap, and I think Louisville getting an MLS franchise would certainly not hurt those teams, as much as it would bring in casual fans/people who aren't particularly into soccer by legitimizing the team as "major league" (I love the team but I see people from time to time dismiss it on account of not being MLS.

Agreed- I grew up near that area and I can’t see Louisville people driving to Cincy or Nashville for a soccer game. Yeah, I think they should bring Louisville into the league. There are no major league sports teams in Louisville, only minor league. MLS should also put a team in either Richmond or Norfolk-Virginia Beach. Birmingham is also another quality candidate, given the popularity of soccer in the South. A lot of kids in the South play soccer, far more than up in the northeast and midwest. Only parts of the west even come close in this regard. Just look at attendance for the northern teams. They are abysmal in comparison to the southern teams. Atlanta and Charlotte are one and two in attendance. Chicago is downright pathetic in attendance.

As a hartford supporter we finished second to bottom in the league last season and still sold 5000 seats in our 5500 seat stadium. The stadium has had previous plans approved and had actually begun to be made into an nasl stadium that could hold over 15000 while being expandable but that fell through after some money laundering incident (I’m not sure exactly what happened). But our stadium is on a sight where we could expand it into a 20000 seat stadium and play at Pratt and Whitney Stadium while it’s being built but we just remodeled Dillon Stadium so it’s doubtful that we’re gonna see anything like that happen in the next 5 seasons

I disagree. I think CPL needs to stay separate and grow on its own. If this pandemic proved anything its that the Canadian MLS teams would perhaps benefit greatly from being in CPL and not have to deal with the crazy travel/quarantine fiascos they’ve had to endure just to play american competition.

If I had to pick two it would be Vegas and Louisville. You have a small hardcore market in Loucity contrasted with a bigger market in Vegas. Vegas does seem like a wildcard but keep in mind when we talk about supporting a team it doesn't just come from the immediate city but also the surrounding neighborhoods. Henderson and the neighboring towns will embrace this team.

@willp.8120 Год назад
Las Vegas already has hockey, football, and looks to be getting baseball, soon. It is also extremely hot and I don't think that it is a good fit for the MLS given the dry heat. I'd actually pick Louisville over Las Vegas, as I see them having better attendance.

As a Louisville City supporter it's nice to see praise and mention of our beautiful club. As bih bih. already said in the comments, Nashville and Cincy being in the league and us being close regionally, doubtful MLS would want us in the league. I prefer it this way. Louisville isn't a big market, probably bigger than Cincy but smaller than Nashville. We would probably be on a similar playing field to those guys and we see how that's worked out for them in MLS (racking up Ls). I'm confident there will be Pro/Rel in my life time and then we'll see Louisville earn a spot in MLS. If not, continuously dominating USL sounds good.

I am Ecuadorian but I lived in Maryland do agree it's about time Maryland has another profesional team in the scene, and Baltimore is a great place but with an NFL and MLB side i'm not so sure not to forget that Maryland and Soccer has been mostly unknown because of the fact that there are not soccer or football clubs in the state in USL. I do agree thes support is great but we need a USL Championship-2 team to see if Marylanders will like it. But if Baltimore won't work I think a club in Montgomery County could be interesting because a rivalry could be created with DC United and the Maryland Club, it has a huge untapped market for a professional soccer club to be established there, same could be said for Prince George County as well

Louisville totally deserves to be on the top of this list. As a huge fan, I know the local soccer culture really well. There are more private youth academies here than in a lot of cities with MLS teams. Many youth teams are the most dominant in the region. On top of that they have a really fierce rivalry with FC Cincinnati. I mean fierce. The games are scrappy and the fans come out in record numbers. I really hope we end up in the MLS someday. We would be so much better than people expect.

the only way it would work is if MLS is operating the second tier. USL is not good enough to sustain MLS level clubs, and their clubs are not good enough for MLS standards. Liga MX wants to do away with pro/rel for the next 5 years for this reason.

Only way this happens is the much debated Liga MX/MLS super league. 10 MLS Teams 8 Liga MX Bottom 2 American/Canadian teams relegate to MLS and vice versa Bottom 2 Mexican Clubs relegate to Liga MX. Something of the sort. MLS and Liga MX would still be exactly what they are now with a more lucrative league above both of them. USL is a financial disaster and doesn’t offer anything the MLS clubs don’t already get with their youth squads. Couldn’t even sustain a team in Fresno for 3 Years.

I don't know. With the others sports leagues being what they are, it would be tough, although I would love to see it. I also think it would work even better in college football, where schools like Vandy, Rutgers and Oregon State would have to earn their keep in a P5 and decent 2nd tier teams like BYU, Louisville and even Boise State could get there. It would make for some interesting games, even late in the year with poorer teams having to play well to stay alive.

I think Tampa Bay Rodies are ready. They got stadium plans and you got that rivalry with Orlando and Miami brewing. Over all, I think Phoenix should be the first on the list to promote to MLS because Arizona would be a new market for MLS and it's a big market. Plus they have their own stadium and rich owners. Louisville is already surrounded by FC Cincinate and Columbus crew. The market wouldn't be new.

Great video. First up, I see why they want to spread teams around the country, but what they might be missing is that teams, and therefore the fans, thrive when they have local derbies to enjoy. So why not another Texas based team? Harder in a country as vast as America I know. . Second, in the same way there's an Ajax in Cape Town, I wonder why there isn't a sister club in Boston to Glasgow Celtic, or even a football team linked to an NBA or NFL team? This happens all the time in Europe with Barcelona and Real having top Basketball teams... I say get the league to 44 teams then split the leagues into MLS and MLS2. Keep up the good videos!

No one is talking about Indy, they are definitely going to the MLS! They're finally starting work on their stadium and I predict after 1 season in the USL with their new stadium, they'll get into the MLS. People are saying Phoenix is most likely but they just made a new stadium and it wasn't as they promised with they're Anfield-like stadium but instead just cheaped out and made a regular USL stadium.
