VI Variations sur les Folies d'Espagne, Op.45 (6 Variations on the theme of Folies d'Espagne) by Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829). This is a great work that I've used many times to transition intermediate students into the advanced level. It's not Giuliani's most ambitious set of variations by any means. As long as intermediate students have their technique of scales, arpeggios, barre, slurs, and stretch are under control it's an accessible work. That said, in the hands of a professional it can be taken well into the advanced level with higher tempos.
The folies d’Espagne or folias is a famous theme mainly presented as a chord progression, probably of Iberian origin. From the Renaissance to today it has become a popular theme for variations. Baroque guitarists and lutenists used the theme regularly as did major composers such as Handel, Corelli, Vivaldi, and Boccherini. Guitarists, such Sor in his Op.15, love the theme for its simplicity and how it lends itself to a variety of textures from arpeggios to melodic embellishment. The theme is also known as La Folía, or Follies of Portugal, folies du Portugal or folies d'Espagne, La Follia, and Folias. You can read the wiki on folios here (en.wikipedia.o....

Haha, I'm so distracted by the new puppy that I forgot to include the 3rd variation in yesterdays post, here's the updated video!

That is the most acceptable answer for forgetting!

I can"t tell you how I enjoyed your program with all your advice how to play the pieces. I stopped playing 10 yeard ago due to look after my late husband. Now I am so sorry I have stopped and even sold my guitar. Your playing has spurred me on to buy a guitar again and start playing again. Thank goodness I still have all my music books. Thank you so much for making a video of Sor's studies. I am following your lessons from now on. Kind regards Beppie from South -Africa.

Thank you so much! Great performance! I am just breaking my fingers on this piece as I am a beginner (about 1,5 years lessons via Zoom. I love your videos as they are really really helpful. A big difficulty for me is the last part (Allegro vivace) as you have to play some notes shortly and some not in the same chord 🙈 Greetings from Germany!

Ya, this is really a too difficult if you're just starting out. But ya, the final movement is a bit hard to control the texture. Greetings from Canada.

Dear Bradford, I would be very interested about your thoughts on learning a piece like this by heart. Why didnt you do so? How much more energy would you have had to spend? Are there pieces that are not generally memorised? I find especially the forth variation really hard to get into my head. Any tips on that? Lots of question for a busy man :o). Any answer is appreciated. Best wishes from Germany.

So the main thing about me is that for the website's weekly content I really can't memorize everything. I'm trying to do two new performance videos a week so it would be difficult. For my own personal concert repertoire I try to memorize as much as possible. Variations are at least easy in that you can memorize one at a time. I do have a lesson. on memory tips: www.thisisclassicalguitar.com/lesson-how-to-memorize-music/

i know this is a late response, but the fourth variation for me was mostly easy, except the second row. Try to memorize a row by row and you will slowly get it going. First three are pretty easy to memorise.

its not supposed to be metronome perfect, it loses its soul when you play it in the 21st century
