6-year-old Lydia Golding was born with Proximal Femoral Focal Disorder (PFFD), resulting in her right femur bone being significantly shorter than her left. Lydia, like any kid, just got on with what she can do, playing and having fun while wearing a prosthetic on her shorter leg. In 2021 Lydia’s parents Lauren and Hamish made the decision to travel to the US for surgery to repair her hip socket and lengthen her right leg. Lydia, her mum, and baby sister Rose were there for 11 months for the surgery and intensive post-op therapy. The total cost of the operation and living away from home topped $500,000, and alongside fundraising, the family also remortgaged their house to cover the cost. Now back home in NZ Lydia’s physio team are impressed with her remarkable recovery. She is doing gymnastics, ballet and loves playing on the monkey bars at school. Lydia still has a way to go, with further surgeries necessary to get both feet on the ground. As Lauren and Hamish grapple with the question of whether to return to the US for treatment they are also working hard to give Lydia every opportunity to live a full life, and to love herself and her body.
