I was in high school in the 80s, political correctness has robbed future generations of such a great time for teenagers.

For as many times as I've seen this movie, there's one thing I never noticed until you mentioned it. Long Duk Dong is not only using his knife and fork backward, but he's doing it because he's using them as chopsticks.

Back in the 80's and 90's in the US, some high schools would have a school directory with all the student's contact information like phone numbers and addresses. At least my high school did.

Happy birthday! In retrospect, there are a lot of ethical problems in this film that weren't really taken seriously back in the 80s when it came out. I think it is a good sign that we've evolved enough to realize that it is problematic today. I was in high school in the 80s and the movie's dialog is not far off from actual teenagers at the time. So...problematic, yes. We just didn't realize it back then. Still, I think it is a good look into that time period and the film is funny, well-made and somewhat romantic. It remains an iconic John Hughes film. Just for the record though, that party was out of hand - even for America. I've never heard of a house party being that big, destructive or insane. Usually, the cops would show up at the first sign that there might be drunken teens, so parties were kept quiet and usually stayed in someone's basement.

I attended many parties that were pretty wild. Lots of folks don't remember (or know) that the drinking age back then was 18. I'd been to many keg parties in high school, it's how our prom committee raised money for prom each year. I've seen a bunch of parties (not in a house, but field, sandbar, etc.) were there were several hundred people, several kegs, a few hundred pounds of crawfish, etc. (especially on senior skip day at the lake... when everybody skipped).

@@shanehebert396 wow pretty wild! We don’t really have such gatherings like that in the uk. Just the pubs and clubs and the odd house gathering… never on such a scale as what was in this movie though! No where near!! 🫨

@@Purdyflexreactionsdepending on your tastes... if you like horror/comedy, American Werewolf in London is great, and set the standard for special effects. If drama/comedy is more for you, Rain Man cleaned up at the Oscars in 1988 and is a great choice. Won Best Picture and established a young Tom Cruise at the time.

That’s what happens when millennials and gen z watch gen x movies. You are to offended by everything to find any comedy in anything. We didn’t take life so seriously back than and we could laugh at things unlike kids today that aren’t happy unless they cancel someone or be offended by something. I suggest lighting up a little. It’s a comedy just relax and go with it. Yes things are different now but I’m sure you know us older folks love these movies. And every generation but yours has a problem with gen z so maybe look at that before you bash of generations. That why so many people just hate the way the world is now. No one knows how to laugh and have fun anymore. Especially kids to worried about oh you can’t say that and oh you can’t do that. Just breathe and learn to have fun and live a little bit. Your generation will be much happier. You guys are so pissed and angry all the time. Why you have it way easier than we did as kids. But I can bet I enjoyed my childhood way more than any of you guys are today.

I guess we just don’t accept things cause people tell us we should. Like you get talked down to cause your lower class, a woman different skin colour it’s “just the way it is”. We have the audacity to say no and stuff and people who didn’t end resent them for speaking up.
@sweetkiss119
@sweetkiss119 2 месяца назад
It’s not about accepting being treating badly. No one should accept that. But some things are a joke and meant to be funny. Sometimes it’s ok to laugh at inappropriate things. It’s why people are so frustrated with your generation. Just relax and have fun. You can laugh at fucked up shit and it’s still ok. I mean come I. Every generation but yours complains about gen z and their hyper sensitivity. Smoke a joint and just have some fun girl. It’s really not that serious lol
@Purdyflexreactions
@Purdyflexreactions 2 месяца назад
@@sweetkiss119 well that’s kind of what I meant about it being a grey area film. Things that happened to you or someone you know that’s affected their entire life isn’t really going to be funny to you is it. So I can accept you enjoyed it 👐 but I can’t pretend I did I’m afraid, apart from the bits that I did find funny of course 💁‍♀️ other than that it worries me a bit cause stuff like that happens. But thanks for commenting your view point. I’m positive you’re not the only one that has this view point 💁‍♀️

@@Purdyflexreactions Yes, growing up in that world was harder. We mostly had divorced parents who both worked and were home by ourselves and had complete freedom. We didn't have school shootings, metal detectors or security guards in our schools. Even the idea of someone coming to our school to shoot us wasn't even a thought back then. If we had problems we couldn't call and bother mommy or daddy at work. We had to figure things out on our own. We had freedom to watch or listen to anything we wanted, so we were exposed to adult situations as young as 9 or 10. Having said that, what our lives were like actually made us educated, well rounded and a much stronger generation. The Covid lockdown was a breeze for us, because we spent our youth alone finding ways to entertain ourselves and we didn't have internet or cell phones back then. Shielding your kids from the real world and overprotecting them only hurts them because when they do become adults, they have a much harder time adjusting to the harsh realities of the real world. Very little scares or offends us because you can't show us almost anything we haven't already seen. We were a live and let live generation and being gay wasn't as bad back then as people say now. I find being gay more hostile now than back then and would gladly go back in time to then if I could. It was a blast. Morals are a perception based on your reality. Just because you think something is immoral doesn't mean it is. Girls and women knew how to handle themselves back then and didn't get as offended as your generation does watching movies like this. My parents had a saying, "Someday you will laugh at this." They were right.

* This movie is proof positive that the 80's were quite cringeworthy, if you go by our perspective today. Whenever I feel like we've made no progress since the 80's, all I have to do is watch a movie like this, and it reassures me that we've come a long ways since the 80's..........a long ways.
