Aluminum foil: multiple uses Trash bags and Ziploc bags: not just trash, but water collection, shelter, ponchos, etc. Blackout thermal curtains: keep the heat and light in. Monofilament and braided fishing line: from sharing to sewing. Screws, nails, hooks, eyebolts: you'll be surprised how many you need when you're fashioning workarounds. Compressed towels/wipes: compact if on the go. ChapStick: but just for lips, it's great for wound care to fire starting.

Stock up on some disposable N95 face masks -- the kind that can fold up and fit inside a zip lock bag and be carried in a coat pocket or handbag -- because you never know if there will be a lot of smoke, dust or asbestos particles in the air after a disaster. Be able to protect your lungs against harmful particles by having some disposable face masks designed to filter out fine particles. And make sure the brand you buy fits you correctly when worn correctly. Have extra sets of head lamps and spare batteries for them if you cannot afford rechargeable headlamps and a solar generator set-up. Wearing a head lamp at night during grid down will help prevent serious injury from tripping and falling. A candle or oil lamp carries with it the potential for a house fire, so head lamps are a lot safer for moving about at night. And they leave your hands free to carry items or perform tasks. Have a spare set of basic grooming tools such as tweezers, nail clips, emery boards, plastic hair combs and a set of barber's non-electric hair-cutting tools. If you wear your hair long, have some spare sets of elastic hair bands or ribbon. One of us learned how to do men's hair cuts during the first year of the pandemic so none of the men in the household had to risk a covid-19 infection from going to a barber shop. Keep some packets of baby wipes or other types of wet wipes in your emergency supplies. They can store for a few years if not opened. You will want these products if water stops flowing from the taps or is contaminated after a disaster. A sponge bath from a few wet wipes is good for moral and helps prevent fungal infections if you cannot take a bath or shower.

I agree. I grabbed a bunch of these last year. I take them with me on work trips and save the heavy-duty ones for my home and car kit. They've held up well. They also have battery-powered lanterns.

Good advice for the short term, long term is a totally different thing. Long term your going to go down to the creek with some sort of soap to wash your body! One of those Solar Shower thingies at your nearest natural water source would be best for washing-up.

Great video for beginners. I’ll forward this to friends, but I had to kinda chuckle…”we all remember….” No…no I don’t 😂🤣😅. I have been preaching this for FREAKIN YEARS!!!! So I was very ready. To the point where a friend of mine sent me a pic of Eastwood, I think in Grand Torino sitting on his porch. It said something like “You know you’re antisocial when there’s a pandemic and nothings changed in your life”. Or something like that. 😂🤣😅. Keep the videos coming. Sooner or later these donuts will get It.

I keep the matches in a zip-lock bags
@lyndasmith8747
@lyndasmith8747 11 месяцев назад
Good advice Hankster. However, I live in the very humid South where moisture can somehow creep into anything over time. In my climate, I have better luck keeping matches dry by storing them in a glass jar with Saran Wrap over the jar mouth and then screwing a metal lid on tightly over that. I also bought a dozen of the long BIC grill and fireplace lighters at Dollar General last summer as a back up for my emergency matches.
@dg6570
@dg6570 10 месяцев назад
I like to dip matches in "Gulf" brand paraffin. I then place them in a small tin box and throw a dessicant pack in with them. We live where it is very humid, so it's been a trial and error to find the best storage.

Always on point, thorough demonstrations, thank you. Might I add, cornstarch (not talc) baby powder, soothing addition for hygiene care, deodorizer, etc.
@lyndasmith8747
@lyndasmith8747 11 месяцев назад
Cornstarch worked for me while gardening last summer to help keep me dry. However, I started to smell a bit yeasty by the end of the day. I tried using Arm & Hammer Baking Soda which did a better job of keeping me fresh. However, the baking soda was scratchy on my skin until I started sifting it just like I would sift flour. I sift a big zip-lock bag of Baking Soda once a week so that it’s always ready. Baking Soda really does a great job of keeping me smelling fresh and not chaffing. Everyone has a slightly different body chemistry so Cornstarch may be perfect for some people, and Baking Soda for others.

"Bleach" sold at stores is very diluted chlorine solution. Why not buy a gallon of "Pool Chlorine" (Comes in yellow square jugs) from a pool supply center as highly concentrated chlorine solution and then make your own "Bleach" by adding a small amount of pool chlorine to a gallon of water.

just me, but how could a bar of soap go bad??? it can't lose it's potency, can't dry out (maybe when old it cracks but it can still be used) it does not expire so i think it is good to go forever (maybe if a nuke hits it directly it wouldn't be good). @@Biscuit66669
