For a school science fair project, a Florida sixth grader studied lionfish and is now being credited with a scientific breakthrough. The research has changed the way these deadly fish are handled. Vicente Arenas reports.
@@RubLox_Live literally. My school had an art competition, I entered (7th grade) and that thing was stupid- like I’m not saying mine was better but they definitely didn’t care abt talent or effort since 1st and 2nd place were below the grade 6th. They could have hade different grade levels?! Not to mention different genres since second was a poem- we didn’t even get our art pieces back they just took them, but we got to take a picture with it to put on their website I guess 🙄
See doesn’t this show you how the education system is... It sure did reassure me. Schools are way below the level of very important subjects.. So you can be the smartest person making so many new discoveries but still fail because it’s not written in the premade books with all the old stuff
i don't remember the broadcaster saying anything like that. i couldve missed it so direct me to where they said that or something hinting at that. im pretty sure they were just doing a report on a smart kid who is credited for a scientific breakthrough
@@tqas3466 Dude, you said it yourself. "what does gender have to with anything"? That's were he is getting at. Why do you need to say "WoMen In ScIeNcE"? What difference does it make that a women discovered something new about science than a man?
Alright, let's see, if this was NOT a verified commentator, and it was just a normal person commenting this. Chances are the comment would have no likes. Like I'm not saying this is a bad comment, it's just not funny. But since this IS a verified comment, expect your likes to skyrocket bud.
The most important part of science is asking the right questions. She managed to ask a question no one else had thought to ask. Curiosity is vital for innovation to happen.
“Lion fish can survive in freshwater and are most definitely going to threaten more ecosystems if they become invasive and here’s the proof” ✨Third Place✨
Definitely didnt no school caees wether you mad a "breakthrough" that no one will ever use or care about plus either her dad mad this or gave her the equipment and the idea
@@TooReelFishing hate to break it to you. But they do care. Big or small...her dads help or without her dads help...what she did matters. Science isn’t about getting immediate results. It’s trial and error. Sometimes you move one step closer...sometimes you moves 3 steps back. At her age, I think what she did was great. Yes her dad is a marine biologist, but he was a tool for her to learn. Which is what your professors are there for. But the girl used those tools and teachings and discovered something.
The fact that she was able to study a live animal at all is shocking. When I was in middle school that wasn’t allowed, and in high school you had to go through all kinds of paperwork and approvals, so no one ever wanted to involve living creatures of any kind. She’s going far in life!
Yes! She was given the opportunity to work with animals and study them. If more children were able to have that access, I bet modern day society would have a lot more to contribute to our beautiful planet. People LOVE to misunderstand the capability of children.
Her "breakthrough" wasn't that big a deal. If an adult had done it, it would've gotten no media coverage. If anything, this story is evidence that schools need more funding for project equipment, since ALL kids are naturally curious and will ask questions and search for answers as far as they can go. Unfortunately, most kids have nowhere near the amount of money this kid's parents spent on all those aquariums and equipment for her project.
@@edstimator1 they never said that, their point is that children have a lot more curiosity so if more kids were given the right equipment then a lot more discoveries like this could be made since kids think in a way adults don’t.
@@averyboccella2390 The reason why they find this important is because lionfish have become invasive globally with no natural predators. And with an appetite of a Labrador.
@@cpeterseb3161 I am sorry for your loss but it is delusional to think capitalists have incentives to not advance science. Let's recall they were responsible for implementing each scientific revolution in the last 300 years. If a discovery is made, they will use it.
And this is how great scientists start their journey; discover something that doesn’t look right and then do whatever it takes to document the results so others can use or build on that research to develop a solution to mitigate the problem, or to find a resolution good or bad. Way to go Lauren...
Her dad is a marine biologist. Is this really her discovery if he taught her all the techniques, provided her the resources, told her what to measure, and what to modulate? On the other hand, this is the incredible thing about science. Even young children (6th grade is fairly mature I will admit) can discover reality-shaping data. With the right resources and mentorship children can genuinely and directly contribute to the body of scientific knowledge and possibly to the body of scientific literature.
@@gabe8168 yeah and that shows that no one had the intuition to try it except her. That’s all science is man it’s not inventing a new system every single time, most science is built brick by brick by people using those same processes. It’s not an insane breakthrough but it is an application of the scientific process that brought awareness to what is now a huge problem, so he’s right, he doesn’t have any right to be patronizing her.
What a coincidence. Her dads a marine biologist. No wonder why her tank set up was so complicated. Edit: I truly hate to make negative comments towards a little girl honestly and I truly hope she doesn’t see it however I still firmly agree with what I initially commented
Yeah it helps when u have all the gear. Poor kids could also have acheived this but don't have one tank set up for Marine Life let alone 4-5 and by the way Marine tank setups are more expensive than fresh water.
@@unorthdoxcleric6953 lol i was just about to comment how amazing the research gear is compared to school standards in my country xD (germany) ... so you're saying this is by no means school equipment standard in the USA than?
"I love that she has braces and is being credited with a scientific breakthrough".....am I missing something? Da fuq her braces have to do with anything? These adults on TV make my head hurt. The anchor have braces? Soooooooooooo what
I know, when I got braces, the orthodontist told me she had 28 year old patient before me. She went on to say it wasn't that uncommon for adults to have braces.
IKR and the other went like "women and science." Like what????? I know gender equality and representation in science is a bit skewed but defining her achievement because she's a female is very degrading to the work she had accomplished.
@@neurofiedyamato8763 yea I know gender equality and representation is terrible for men in the nursing field, and blah blah blah. Sorry that's all I heard
I think he was referring that mostly kids have braces, so it’s cool that a young person who still has braces is already making scientific discoveries. It does sound very stupid though.
some kid: invents a cure to everything school: "2, take it or leave it" another kid: invents time travel school: "2 and 3rd place is taken already so your 2 and a half" some kid: baking soda volcano school: -10 place
Think it was just another way of crediting her for being so young to achieve something like this since braces are typically something people get as a child.
@@emilytustin4540 Don't know about it being freaky '_' but it was surely cringeworthy. "Love how she has she braces and is being credited with a scientific breakthrough. " The statement makes zero sense
This family is everywhere on RU-vid and FWC. Clearly dedicated to Florida’s resources which as a Floridian I greatly appreciate. They are a very knowledgeable family and very well known in the FL community….just hope her accomplishments aren’t overshadowed by the family name. Clearly a smart kid following in her dad’s footsteps of marine science/biology.
I can see English isn't for everyone, it's a figure of speech, the braces is used to represent her age, so she's basically saying, despite being young she's doing serious adult science. Cane, Baby strollers, Braces Can all be used to represent the various age groups that use them. So if a headline says " despite his stroller he achieved first place" you know it's most likely a child, this man's cane didn't prevent him from gold medal" you know it's most likely an elderly man. You guys speak English but don't know anything about it. Go study literature in English or English literature whatever it is called in your part of the world.
Gotta love the media!! smh They shouldve been applauding her accomplishment, not "Wow! cant believe a female with braces could discover such a breakthrough!" as if either of those are any kind of obstacle. talk about demeaning
@Sand Hanitizer probably should have just said that then, it's not like only children/young people can have braces. More common yes but not restricted to young people
Smarter than the reporters on the topic for sure, it's not their field. Smarter than the other research biologists who are college educated and have professional experience? Nigh Impossible.
@@xenocide1307 what are you talking about. I’m pretty sure he’s just trying to say the reporters are probably dumber than the girl, in general knowledge.
@@FakeAre Which also seems unlikely. At the time this was made she was a 6th grader. Do you remember how much less intelligent you were then compared to adulthood? We have some weird obsession in our culture with propping up kids who achieve like they are smarter than all the adults around them. They achieved with the help of those same adults around them...
While it helps to have a dad who's a marine biologist, the credit goes to Lauren for noticing the fish where they weren't supposed to be, being curious, asking the question, following up to find the answer. Kid's got a great future ahead of her!!
Girl: Finds a way to make a break through on one of the worlds strangest fish. And is like a genius The kid who made a volcano : You dare oppose me mortal
I don't think that's enough to consider her a genius, although she certainly knows what she's doing with science. She's in college now, I'm pretty sure.
How am I just now reading about this. 😳 Wow..I'm so impressed at her knowledge and dang proud of her. Like so many others in this thread have noted..I'm sure she should have won 1st place in that competition. They don't even mention the 1st or 2nd place winners. I guess the judges weren't smart enough to figure that out..😉 Well done young lady...best of the best to you and your loved ones. Bravo!
@@jmc4791 bro what? its very clear that she did this on her own. it was a new discovery, her father couldn’t have just been like “ive got an idea” i swear people just tryna find reasons to discredit her
@@jmc4791 If it was her idea then there was no reason for her to stop, it was just lower the salt levels in the water, something she could’ve done. It’s either her dad did it entirely or while he gave her the equipment, she did all the work. You literally have a playlist titled Kids can surprise, why is this any different
Well now she can steal ideas in Columbia, literally “Zack Jud, a marine biologist who published very similar results in 2011, says the recent news surprised him because his years of work leading to similar findings are being ignored.” (USA today)
"Women in science." So... The fact that she's a girl is more impressive than her being a kid? Wow, adult women must have some serious competition right there.
... where'd you get that from? i didn't get that at all from the video... She's a very smart dedicated scientist. Her gender has nothing to do with it.
@@pineconeidiot8046 oh irght, it occured to me after writing that it was probably a reporter. I never watch the start or end reporters speeches. @@leiajiang7877 you can go to any pet store and get a gauge to measure salinity. All you have to do to drop salinity is add fresh water. Not that hard.

@@zzzxxzzz3248 Sorry, *its not true at all* . I just wrote that to show people that research is a very important thing, and although something on the internet can be presented well, you cannot go by "packaging" alone, or in this case, a simple, unsupported statement... Accurate information is, in many cases, not easy to come by. I didn't mean to add to anybody's disinformation, just show that the scientific process, if not done multiple times by different parties to validate results, is an easy forgery.
"Real scientists took your data" homie shes a scientist too. They diminished this girl in so many ways. Lots of salt water fish can breath in fresh water, but not many fresh water can breath in salt. I'm surprised this wasnt tested earlier.
It wasnt about the adaptability of the Lion fish but instead to understand its voracious appetite was not specific exclusively in salt water but startling and unfortunstely invasive to fresh water fish as well and that is a serious problem as these fish have begun to multiply at an alarming rate.
@@tamarakennedy4976 they've been an invasive species for years. Ive built a few fish tanks and worked with people who have lionfish. They eat anything and everything. They're aggressive towards other fish 99% of the time. My point is that this knowledge was apparently not spread to the people that needed it most and that kinda blows my mind.
That is not a breakthrough. She didn’t find a solution for a problem and or solved a mystery. She made a scientific discovery adding some new knowledge. That’s an important difference.
"PHd scientists took the data" Now when she goes to get her PHd she's going to have to make a new breakthrough...seems wrong to me...this better count (I know she is credited in the papers)
