Take a look at these four massive lever guns, acquired by Murphy’s.
In this video, we compare the power of the following:
* 45-70
* 450 Marlin
* 500 S&W
* 50 Alaskan
From the Hollywood classic Marlin 1895 45-70 to the raw power of the Turnbull Thumper in 50 Alaskan.
We also highlight the longest produced firearm in history, the Winchester 94 in 450 Marlin, and a lever gun made specifically to handle the 500 Smith and Wesson, Big Horn Armory’s Model 89 Spike Driver!
All data was collected using the LabRadar.
Murphy’s Guns, located in Tucson, AZ is the number one gunshop in Southern Arizona.
We regularly acquire a wide collection of rare and unique firearms and we carry the largest selection of modern, classic, and hard to get guns.

I shoot a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in .450 Marlin. My ammo is the LeverEvolution 325 gr.. I also have the large loop lever, but I use a ghost ring site. I hunt in heavy cover and swamps in northern Maine. The gun is a beast. When you hit something it goes down, love that gun.

I see you left out the Winchester 1886 which is capable of shooting the biggest lever gun cartridge ever made, the 50/110. I have two 1886s, one in 45/100 and another in 50/110. Loaded with the right powder and bullet they can reach speeds upwards of 2500fps and 3000ft/lb of muzzle energy, a bit more if you take it to the limit, which I have never done.
@craigsellier5973

That 50-110 is fixing to have some stout competition. It's out in the BFR Revolver it's called the 500 Bushwhacker and the beast of all handguns and BFR Magnum Research is talking to Big Horn Armory seeing if they will make a lever action rifle for the round. BHR makes the 500 S&W Spike Driver now hopefully they will make one so I can purchase one. I'd love to have one like yours that 50-110 that's everyone's Holy Grail rifle. You are fortunate enough to own two holy grail guns the 50-110 and 45-100. You ever need anyone to take them off of your hands ✋️ I'm down.

The .450 Marlin casing is derived from the .458 Winchester magnum, no sourcing from the .45-70 Gov't casing. The Winchester 1886 platform was once chambered for .50-110 Win. You can still get brass from Starline for .50-110 and barrels made to adapt to the current production 1886 in .45-90. With a well developed load from .50-110 in smokeless powder, you can achieve .458 Lott power. Even up to 6400 ft-lb.

The .450 Alaskan was developed on the Winchester Model 1886 and later the model 71 rifles by Harold Johnson of Cooper Landing, AK. Johnson later sold his gunsmithing business to William Fuller. Fuller developed the .50 Alaskan. The .450 Alaskan rifles built by Johnson were called Johnson Kenai Rifles. They used Buhmiller barrels.

You really need to handload the 500 S&W to make a fair comparison. Nobody factory loads the 500 S&W to anywhere near it's full potential because it would be to difficult to extract several spent cases at once fro a double action revolver. Loaded to it's potential it matches the 50-120 from the model 89.

All of these lever guns on the table are weak and short-range cartridges that lose energy very quietly. As an Alaskan Hunting guide since 1989 rarely have I seen a 45-70 being used in Alaska because for large and dangerous bears there is far superior rifle cartridges to be used when your life is on the line against large bears that mean to kill you. I have been using a Winchester Mod - 70 in 338 win mag loaded with 225 grain Barns TSX bullets and a CZ 550 in 9.3x62 Mauser loaded with the 286 grain Barns TSX bullets to match the commercial loads of the 375 H&H magnum. My next hunts I will be using my AR 10 I have chambered a Pac Nor super match barrel in 375 - 300 WSM so I am able to get semi auto rifle in the magnum 375 - 300 WSM cartridge for fast cycling of all cartridges when speed is a must have. I build to sell AR 10 uppers in all of the commercial WSM cartridges and in WSM wildcat cartridges. The largest is a 458 WSM AR 10 upper.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket Год назад
@@lurebenson7722 I don't doubt what you say. However, the .45-70 is no pushover and with correct loads (the key), it's about as good as anything and as handy as anything up close for bear defense (not as a main hunting choice). There are .458 diameter bullets for the .45-70 that penetrate beyond belief and you don't need to spit a piece of lead at the speed of light to get the job done. No bear can run faster than even a .22 short rimfire. Crushing tissue, deep penetration, and a decent sized hole is all that is necessary to get the job done on any animal, regardless of how fearful and imposing that animal is. There's bigger and badder cartridges yes, but get something loaded stoutly and .45-70 will penetrate through large sized maple trees. Besides, large high pressure magnums aren't something a lot of people can handle, shoot well, and achieve the sort of followup-shots like a lever action can deliver. Semi-autos take some tuning to function correctly and they are prone to difficulties. .338 magnums, the .375 H&H, even some speedy .30 cal stuff is fine. But a .458 sized hole and a 500gr hunk of crushing hardcast lead isn't going to stop at a couple of bones.

@@exothermal.sprocket You believe you know far more than I do, and you believe these cheap crap lead bullets are some kinds of never fail Mirical bullets far superior to the Barns TSX bullets of Hornaday GMX and CX and now all the other brains of copper expanding bullets? More of how you show your own ignorance and personal experiences of life experiences with guns - ammo- bullets when you talk this BS auto loaders are inferiors to lever guns and the refer to auto loaders jam. I build to sell to shops in Anchorage Alaska the specialized AR 10 uppers in dangerous game wildcat cartridge 358 WSM and a 375 -300 WSM then a large bore 458 WSM with these uppers never fail. The 375 - 300 WSM pushes a 300 grain bullets at 3600 feet per second and both the 375 - 300 WSM and 458 WSM I am sure can do 5000 Foot pound of energy which am sure like all the rest of the teenager RU-vid groupies you believe the 45-70 has more power than a 50 BMG or more power than a 30 mm auto cannon in the noise of the A-10. I have had dumb asses tell me it can't be done to have the AR 10 chambered for WSM cartridges then want to argue with me even when a company Arsenal decent building and selling AR 10 finished rifles have RU-vid videos on these WSM chambered AR 10 rifles or KAK Industries sells AR 10 rifles in 300 WSM. If I asked you to show how a 358 WSM - 375 - 300 WSM - 458 WSM cartridges are made you couldn't begin to say how even the cartridges are made. But you want to talk crap how powerful the 45-70 is and lead bullets are superior to today's copper expanding bullets Because of your own RU-vid brain washed BS. Let's have a photo's sharing to show you knows more? 50 Alaskan is undervalued too much. It is an ammo that should be a priority for the major players to produce. Also, the 450 Marlin is superior to the 45-70 in that the rim is belted, so it can be used in bolt action, etc. Therefore, it is superior to the 45-70 in terms of warhead convenience. Therefore, the convenience of the warhead is superior to that of the 45-70, so in a sense, it is a superior warhead, but if it had been introduced half a century earlier, it would have been dominant...
