In this video, I compare the 444 Marlin vs. 45-70 Govt to see once and for all who the winner is. Covey makes a guest appearance and longs to chase birds while I compare these cartridges.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I ordered an 1895 in 45-70 and received a 444 with a serial number that belongs to a 45-70 according to Marlin / Remington, when I called them about this in 2012. I kept the rifle and cut the barrel, by a gunsmith, to 16". I like the 444 just as much as a 45-70. Great review.

Thanks Ron and Covey. I have a single shot H&R Handy Rifle in the Rem 444 and then I have my new Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70. I enjoy both. It is just a little harder to find the 444 ammo on the shelves locally. I just harvest a boar hog the other evening with the 45-70. It fell where it was standing when I pulled the trigger. That big 45 really did the job. Again, thanks for sharing the information on these two cartridges.
@nokoolaid
@nokoolaid Год назад
Handloading is a good idea with the 444 for a couple reasons. One, more performance. Like a lot of factory loads, they underperform stated velocities. The other is economy and also tailoring for accuracy too. Cases usually last 20-25 loadings. It's a shame Hornady discontinued the 265g FP. It worked very well.

My uncle had a dog like that named Snipe (a dignified animal with human intelligence). Back in those days dogs weren’t chained or fenced. Every day around 11:15, Snipe would make the walk from his house, to our house where he would sit on the back porch. A little treat, say hello observe the goings on. When we sat down to lunch back home he would go. Never deviate from his course or his time. People still talk about that dog.

Thanks for another informative video! I appreciate your hard work and your KNOWLEDGE. I am a big fan of the 45-70. I have read hunting articles of the 45-70 handling Cape Buffalo using Buffalo Bore Ammunition. It is not a long range cartridge , however, within 150 yards it will handle all big game . If I were in Grizzly country, it would be my long rifle of choice. God bless!
@Grodd70
@Grodd70 Год назад
Love both, I'd add in the .375 Winchester and the .405 Win. The versatility of the .45/70 is you can load down to cowboy action loads and go all the way up to Buffalo Bore or Garretts or anything in between. That was the problem I saw with the .450 Marlin is that your stuck at a .45/70 hot load ballistics unless you re-load. Long live lever guns

Straight wall cartridges will be legal in Illinois for the 2023 whitetail season. I recently purchased a .444 Marlin in the CVA Scout V2. I have been playing around with it for a couple months. GREAT little rifle: accurate, very good trigger & absolutely bombproof. This is my first “big bore” rifle. I gotta say, I am really liking the .444 Marlin cartridge. It will be MUCH improved from a slug gun.

A while back, some southern states started allowing .444M and .45-70 single shot, exposed hammer, breech loading rifles for "primitive weapons" season for deer. They've since relaxed it a bit to be any .35cal or larger cartridge in a single shot, exposed hammer, breech loading rifle. That was a big reason for the uptick in .444M, .45-70, and .35 Whelen. Since they slow walked the regulations down to .35cal, some folks just stuck with the .444M or .45-70 they already had. My uncle hunts with a .444M and he loves it... even using it during regular season, now, most of the time. His is very accurate with the 265gr LEVERevolutions that you showed in your video and he has taken deer with it at 200yds without hesitation.

If you want a powerful caliber that doesn't need to be reloaded (but also responds well to reloading, especially with heavier projectiles), the .450 will serve you well.

I have an h&r handi-rifle in 444 Remington she kicks a little hard but she hits hard to. It's an excellent 150 yd deer or hog rifle.

They have 44 mag flex tips available. Leverrevolution

And they are absoultely garbage. Hornadys own 240 grain XTP is .205 B.C and 200 grain XTP is .170 and the almighty FTX 225? .145! You can't even reload with the brass with anything else since they cut it short to put the flex tip in.

Love the 444, using it in a Savage Model 10 and a Savage Striker bolt action hand gun (both custom builds) and a CVA Hunter. Great medicine on whitetails with a 300gr Hornady XTP. That is a great looking puppy pal you got there too.

Own a 1895 myself hadn't hunted with it since 2017, not sure why. So anyway a lady I know wanted some deer meat this year and on the last day I went and about 10 in the morning 8-9 doe's showed up, well I ran that lever like I'd been doing it my whole life, it was natural it was fast and effective and I really surprised myself how I dropped one at 140 and another 110 and one at 90+ and they we're all spread out probably 80 to 100 yard's between all of them. All I can say is if you don't own one get one , theirs just something special about an 1895. One day if I'm lucky I'll beach hunt Kodiak island, hopefully I'll run it flawless that day too😳

Now that is a man with supreme good taste in bird dogs! Nothing like a Ryman type English Setter! Majestic supreme bird finding machines. Affectionate cuddle dogs in the off season. No other bird dog is as supremely beautiful!

45-70 is my favorite cartridge. Been thinking about getting a fourth rifle chambered for that cartridge. I sure like that Marlin stainless lever action guide rifle. I just got to figure out a way to tell the wife! Lol

My two best lifetime friends argue about this constantly. One owns .444 the other a 45.70. It gets quite intense and funny listening to them get after it.

I share all these videos with them. Case in point…. I just received a text from the 45-70 fan. His response is “Buffalo killer vs. Bear wounder, no comparison”. Hahaha always entertaining!

And here is the response from the other one! “All hail the mighty king of the big bores.. the .444. Strong enough to roll a 400 pound bear from a poorly placed shot, yet accurate enough to drop a moose through tall timbers. All hail ,dA da da daaaaaaa”

I have a Marlin model 444 (built in '79), and 2 rifles chambered in 44 Rem Mag (Ruger 77/44 bolt action, and Marlin model 94). All 3 are excellent, and fun to shoot. They make big holes in wild hogs, for sure! I like the 225 Grain LeverEvolution shells in the 44 mag, and the 265 grain LeverEvolution in the 444.
