Skarner actually had another version before the one you mention as his first kit! His empowered Q used to slow, the attack speed was on the W and his E put a mark on enemies that would heal Skarner when consumed, The version you mention as the original Skarner didn't exist until patch 4.2, years after his original release

Yeah kinda disappointed he didn't touch on OG og skarner. Thats the version I played. Back then he was like a heal/drain bruiser/tank. Back when you could stack warmogs and build madred's bloodrazor on him and maybe a force of nature for good measure.

Hey, Skarner Main here. I am one of the mains who is actually excited for his rework, and I am quite open with it. But I do have one think I really want for this VGU: Riot should listen to us Mains!!!! That's the most important thing for me, since the majority of Skarner player is either a Main or a One-Trick. The fact that it's going to be a large VGU also makes communication a lot more important. My message for Riot is to listen to us Mains, so you won't alienate us like you did with Aatrox. Otherwise, thanks for this video Vars :)

Skarner is my tryhard champ in ranked. His biggest problem is his passive spires. They are very powerful…in certain places. When you are behind and enemy can control most of them its hard to come back. IMO if they can redistribute that power somehow to be more consistent with a lower ceiling it would probably make him 100% more popular. But I like that he’s not popular so I can play him when I want. :)

@@johnnyw4life Yeah I'd happily get rid of the spires. They were the thing that made me drop him entirely because he already struggled with closing out games, and they did nothing to help with that while making him even more inconsistent. I've never had an issue with him being sustained damage because to me the issue was making that consistently work, not that it was a playstyle in the first place. It fit with most tanks and melee of that era the problem back then was a lack of appropriate tools. We have better ways to make it work now. What I'd want on him is some long duration form of Grounded (probably on his E, maybe extend the duration with auto attacks but not Q so he has to commit to one target), a weak but persistent slow (On his Q, so he doesn't have to itemize for it), and to make Crystal Venom his actual passive (let him pick how it stuns, Q as a consistent mini AoE stun, auto or E for a good single/first target stun), so that once he's on you he's gonna stick, and he can make sure he does with good E and passive management. Since he can apply most of that CC pressure in an AoE zone on top of him he becomes an anti-mobility front line threat, which mostly affects divers and skirmishers (and to a lesser extent tanks). To me that's a perfect niche for him since it can be played in jungle or top just fine and he always functioned well as peel or as a split-push threat prior to the rework. Ranged champs have never had a problem with him even when he's fed, and all this would change in that regard is making his pick potential even scarier than it was without necessarily making it more consistent. Which is good. He should eat melee champions alive if they can't bust him up.

@@GrimoireM i honestly think if you remove his spires and just increase his base movespeed and aspd slightly (esp mspd) his kit is perfectly fine as is. Adding a grounded effect would make him overpowered i think. The only other change I might suggest would be allowing his W mspd steroid to persist after his shield breaks. Either that or allow it to break current slows like garen Q.

@@fungithis1253 an interesting idea, but how would you control it? Also the entire mechanic only works if you have map control, and this suggestion doesn’t fix that inconsistency.

As much as I love playing Skarner (god the movement speed build is so fun) he just has so many flaws that really make it hard to keep playing him consistently. And to think he used to be a lot worse...

His gameplay is just all over the place. His q is meant for longer skirmishes how ever the rest of his kit is rather short lasting and has alot of cooldown. He does need to get really close to you however once he reaches his destination he makes a u-turn and leaves the frontline because of his ult mechanics. Thats just bad champion design if you have to abandon your gameplay direction because your ult gives you a completely different objective. I really hope they pick a direction and unify all of his abilities into this one direction (like "long fighting Skarner" with sustained damage and peel, or in and out "stun their most vital target Skarner" where he gets extra mobility tools so he can be more effective with ultimate.)

@@phoenixflamegames1 eh, i only liked the champ for the Q spamming with try force and 1v9ing, did find decent amounts of fun playing him tank back in season 10, but ever sinse the mythic update iv struggled to really enjoy the champ with his meta build, it really feels like playing a support rather than a juggernaut

Fun fact: Skarner still holds the highest win rate of all time. Going through all the data Skarner once held an average win rate in solo queue around 65% across 30 days

That win rate was possible only by dedicated players. The average playerbase didn't sink that win rate down. That's why it's important to talk about playrates on top of winrates.

@@DJAizakku this was right after the juggernaut update, where skarner was overstatted to all hell and they had to nerf him to the ground, his playrate went up at this time as well because of how strong he was, it wasn't the already dedicated skarner players as this was just after a rework of the champion where he (along with the other 3 juggernauts) was pick or ban every single game

@@brendan8114 I'm aware of the timing, but that makes it awfully hilarious that his playrate still never exceed 1%. It was still his usual playbase was definitely the one contributing to the winrate. I remember that tierlist and analytic channels were constantly begging the players to play the scorpion during this time but the league playerbase didn't budge. Even tabloids sites made an article about the winrate too.

skarner was never a failure in my eyes. i always found a way to have fun with him whether it was tanky that took advantage of mispositioning, a chainsaw with q spam, or a stun lock fiend with constant stuns abusing his e.

@@Betroid its actually funny that you mention ranks. While I just play for fun and stay out of ranked, the stun fiend build was created by the only master learner player at the time. So uh, is this when I say git rekt scrub?

as someone who has almost 400k mastery on skarner, this is what I want to see in the rework. make him a juggernaut that sacrifices some of the insane damage that other juggernauts have for cc and movement speed. I want a kit that sets up a clear condition to stun a single target for up to 5 secs if comboed correctly while dealing at least 75% of their health during that time. maybe keep something similar to his current E in the kit so that you need to land a skillshot as well as get in melee range to reach max lock-down and damage potential on a target. I'm worried that Riot will focus in on Skarner being a CC Tank because that's how he's been played in pro play, but his damaging fighter aspects are what make in so fun to play! if I want a CC tank i'll play sejuani or zac. I want Skarner to be THE CC Juggernaut, just like how Ashe is THE CC Marksmen

5s cc and 75% health damage isn't enough, I think he should do the damage as true damage, as AOE and to his own teammates. Also, don't forget that this is only his q, his ult freezes everyone's game for 5min.

5 seconds is too long, not because it would be overpowered, but because it's unnecessary and the power trade off for hard CC that lasts that long would be immense. Even 3 seconds is pretty nuts in LoL.

Lot of Skarner appreciation in the comments. This is why he’s the way he is to be fair. Back when Riot was beginning to do these large scale updates, they wanted to do one for Skarner, but the community had strong opinions about leaving his abilities similar. It was at this time that they were being much more collaborative with the community, and the discussions about his direction were being had directly between the Riot employee working on him and the community. The two major points they highlighted were “Keep his Q the same AoE and spammy” and “Don’t touch his ult” and they were conflicted about this since it limited what his changes could be. The second time around for a rework they had more liberty to mess with his abilities, but not enough resources to give him a full rework + visual update. The result was actually a viable and strong Skarner that quickly fell out of favor. Personally, I think that if Aatrox rework is on one side of the coin, Skarner reworks are on the other. Riot should have definitely trusted themselves to make a better decision for Skarners character than the community. The same thing happened with Rengar and his ult indicator. The first time around people did NOT want any changes to Rengar ult. The rioter had to fight for the ult indicator and essentially put his foot down to get that change through. It ultimately ended with the camouflage version we are familiar with, and is honestly much less bs than it was before. Definitely wouldn’t have flown first go around though, the community made that clear. Hopefully now Riot takes the “Rengar” approach with Skarners kit, and not the Aatrox approach. They need the liberty to take power out his ult by making it more conditional, thus allowing the rest of his kit to be able to stand out.

What they need to keep is his E and ult. The E is a necessary tool for the ult. You E someone, ult them, then proc E so they cant run. They got QSS? You E, proc it first to try and bait QSS then ult.

@@phoenixflamegames1 they mentioned really liking the W from original Skarner, so it’s sorta what we have today still (some number changed to the speed). I’d be surprised if they removed it entirely. I’m guessing a rework would touch up his passive, rework his Q, adjust his other two abilities slightly, and make his ult more conditional, like Yasuo/Samira ults. If they want a spammy Q, have his passive be a stacking “crystallization” system that is required to use his ult. Maybe max 5 stacks, at 3 stacks he can stun with an auto, his E could apply 3 stacks immediately (so it retains its current functionality), and his ult could have increased duration with each stack, requiring only 1 to be used. It could be nerfed at 1 stack (cause honestly suppressed kidnapping is op), same at stack 3 (you can still play the mind games if it’s just paired with an extra q to reapply crystal stacks for ult), and buffed at stack 5 (longer duration or faster MS for each stack I guess). Pretty sure this isn’t an original idea, but I thought it fit. And yes it resembles one of his old passives, that’s on purpose.

As a Skarner main, if they keep his E I will be very happy. It has a ton of depth and is much more interesting than it first looks. Q and W are fun in their own ways, but let's be real they're hopelessly simple and outdated.

which is what makes them so fun, his q was built from a bygone era meaning it is horribly balanced for todays league, MEANING you can buy demonic-sunderer and always be dealing huge damage all the time, then you can go tank after, do huge damage with q mashes, be super beefy cause of AP and HP scalings on w working well off demonic, AND be too fast to catch cause of w speed AND have too much cc to fight (unless they are super fed or have the right champ like akali or yasuo or something)

skarner isn't a bad champion. he has probably the best single target lockdown in the game with his e-r-aa-e-aa combo, and most of all he's fun when it goes well. the issue is that when it doesn't go well he is MISERABLE to play. getting in range to use your cc has become harder and harder with the direction the game is going, so if you dont get the tankiness you need you just end up running it down. The best way to fix this is to give him some kind of mobility option, preferably similar to rek'sai. rek'sai's tunnels are clunky and high cd, but long range. this creates a dynamic where you can engage with relative ease, but not dash around like fiora.

For me, Skarner was a champ which you can't get out of your face anymore once he got you. Almost noone could get away from skarner (especially with the old frozen fist), you had to fight him or get him to run away (team showing up/ reaching the tower). They took that from him in the second rework. I want that back :(

Skarner just needs more control of where his spires are. I think they should move it back to an ability that acts like a mix of Trundle's Frozen Domain and Kindred's passive. He could place it anywhere on the map, effective prepping or threatening a gank or invade. After a duration enemies can destroy it by standing on it like they currently do.

Make him able to ult the current ones, cut the cooldown in half if he uses in the cristals and the ult last till he decides to let the cristal, make the effects stack

The crystal spires cover a lot of ground. Like 80% of the jungles and rivers are covered by them. I'm happy with it.

Would be cool if he had a dash somewhere, kinda like rek'sai, it would be very on theme Some sort of bleed or poison that damaged over time? Like, he's a scorpion. Lol. Maybe even reduce healing Other than that, I just hope he doesn't feel so clunky to play

Zeri-esque change where his E or something can be a projectile that works like Fracture on live, *but* can also hit terrain and form a tunnel to burrow through. Making him into a more tank version of Talon that maintains high DPS in long fights for jungle clearing.

I disagree with reworking champions based on winrates. His play style is so unique and isn’t outdated at all. Just give him a few buffs. There’s a minority who do like him the way he is. Once reworked he’ll end up like Morde/Urgot who had dedicated mains but now are only used as FoTM picks.

I will miss the attack & move -speed from his spires. Outside of the jungle they are pretty useless obviously, but damn, i will never forget my Sanguine Blade Skarner games. 2.5 AS around 10 minutes was a blast to play with.

I don't think Skarner is Riot's biggest failure 🤔 i see Ivern a lot less than i see Skarner to be honnest. But hey, all opinions are okay i guess.

i wouldn’t say that ivern’s a failure by design. ivern just happens to be in *arguably* the most boring class in the most competitive position/role, and the player base is not really interested or not ready to embrace that that kind of play style in the jungle exists.

@@oftheseventhlayer It kind of sucks how degraded the support role is now compared to it's ancestor moba, Dota Allstars, where the supports were absolute monsters in that game due to the lack of magic damage scaling so they were just mid laners that were at a lower level due to them roaming and overall carrying the team for the first 30 minutes so it makes me upset seeing supports being a really boring role that do 2 things and if they do it well then they win. (idk about Dota 2 so I'll leave it at that)

As much as I love Skarner I agree he really needs an overhaul. His versatility is great but his passive is the biggest flaw in his kit since you get no use out of it a majority of the game even with good spire control. I think him being a disruption tank would be a great idea since that’s what he’s known for best these days which would also help riot focus on a clear kit to base around his ult. That being said Sion is one of my favorite champions so I trust a rework of his level on Skarner and I’m just excited he’s finally getting love.

Passive: applies a poison on hit stacking up to three times Q: his next auto attack hits twice, both applying passive stacks and reducing cd (of Q) if already at max stacks by second hit W: shield that also creates a slowing aoe E: speed boost that removes negative effects, if used while shielded drops shield and grants ad, can be used while cc'ed R: massive sting that stuns for 1,2,3 seconds depending on stacks and causes immediate damage depending on stacks

I love Necrit's idea for making his passive like bard's meeps where there are hex-crystals scattered around the map and the more he collects, the more magic he gets. Beside that, I'd love if they allowed for two playstyles with him by keeping his speedy tankiness so now you could go for a tanky tempo jungler or a magic dmg assassin

I think aslong as they keep the relative feel and ultimate it should be a good rework. I like the idea of spires but it needs to be more significant and honestly I have a feeling that if they made him more of a specialist juggernaut he would thrive. If he stayed in the jungle and went to spires for example to collect them for either temporary vision, buffs on skarner or heck even like a stacking mechanic because he's "reclaiming crystals" for himself and his people or something... XD even make it so if seraphine is on the enemy team she takes the crystals and gets slight buffs kinda like the soul event with senna lucian and thresh n such. Obviously mainly for flavor and such but like you said keeping an open mind is the most important thing with something like this and honestly I've always thought skarner was cool and wanted to play him but it always felt there was a better option so I never did buy him, so I hope this rework really makes him a champ people want to play more because I think his design is severely outdated but I love our little scorpion friend

My main in the jungle for a few years now, I really liked his kit. But I'm also excited for the rework and I hope he'll stay in the jungle.

I'm no game designer, but I just came up with a possible(ish) way to rework him: P: Keep the pillars but completely rework them. The buffs/range/duration are heavily reduced. He can teleport between pillars (similar to hextech gates) on a 60-120 seconds cooldown based on distance between the pillars. Temporary pillars can be placed at set durations (camps/jungle entrances/destroyed towers etc.) on a 240~180(?) seconds cooldown, lasting for 90~120 seconds and function exactly like normal pillars except for the teleport. He can also put pillars in steroid mode to give nearby allies a ms/tenacity boost for 5 seconds (75 seconds cd). These abilities can possibly be implemented through something similar to gp's upgrade ui. These are intended to make him zone control/macro based while also allowing great tempo/flanking ability through the teleport (might need to lower that cd a bit tho). Q: Move E to Q. Nerf it a bit but make it spammable and applies a mark to enemies hit. After every cast, his next auto is enhanced to attack around him, decreasing all enemies' attack speed (stackable?), dealing bonus damage and reducing W and E cd by 0.25 secs if a target is hit (0.4 if it's a champion + 0.1 for every additional champion). If only 1 target is hit, they take even more damage and the cooldown of Q's mark is reduced by 0.5 secs. This would be his main source of damage while also giving a considerable debuff (slow/as decrease). The extra damage on single target allows him to have both aoe pressure and enough power to duel without being a full on juggernaut. W: A huge ms steroid that's also a shield that can be detonated on recast/being destroyed/end of duration. The explosion has large range, deals very low damage, slows all enemies and mark them. This is his main gap closer. The slow also helps in teamfights. The shield doesn't really do much except for being similar to the old W plus having an explosion out of nowhere would look weird. I guess it also adds some potential for low HP plays if you can calculate the cd. E: Sweeps forward with his tail. Enemies on the edge are silenced for 0.5~0.75 secs. Marked enemies (remember the Q and W?) take a big chunk of extra damage, stunned if they're hit with the edge and won't be marked again for a few seconds. If it hits only 1 enemy, they get silenced or stunned for oonger if they're hit with the edge. This ability aims to solve one of Skarner's biggest problems that the other abilities didn't address: immediate pressure. The mark interaction allows considerable damage with something like W gap close > Q slow > enhanced AA > W2 slow > E > Q > AA. The hitbox should be quite narrow though to avoid things like Flash-W-E stunning 5 people. I was going with root on the mark at the beginning, but figured that silence also helps shut down most dashes and can also help against immobile caster carries. R: I agree with the video that this should be left alone. If anything, it might be possible to have it reset the mark cooldown to give extra single target lockdown potential. Basically, this aims to make Skarner a big walking anti-carry debuff that sticks to the enemy's face that also can be a catcher, (somewhat) duel people, have a good setup with W-E and have good macro potential with the pillars.

I'd love to see another DoT melee champion. I'd give him a Camille-style slash on his Q that does a bleed stack that would be the same DoT as Darius, so rather than stacking with each other, Skarner can help a Darius get to 5 bleed stacks faster. Then on his W I would give him a side-ways dash (like Diana's crescent skill shot, but a dash) to give him some weird and unusual bug-themed mobility, and the dash also gives him a minor defensive buff, maybe a shield so he can trade in lane. Then for his E I would give him a Xin Zhao-style long and thin stab with his tail, that ALSO does a DoT, but this one is magic damage (bleed is physical) and I would apply an uncommon debuff to this poison, maybe a damage reduction, instead of the usual slows we see. His ult would basically stay the same, but apply stacks of his E tail stab poison. His passive should probably be a defensive mechanic, or a mobility mechanic, like whenever he is attacked or hit with an ability, he gets a small amount of MR and Armor, and move speed. So the more you blast him, he gets a little tankier and faster each time. (Because drawn out DoT-style fighting)

I've been reading other people's kits, and while I don't think yours is perfect, gosh other people can't even make a consistent kit, at least yours have most abilities fit together well. I'm not sure what to think of the unique dash, and the extra tacked on stuff. But I still think this is one of the best fan concepts.

2nd comment after watching the video *** Thank you Vars for this one ! Like he mentionned, Skarner is not terrible to play. He actually feels decent in my opinion. The only thing i don't really enjoy is his passive -___- He feels underwhelming if the enemy teams captures the flag. His kit is quite good but he suffers from being a jungler that every other champion in the game can deny because all of them can capture his spires. Many people gravitate towards champions because of their esthetic, some others will enjoy the abilities and some the game play. I think the design of the champion is 10/10. He looks great and he did age well (some skins need some love yes XD ), i would give his abilites a low 6/10 just because of the passive and game play 8/10 (he clears camps very well and can take drags on his own quite easily). His passive is just a little bit too unique and because he's not meta, there is no way for people to wanna try him out because all people hear is how bad he is when in fact he's just okay. He's just okay :)

I'd like to see him bring back his kind, give him zzrot portal or however it was spelled except it just spawns baby scorpions. I remember hearing about the spider class from lotr online where they would burrow and spawn baby spiders then lock people in place while poisoning them and letting the spiders deal damage. I think that could be cool for skarner like he could burrow down and leave a scorpion egg trap sort of like shaco box then when he drags an enemy over it they would hatch and attack, thus keeping his ult while also BRINGING BACK HIS RACE GET MY BOYS BACK IN TOWN

Kind of want a bard meep mechanic with him. Since he is a jungler, he would have to collect crystal around the map to scale better for his abilities to become stronger. Like his w were a shield still, then collecting in crystal and cashing it in for a w that gives slow immunity to make it safe to press r.

I feel like skarner isn't good enough as a tank nor as a juggernaut. I would love if they made him like a volibear but for late game. A tanky juggernaut with engage that can build tanky but also the classic trinity sterak build. I don't want him to be just another tank. And I love tanks but he is a juggernaut that should beat everyone in a 1vs1.

It might be very odd, but playing Skarner as a diver support is actually very fun and not that bad. Sure it's not a top tier, but I find it more relevant than in the jungle. In my opinion, Skarner is a terrible Juggernaut with his actual kit and shouldn't be played as one, but he is ok as a diver. Playing against bot lanes with low disengage lets you pressure them quite well, you usually go for high mobility which let you roam mid while beneficing from the crystals bonus move speed. In teamfights you can either dive the enemy team or protect your carry with your CC, you build full tank to engage and disrupt.

You mentioned that Skarner's passive is kinda cool, since it creates a little mini-game of controlling spires, but it's actually a terrible idea. The spires only appear at four predetermined points within the jungle. So, Skarner's passive actually says "play jungle, or you don't have a passive." So, when you combine his underwhelming kit with the fact that he's pretty much forced into a role that for some reason is being auto-filled a lot in solo queue, it's no wonder he isn't getting played. If he didn't have that passive, he would at least have a chance, albeit a slim one, of being played in lane.

i hope they keep his q somewhat similar and spammy and a circle around him, i think the idea of making him a breaker is sick i think that would make sense with a move like his q, and i also really miss the attack speed buff on recast but maybe it could be shifted to q cdr instead? so it's better when you're ulting? the q cdr could be longer than it is currently but becomes faster than current after a few uses. i like gameplay that involves running into a crowd and pressing a button a lot and if his kit was built around making a way of doing that thats not just braindead and stat checky thatd be lovely but ik thats kinda contradicting itself but a man can dream

Skarner main here i actually play him mostly because of his w and e (and of course ulti) i think skarners biggest problem is his passive passive is so hard to get because skarner is weak early and late can't get the opportunity to get them and a lot of players play him top because of that including me and even though his q is spammy it still doesn't do much dmg and when you count it doesn't do anything besides dmg it is pretty much useless in my opinion

Dude old galio mains are the biggest chads in league history. His old version is less known than old yorick but was hella fun to play. The awkward champs that feel like they have no real place in the meta were and still are the most enjoyable champs to play

Most people underestimated his early damage and ignore it when they try to play him. This problem also happen to many other champion like Kog'maw, Twitch, Corki, Ivern but it more severe on Skarner.

One of the things that I've always thought about Skarner is that he looks silly. From the get go he always felt more like a Pokemon than anything else (in fact, the devs thought so too, which is why they added the Pokémon joke). The bright purple colour with the relatively small size with a huge head makes him look anything but threatening. First think I'd do to him was go for the Urgot treatment and actually make a monster out of him.

I agree skarner has a lot of potential. In the skarner mains discord we have a rework discussion channel that we've had since forever and there's so much stuff in there, hundreds of ideas made in all the time. I just hope they don't make him purely a tank ult bot and focus more on the fighter aspects of his kit because imo that's what he should be.

I like his passive, and I think Riot can add a lot more zoning potential to it. Maybe it can be updated to be upgradable, by collecting his missing crystals around the map (like Bard's Meep) to add more stats and features to his pillars (like Gangplank's ultimate). Or he can make a few temporary pillars elsewhere, like Azir's turret. Or he can collect something from his pillars (like Corki's package) from time to time, giving him and his team mate some buffs for a while.

I miss his venom buildup from his previous version. It resonates well with a juggernaut fantasy that focuses on cc rather than damage. Make him poison his opponents with stacks and then expunge them for cc which relates to the poison buildup. One stack is a moderate slow, two stacks is a Zilean level slow or a root, three stacks is a stun etc. It's like a Darius passive but with cc (since he uses neurotoxin or something). I feel like Riot doesnt work enough with the concept of debuffs that the champ who inflicted it can interact with. The most recent example that comes to mind is Lilia Ult. With that poison concept as a base you can tweak the gameplay pattern you want to see. Lets say Skarner can apply up to 3 crystaline venom stacks on his opponents and he has one ability that triggers it. The first stack applies a decent slow (when you need it in a pinch), the second stack a root (the one you are usually aiming for) and the third stack allows him to ult the opponent (pay off for longer fights). His ult can be two parts, the first one applies three stacks to a chosen opponent in about melee range, the second cast can pull a target with 3 stacks like his ult does now. In other words, he keeps his current ult with a bit of a delay but can ult everyone now when he has the setup. With that in mind, you can now tweak how he gets those stacks and balance him that way. Give him the ability to apply one stack with ease, the second one should be reasonable easy to apply and the third one rewards patience and the sacrifice for his strongest cc. Just an idea, I hope that Riot works with debuffs in more interesting ways than they do right now and Skarner seems like a decent candidate.

I was a former Skarner main (until Kalista got released and she was so infuriating to play against as Skarner I droped the champion out of trauma and became a Shaco onetrick since but that's another story) and one thing he used to be really good against is at outdueling other carries. Assassins, skirmishers and divers specifically, because while his frontloaded damage wasn't great, non-tanks have a hard time witstanding his damage for very long while Skarner himself is very durable. In addition, because he does mixed damage, its not easy to simply slap a single defensive item and call it a day like its done to other tanks. Nowdays its more difficult to have sucess on this medium DPS/high durability style because of the prevalance of lifesteal builds. That said, I don't think he needs to be rebuilt from scratch. Remember his first passive? Where basic attacks refund all his abilities' cooldowns. At the time this passive existed, Skarner's shield didn't scale off his HP yet. Getting a bunch of your own HP (and movement speed) as a shield every couple of seconds as long as you can stay in combat will make him very tough for conventional tank busters to shred because Skarner won't increase the damage he is taking through %health damage even though he is getting a lot of free HP in practice because that comes in form of a shield. Skarner's spammable Q plus sheen procs are the reason I think you underestimate his damage output. Sure it is nothing terrifying, but my idea is keeping him as that medium DPS/high durability threat that you can't kill, but will kill eventually you if you can't get him off you. It is not *the best* ability in the world, but it is not the worst. Skarner's E is an interesting case because in its current iteration with his old passive the moment he latches onto someone, he won't let go anymore. I don't think a champion with a built-in spear of shojin should have a stun. Still, having at least a slow is in order, as it is his only way to slow people down from a distance for him to get close. What I think it'd be interesting property for this ability, however, is some sort of grievous wounds and/or anti-shield. The idea is making him good at battles of attriction, and the reason he is no longer good at it is the prevalence of sustain. By lowering his opponent's sustain, rather than shrugging his DPS off, his damage on lifesteal duelists will stick. This won't give Skarner Lee Sin's popularity or anything, but it will give him back the role he used to excel at in earlier years: he was really scary for melee carries to face.

skarner was one of my mains from when i started back on the old rift. I wish you could build damage but he truth is he is a dps, support/style jungle who relies on his shields to out tank and annoy and harrass fights with his ultimate only to finally use it to shutdown someone important. When you enemy over extends you have to be there since you can't dps that well you have to rely on macro, and counter jungling in an efffiecient manner

There was a time when I faced a full AP top Skarnner, it was not a fun match-up to say the least. He's as tanky as Mord, has Jax levels of attack speed, has a very annoying trade pattern, and top it all off I have absolutely no idea how to play against him. We still won that game because we have better mid-late game but it still left a bitter memory of top Skarnner to me.

I would love skarners new design to be based around dehaka from heroes of the storm. He is a really unique champion with full map coverage and sustain, but next to no damage. Just goes in, pulls enemies to the backline and retreats to do something else on the map.

Another issue is that, when Skarner gets that miracle planet alineation and becomes some what more viable, not degenerate or unfair just viable, Rito decides to nerf him directly or inderectly for no particular reason returning him to square 1. I like to play him but its frustrating that he gets fucked over and over again when its already unpopular to begin with.

With skarner I focused on health and health regen so I can stun and reposition a lot during a single fight while soaking a ton of damage.

i wish they keep the spires but maybe make them give out of combat buffs like movespeed, mana regen and maybe heal %missing health when he captures one, Imo the biggest problem is that if you fight on a spire you have 4k gold of stats(sadly atk speed is not even good on him) but if you fight 2 meters further you get nothing, i think the spires should stay and just make them give utility over combat/clearing stats.

Skarner, Udyr, Syvana and Hecarim all gain relevance when movement speed is a huge part of the game because that is all those old champions relied on. Their design necessitated them being the fastest champs in the game, but with so many movements speed options and wall dashes, raw speed does nothing without something - hence why Hecarim has more relevance than the others with a massive ult that is not stopped by walls like the other two. Just relics of an old time and all of them will need something to really give them an identity. Just my two cents as a longtime player though

Ive been playing a lot of divine sunderer skarner recently. Its been a lot of fun outdueling so many ppl bc of how well he synergizes with sheen, while also providing a lot of lockdown. I think the main 2 problems is that too much power is gated to his passive, and that he doesnt have enough tankiness to warrant his very close range playstyle, esp since it feels like his base stats have been screwed over. Im more optimistic about this rework than usual, but i would love to see a skarner that is more focused on staying in the thick of the fight, while still providing a lot of lockdown.

I think I share your opinion that he need to be vastly different. As i commented my ideas on ur yno1plays of him, I would turn him into the def of a vanguard because that is his title. His current pass an Q are trash, his W,E,R r salvageable with the right buffs. Turn Q into dash, used toward enemy is above ground destroys projectiles, if used away goes underground. W add pass of hp regen based on how many enemies hit him, E fuse with Q, R dmg dealt heals him an allies.

My thoughts on him are more gamplay oriented. I've really noticed lately that even if I LOVE a champion concept, if they're not fun or they struggle to do their one job, I won't like them. The opposite is true too, I've enjoyed playing champions I dislike conceptually because they're good at what they are supposed to do As of right now... scarner is supposed to use his ultimate, plain and simple. Yet he struggles to do that other than just... running at you. On top of that, outside of his spires (kinda slapped on idea too), he really has no reason to be only able to be a jungler the way he is. My proposition? Give him an underground burrow kinda like rakan's engage. He dives under and pops in with a knock up, ult grabs a priority target, and then gets out of there. Tank and catcher can go hand in hand here. Good engage to catch, good bulk to survive leaving with the target. This could let him become a tank support / jungler rather than 100% jungler. His crystal exoskeleton should be a shield for him still. And a crystal shard long range projectile slow would be good too, maybe one that increases attack speed against a hit target to keep him having some 1v1 instant pressure and damage to help an adc or win a 1v1 if it's drawn out enough to fire off multiple shards and shields. His passive... either needs a full scrap or a big change. Perhaps change the spires to kinda hexgates that only skarner can use. Maybe he can go to a spire, use it to pop to one of the other spires in a few seconds on a good long cooldown? That way he has roaming ability as both a support and jungler

his passive should be the same as deadmans plate movement speed and next auto does extra damage and slows q should remain the same instead it does true damage after u r hit more than once his w should make him unstoppable for 2 seconds to put skill expression on him reaching his target His E should be a skillshot that puts brittle ona target similar to orhnn and if ur hit with his ult while in brittle the duration should be doubled that he drags u around

It’s hard for me to consider champ to be a legitimate failure unless they either A, actively drove away the player base or B, make absolutely no money from skin sales and since Riot hides that data, it’s hard to know what champs do indeed help grow the game/sell with skins and which ones do not sell skins/help grow the playerbase. We can only guess by looking at trends of how the newer champs are handled like the fact that every champ looks like a Hunky boy or Cute/sexy girl or from the sparse comments from different rioters.

I dont know if I missheard, but Skarner's original kit had the slow on Q, which he spammed, which is how he stayed on top of people. His first update moved slow to E.

The audio quality of the background music seems to be a little on the bad side, not sure if that is due to compression in the render or if it's just the music itself, it's not that bad and the video is still serviceable, but it is a bit unpleasant to listen to, with headphones at least.

imagine this, for its Q he grabs you and split out your soul like illaoi moving you to a side like draven, if you run to your soul, nothing happens, but if you run away it shatters, slowing you down and dealing damage,.

I think giving skarner a max health magic damage burn on an ability might be a good way to incorporate the scorpion theme, and if he continues to hit them it extends the burn duration for a second or two longer. There is so much possibility with skarner and I’m excited to see what they have in-store. I think a strong play style for him is strong engage with his últ, but the rest of his kit is good for long term fights where he wears down his opponent.

I think he should became an specialist, focused on capturing enemies, so I would love to see some dashes for that. Maybe he could have some scale with armor/speed, like warwick or rammus.

i got like 200k mastery 7 and im very sad abt the incoming rework tbh. I think if you know how to play him correctly he becomes a real threat to the enemy team!!! Love this champ for what he is

I don't think Skarner needs that much of a full rework, I'm describing how I would do it: Making Skarner's Q with a sort of "progressive damage": hitting someone with his auto attack would land a mark (another type of mark than his E; let's say a poison's touch mark, it's a scorpion ! why would Cassiopeia have poison, and not Skarner ?). Marks would stack up to 4 times. Everytime Skarner hits a marked target with Q, the marks would activate and deal poison damage mostly scaled off his own max HP and also AP. The more marks the more poison. I would say that poison should be very mild in early game (Skarner is not meant to be an early game bully), and become much more brutal mid-game as the base damage increases with Q level. Hitting one that has max stacked marks would in addition reduce target's Armor / Magic Resist by a certain (low) amount, + (% of his own Armor) (% of his own MR). Maybe let's make his ult add 2 or 3 marks immediately on the targeted champion (could be 2-3-4 at R lvl 1-2-3). Reduce R's base AP scaling since it would deal indirect DOT through marks already. Also make Q on-hit base damage back to reasonable flat damage + AD/AP scaling (that doesn't scale too heavily though) and not % of max HP. He needs that to farm on the lane, and may also benefit from that in jungle. Make early game Q CD a bit higher, but good damage already. So his 1v1 combo could be something like: E, AAs (while opponent is stun) until you decide to Q and trigger the poisons. If he manages to hit Q with max stacks, W helps to chase the enemy and deal one or two more AAs on reduced armor. This full-full combo should be strong enough to make it respected by the lane opponent (so that he avoids the full combo at all costs), but should not 100/0 with the ult before Skarner gets fed; or maybe just a squishy. Since his E is a skillshot and doesn't have low cooldown at all, it isn't too brutal of a skillset. Skarner is meant to defeat you on the duration, slowly taking an advantage over you, not in 3 seconds like Irelia. For his crystals, I suggest they'd spawn also on opponent towers / tower ruins, up to inhibitors but not T4s. Make it so every unique crystal stacks permanent bonus attack speed to Skarner, giving him benefit from a lot of roaming across the map, but limited scaling since it triggers once per crystal. However, crystal areas when triggered only give speed boost to Skarner (less than it is now). Transfer a bit of speed boost to his W potentially. That way Skarner could build into whatever he wants (except an assassin). Could be with Liandry / Demonic Embrace, with Chemtank (to have better farming) / Demonic Embrace, with a hybrid bruiser build with attack speed and maybe on-hit damage, or rather full tank / high HP to play even longer fights and play on enemy armor reduction. If he knows that his team plays more around AD or AP damage, he would build more Armor / MR to make his armor reduction passive fit his team better. His favorite rune probably would be Lethal Tempo or Hail of Blades - even if he plays full tank - which would make a pretty unique mix. Make it so AOE items like Titanic Hydra don't work with Q passive.

His last rework, the one that made the spires thingy, totally. He is not that bad though, even if by today's standards, pre-rework Skarner would've most likely get power crept off. The thing about Skarner is that half of his kit is that of a hyper carry with a high DPS mixed damage ability and an attack speed steroid, but the other half is utility. That is not necessarely a bad thing, Skarner could be a carry against melee heavy comps because he could match their DPS while being much tankier. Meanwhile, into ranged heavy comps he played a more utility role. Tank shredding and lifesteal itens and champions became way more common over the years, so the tankyness that made Skarner such a good duelist is no longer relevant. Before, Skarner's matchup into skirmishers was borderline onesided in Skarner's favor. Nowdays a single item can give a skirmisher all the DPS stats they need, lifesteal and even a shield.

To me the way to deal with that is to make it so he can lock them down better, cause a lot of skirmishers rely on their mobility to function. Giving him Grounded on His E and a weak slow on his Q would do a lot to make him more viable (even if the slow was max rank only). And I'm personally okay with making him lean into being an anti-melee anti-carry juggernaut. It's already where he's at, but it's not fleshed out properly. He's the jungler on a kiting comp that persistently peels off the enemy frontline and holds them in place so your backline can do their job or he's the toplaner sits in a sidelane splitpushing and hardcounters the typical duelist top champs that you'd want to send up at him. The problem is his tools within that role aren't tailored to that exact strategy. And I don't think his Ult's enough justification for that to be the case to be honest. Certainly not the spires.

I’m sad about losing Skarner. He’s goofy but also so very fun. However I’d change some things to modernize him. First I’d remove his passive. Just make it so that he has increased movement speed when unseen by enemies and/or near terrain and make it last for a few seconds after that unless he autos someone. Or make his movement speed increase with a tank stat like bonus health, something simpler and more independent. I’d change his Q to proc his E stun, give it a longer cool down and make its damage higher with a slow. I’d keep his W but add tenacity, remove the ramping movement speed (which is now in the passive) and when the shield is destroyed he gets an AS and MS buff. I’d make the E more similar to a Braum Q so it can't pass through champions, but it's wider or an AOE ability like a Voli E in shape and timing. Keep the R as it is.
