Skate fishing on the Isle of Skye

Skate fishing locations are about as guarded as the Crown jewels. So I've spent the last couple weeks, planning our rough Scotland itinerary, then scouring Google maps and cross checking with navionics to try and find potential spots.
Imagine then, my surprise, when checking one of my many potential spots; on a small pier, on the Isle of Skye, in the middle of November, I happen across a guy already fishing. Then imagine my shock, when I ask him how his session is going, he recognises me off youtube 😅
Well I wasn't planning on fishing there and then, but when the first person you come across, that watches the channel, mentions there's skate about, I couldn't resist telling Sarah to sit tight and I'll be back in a couple of hours.
Stewart, it was an absolute pleasure fishing with you. Marie, keep up the studies. I'm sure I'll see you back on this spot again, hopefully in the not too distant future!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I think I've fished there when I was young. Me, my dad and his fishing pal Wayne, went over to visit family of his. I bet I was only 11 or 12, but Arklow definitely rings a bell, we fished from the beach until it got too rough then sheltered behind the harbour wall and fished into the harbour for a while I think 🤔

You'll have noticed the advertisements for Charter boats at Mallaig. Not sure if it's old or the guy is still doing charter trips but they had pictures of Skate and Halibut. Yes advertising Halibut trips. There's also Cod in the teens caught from rocks marks at the top of Skye In late winter that the locals keep hidden. I guess it's not a secret now but well worth a go if your up there in winter.

Yes Mallaig and then Oban too, when we worked our way down there, lots of charter options. I'm itching to get back up there. Highly unlikely it will be this year, maybe early next year, but definitely by summer time.

No stopping you with that van of yours mate. If you make it down to my 'local' beaches, you've got north Wales a couple of hours away, Bristol channel 2hrs from mine, and once you're there it's a short drop down to Chesil beach 😉

great video just a bit of advice that rig you made with 100lb mono u really need a bead to protect that knot both ends as if you do hook a skate itll snap the line in seconds (speaking from experience lol)

I'm pretty sure i know where you were fishing (its one of the only piers on the west coast i haven't fished from). There used to be a guy in a gift shop there who always took photos of peoples dogs, and he had a couple of parakeets. When there's a lot of spurs around, i like to use a bunch of beads (8-10 of them) on the trace and a power gum stop above them, pushing them down tight on the hook to act as a bit of a protection sleeve at the spurs soon get through the mono traces - incidentally i use 150lb nylon. Circle hooks are also much more preferable - you get more hook-ups and they're almost always solidly hooked in the corner of the mouth.

Cheers Graham, I'll definitely be going back up there at some point, so all the tips are really useful. Speaking to other guys I saw up there, I was really under prepared. The beads are a good call, I was going to make up some rigs next time, with a mix of main body mono and wire trace. I agree though, I much prefer circle hooks.

It was cold enough sitting on the pier Matthew, not sure I fancy taking a dip in Scottish waters with a spear! I wouldn't mind giving it a go free diving in Australia next time we are over there though!

@@theawfulangler Those southern and beautiful warm waters do feel more compfortable, but down there most things can kill you. Cold water I am used to, Blue ringed octopus to sharks, in sea, on land there's just 'Fuck Off' numbers of things that want to end you. Did you know the funnel web spider is one of the most venemous spiders known to man, but for most of its existance had no sapiens to be venomous against? And I do accept that great whites are know off scottish waters. If you want some sun, may I suggest New Zealand? Statistically safer. Best wishes mate... m out.

Cheers John, I was well chuffed. They may well do. But being part of the shark family, I imagine they will defecate themselves, which taints the meat. So you either have to fillet instantly or soak the meat prior to cooking to remove the ammonia. Its not something I would attempt with the limited kit/space we have in the van!

I am confused. These look like sharks (which of course a ray is) but when we think of skates they are actual rays here off Washington State.

Sorry for the confusion Thomas! You're right, I was targeting skate (large rays) hence the title of the video. Unfortunately, I couldn't hook up to a Skate due to the amount of Spurdogs in the area, which are a species of shark. Hope that clears up the confusion?

There are steps to the side of the pier. It was tricky with that spur as it still had quite a bit of fight left in it, where from what I've been told, once a skate is on the top they're all out of juice. So the plan would be to slowly guide it round to the steps and unhook it, photo op, then let it get its breath back before releasing

@@theawfulangler It's good you had a plan, always a good start. Just be prepared to lean back against it for a good hour and a leader less than 200lbs will lead to a lost skate. You're lucky being up there, do you live on Skye now?

I've got one mate, didn't take it as I intended to fish rock marks with 'easy' access into the water. As for landing big fish on this mark, there's a set of diving steps round the corner of the pier when needed.
