Skateboard Wrist Guards can be a fairly controversial protection accessory, in this video i talk about how they protect you and in my own opinion which ones are best and why.
If you are new to skateboarding and considering buying a set of wrist guards this video is for you, I hope you find it useful and interesting. Please let me know what you think in the comments below and feel free to ask me any questions, I'd be more than happy to try and help by answering them the best i can.

I am here because of a slam I took today getting way too cocky with power slides. I am fairly good at catching myself without using my hands, but today I took a full downhill impact directly to palm. I swore I broke my wrist, and visions of myself in a cast started flashing in my mind. Thankfully after a long ice soak I am merely hurt, not injured.

I would like to add my thanks to the throngs of others you have received for making this. I’m new to skateboarding. Found a ‘Mindless’ pintail longboard in the loft just before Christmas (I think it may have belonged to the kids of the previous owners and just left in the loft and forgotten about as the board has very few marks on it, wheels spin freely etc). Being a kid from the 70s/80s always wanted to skateboard but a broken ankle as a 6yr old learning tricks on a bmx, and later a broken wrist whilst roller skating as a 20yr old means I’m now looking at protecting myself properly when learning to skateboard…..I’m also taking bets with myself to see what part of my body I will break as a 47yr old 😂😂. Will def check out your other vids - especially anything to do with headgear no knee pads. Funnily enough I’m also looking to get my motorcycle license and the D3-0 material you mention is talked a lot in protective biking gear, as is the design of gloves - except they have sliders to protect the wrist as I’m sure any material starts to get worn away when rubbing at 10pm or higher on asphalt/tarmac etc. Consider yourself getting a new subscriber as a result of this great vid. Cheers mate - and here’s hoping you and the family are having a grand festive holiday 🎉😊

Thank your very much for your clear and calm review. Very interesting to listen to your opinion and your conclusion/decicions! (After breaking my wrist, i am also re-considering about safety-gear). Did you ever consider wearing an impact / protection jacket for bowls? And do you always wear knee, ellbow and hip protection?
@NeilHesterSkateboarding

I’m glad to hear you found it useful 👍🏻 I have a body armour under jacket for my motorcycle but I wouldn’t wear it for skateboarding it’s too restrictive for arm movement . Really like the smiths pro… specially for being flexible. Saying that… I still thinking the best way to avoid wrist injury is by knowing how to fall… roll and slide. Good video Neil… great message there. In the end I think pads will always wins the argument. 🤘

Thanks Mate, Yeah its great to learn how to fall well but there's always going to be those slams that catch you unaware, If you saw the clip of me falling head first from the coping into the vert bowl on my IG recently you'll know what i mean :) Maybe one day i'll be good enough to not need them but while I'm still learning and they are proving themselves to protect me I'll keep wearing them. same goes for helmets, I've bashed my head way too many times to not keep on wearing one and witnessed too many other people not wearing them wipe out, I just don't see the point of not protecting myself and it makes me a way more confident skater.
@RonaldoBeatles
@RonaldoBeatles 2 года назад
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding haven’t seen it yet… gonna head over to IG and check it out. As for helmets… this is not questionable. We all should use them. I think you guys in Vert are more aware of it or at least it became part of your skate routine. You get ready to go to a bowl or a ramp and you pack it all up for it. As for street skating, it can be unplanned at times or something to do with the feeling of not carrying extra stuff with you. Helmets is something that no matter what, we should all be wearing them.
@NeilHesterSkateboarding
@NeilHesterSkateboarding 2 года назад
@@RonaldoBeatles here: instagram.com/p/CTfLUBElC5J/? Street vs transition is a strange divide and I think naturally street skaters are less compelled to wear protective gear out of convenience but to me it can be even more likely you’ll get injured. First you have the concrete which doesn’t flex when you slam on it where are the wood of a ramp does so it’s a softer landing, also street skating you have a shorter distance to fall which means less time to think about how you will fall and more likely you’ll just hit hard, so it’s even more important to learn how to roll and make it your natural reaction. That can be really hard for older people to learn because your reflexes and response time gets a lot slower the older you get. I know I’m not going to be skating street much any more so won’t even be bothering to try and prepare for that, there’s too much risk for other injuries with street skating for me these days.

Hi Neil. I recently had an injury (I've never had one in my life). I fell backwards and caught myself with both hands. The problem is that the violence of the fall affected my elbow and I had an injury that included a sprain, ligament tear, and microfracture. Therefore, I need to know what could be good for the wrists, a splint that better absorbs falls, thinking about elbows and shoulders. Thank you for all the information!

Hi Pamela, it would be really hard to say, personally i think the flexmeter wrist-guards are good as things get, i hope by that incident being the first time for you that it wouldn't happen again anytime soon. but aside from that i really dont know what else you could do.
@alanguages
@alanguages 9 месяцев назад
I also recommend the Demon Flexmeter. The science behind it is to help dissipate the force from traveling up as well, while also preventing that force from affecting the wrist. The force is suppose to absorbed by the wrist guard itself and minimize to downright prevent injury and force to the arms themselves.

The D3Os look interesting. Recently I broke my pinky metacarpal on the side of my hand right at the top of the wrist joint. Basically I think I karate chopped the pavement. Have you seen any wrist guards that have some armor on the side of the hand?

@tommygunn87
@tommygunn87 10 месяцев назад
Just some food for thought, bones heal much faster and more completely than ligaments. The last injury you want is torn ligament, especially in your wrist. Realistically you'll likely never fully recover.
@alanguages
@alanguages 9 месяцев назад
The Demon Flexmeter actually helps in dissipate the force and so it won't travel up the arm, while also preventing the full force against the wrist, so it won't break. I had another brand of wristguard, which was tight, and I landed with my outstretched arms. The force travelled up my arm all the way to my collar bone. Although it did not break, I could feel the pain ever since. Just a possibility of falling again, that a small force might break it, which I am scared about. The Demon Flexmeter I have more confidence in, as the force dissipates, thus even the small collar bone, won't be impacted like it did with the other wrist guard I used.
@NeilHesterSkateboarding
@NeilHesterSkateboarding 9 месяцев назад
I’ve been wearing them for years now and never so far hurt my wrist or arm while skating with them. The few times I haven’t worn them or worn other wrist guards I’ve hurt myself. That’s all I need for confirmation there’s nothing better I’ve seen or heard of as yet.

One thing I've been considering recently is how slippery the plastic on the palms are. The ones I have now are quiet slick so when my palms hit the ground they slide a little. This seems like a benefit at first because your hand doesn't get stopped all at once (spreading out the force) but I think this caused an injury recently. When I landed on my palm it slide out and this caused me to kind of hyperextend my elbow. So now it hurts to extend my elbow out all the way especially under some weight like carrying something. I might rough up the plastic on the palms so they have more friction
@NeilHesterSkateboarding
@NeilHesterSkateboarding 2 года назад
I guess it also could go the other way, if they were too grippy if might force you to jar something but it will also depend heavily on the surface you ride, wood is generally pretty slidey but some concrete can be very grippy , I’ve had my knee pads wrenched sideways by grippy concrete in the past which gave me abrasion burns on my skin from inside the pads. I think being slidey is more preferable than grippy for me personally.

Have you tried the Triple 8 hard wired? I like the idea of a glove combined with a wrist guard but not sure about the quality.
@NeilHesterSkateboarding
@NeilHesterSkateboarding 2 года назад
You mean the “Hired Hands” ? I haven’t tried them but I know a couple of guys who do have them, I can ask for their thoughts. To me they look like they have that same kind of narrow solid bar on the bottom that bruised my hands on the previous ones I tried so unless they have some very good palm padding below that bar I don’t think I would like them. Also as I mentioned I feel a lot more confident with ones that have a bit of flex to them. They also seem very short to me and end just after the wrist joint so a very different kind of design than what I like about the flexmeter’s
@nekro9t2
@nekro9t2 2 года назад
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding Ok, got it - yeah they probably do suffer in those design respects. It would be nice to have a glove/ wrist guard combo as sometimes when they're separate they don't feel comfortable together. Unfortunately I can't find any physical stores that have them in stock where I can try first.
@NeilHesterSkateboarding
@NeilHesterSkateboarding 2 года назад
@@nekro9t2 My friend who has them says they are very well padded in the palm and very good in general but fall apart unusually quick so the build quality isn’t as good as expected.
@christophernolan7464
@christophernolan7464 2 года назад
I've got the hired hands, no problem with the palm splint digging in as there is plenty of padding on the palms. This was the main selling point for me as I wanted the protection from smacking my palm against the floor just as much as stopping a broken wrist. This is also why the short length of them doesn't worry me. Personally I won't be buying another pair, I've had them since June and they have not stood up to the short test of time. It's a shame I can't post a pic on here but on one of them the fabric holding the 2 splints together is nearly completely torn. That said they're a great guard when new and if they were the same price as some competitors I would just keep replacing but for me they cost enough that they should be lasting much longer. Hope this helps.

Wrist guards can be great and save you a lot of pain but iv never liked them. I think they train people to fall the wrong way. You never wanna put your hands straight out the you fall. Better to wear a good helmet and knee pads and fall knee first when you can
@NeilHesterSkateboarding
@NeilHesterSkateboarding 2 года назад
I don’t think they train you to fall any way, it’s a natural reaction to put your hands out when you fall. Yes you need to train yourself not to put your hands out, but until you can they save a lot of injuries. Just last night I unexpectedly fell backwards and caught my hand behind me as I fell I’m pretty sure I would have done a whole lot more damage if I didn’t have wrist guards on but as it is I think I’ve just pulled something when my hand bent back. See my instagram stories if you want to see the slam. Training yourself to fall knee first is always best and I do that very well 99% of the time if you’ve seen me skate but I still get caught out by surprise sometimes especially going fakie.

Great video Neil. I am also a huge fan of the Demon D30 wrist guards and they are all I will use now. I wear these before a helmet! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TGdBgJGhLuA.html I actually broke my wrist with wrist guards on, and unfortunately it was NOT at the end of the guard and didn't break the forearm bones. Instead, it was in the joint so it was a distol fracture and required a metal plate and 9 screws. I actually had wrist guards on when it happened, and as you've shown they are all pretty much the same protection until you get into the D30s. Since my switch to them, I've taken a lot of slams, and even lent them out to people learning to drop in. Needless to say they have gone through a lot! But every time people get up and walk away! I haven't seen anything on the market close to these. And to the arguments on falling correctly... there's a pro in every contest with a cast on their wrist (in the Olympics too) and the level of skating doesn't get higher than that ;) ... so I'm going to argue that you can't react perfectly, and that's what pads are for. No one's paying me to skate, so I intend on making it back to my paycheck in one piece! Great message, keep it up!
@NeilHesterSkateboarding
@NeilHesterSkateboarding 2 года назад
Thanks 👍🏻 yeah there’s always going to be that one slam that takes you by surprise , I’ve seen it so much from people I skate with who are a million times better than me and still get hurt so I’m just into minimising that as much as possible. Just this past week I slammed on a vert ramp and smashed my hand on the surface exactly as I did when I broke my wrist and just the shockwave of that in my hand caused some serious concern and pain, if I didn’t have the D3O’s on it would have been a break I have no doubt about that, instead now I just have some mild aches. I’m in my second pair of these wrist guards now and the first one lasted well over two years so I’m happy to pay for new ones when needed. 👍🏻👊🏼
