A SkateDad's Skateboarding journey.
In 2013, I started the process of relearning how to skateboard after 25 years off the board so that I can teach my autistic son how to skate.
Up until 2 years ago, I had never ridden a skatepark or had much experience riding transition.
For years, we struggled to have him even acknowledge us as his parents and to find a common bond as a family. Through skateboarding: Our autistic son acknowledges us.
We have been grateful for having found skateboarding.
One day, our son found an old skateboard in the garage which he had no idea how to ride. He just found that the wheels spun and he would sit there and spin the wheels over and over. One day, he had a meltdown and I put him on the front of the skateboard and rolled him across the sidewalk.
I noticed an immediate relaxing and calming effect that it had on him and we began to use skateboarding as a therapeutic activity to allay his anxieties, build confidence and a relationship with our son.
We have yet to have a verbal conversation with our son. However, I feel that my son communicates to me through his skateboarding and I am very grateful for that.

I'm 42- same background from the '80's. No parks just launch ramps and ditches and usual steet stuff. I've had a board for a few years but never get on it. Totally inspired now. Thank You so much for the video.

Awesome! Thanks for posting; it's inspiring. You're good! I'm just getting back into it after 12 year hiatus. First day back on the board I broke my arm, haha. I'm not discouraged yet, though.

Man, this is so encouraging! My brother got me into a FB skating group for old farts and I ended up getting a newer 8" board. Your first video at the beginning is me all over this past weekend going out to the local park and getting my balance back. What was once such and easy ollie now looks laughable. Made it a third time out to the park on an early Monday morning and had it to myself....so much fun just carving the transitions...and such a workout!

Thanks for checking out the channel. I had forgotten about this video. I watched it again last night after your comment. It's been a long journey of relearning how to ride a skateboard again and then trying to figure out how to ride the skatepark. Looking back, I think this period was when I was enjoying it quite a bit as everything was still a new and fresh experience.

I am in my late 40's and I still skate better than most young kids do just like this guy does, age does not matter when it comes to the desire to do something we love ... ;) Great video ;)

Dude. That was awesome. The part about noone to share the stoke with, was pretty dang sad. Any old skater can relate for sure with that. I can't get adjusted to the popsicle's wheelbase. That 1/2" or so shorter wheelbase, messes me all up. The ollies are easier but everything else is sketchy and uncomfortable. I have said screw it, I'm not going to be riding switch or learning nollie tricks anyway, so.... I'm gonna ride what feels natural and what I'm comfortable on. Which is like a 88-89 style setup. Hope you're still at it, dude,

Yep, still skating at 46.....I stopped trying to ride popsicles because of the same reason. I could never get comfortable on them. I have one, but only ride it when riding smaller parks with my son. I would recommend my current rider which is a Welcome Chris Miller Catblood deck. It's 8.5" X 32.8" and has a 14.75" wb which gives me the old school feel but still short enough to be maneuverable in smaller bowls and parks.

I'm in the same situation. I have 3 nephews with autism and I'm a 35 year old skater. I have no idea how to relate but skating is working. Good luck brother!

Haha! It's all good. We all have to grow up and take different paths and journeys in life. My friends from my youth still skate and in fact own a skatepark. The other thing is that we have met so many people through skateboarding these past 4 years since...

Hey man amazing progress. I guess your really good now. Do you think its possible for a 44 year old ex freestyle BMX'er from the 80's to be able to pick up skateboarding and learning what you've learned. I have an 8 year old son and I want to get him into skating and BMX but it would be cool if we could enjoy it together.
@skating4satori672
@skating4satori672 8 лет назад
+howlingmaddmurdock Absolutely! If there's anything I have learned from this journey with my son is that "Anything's Possible." I had never ridden a skatepark until 3 years ago. From time to time, I see Dads that get down on themselves or try to play it off if they don't ride well. However, what I tell them is that at this stage in life, It doesn't matter how good you are. It's a blessing to have the health and ability to be able to ride together with their child and in the future they will appreciate you that much more for it...
