That’s not entirely true 😅 the style 44 (now known as Authentic) was meant as a deck shoe, but was adopted by skaters early on that then influenced Vans to create the style 46 or simply the Era. Vans was never a work shoe company. And they also wasn’t almost bankrupt before marketed towards skaters. They almost went bankrupt in the 80s long after marketed their shoes for skaters. It was because they expanded too quickly and couldn’t keep up sales and profits while keeping production on US soil.
That zoom in on the freaked out cat cracked me up! As far as the helmet thing goes, Tony Hawk said once, "people don't wear helmets because they don't look cool, but how cool do you look with your brains falling out of your head?". I suck at skating and fall all the time, have bounced my helmet off the ground, coping, wall... a few times.
That's fucking dope my dad is 55 and I bought Him a board for Christmas and i taught him how to kick flip. Now he just cruises and don't do no tricks sadly
Most of the skateboarding injuries u see are twisted feet, and scratched skin, maybe some concussion. other than that, injuries are pretty rare. The only injuries I've had are exactly those two. I twisted my left foot, and gotten a lot of burns/scratches.
Thank you for another great quality video! You inspired me to start skating(about a year a ago) so thank you for that! This truly is my favourite channel to exist on RU-vid. Love from Europe 💜💛💚
I started watching your videos about "how to not look like a beginner" and "things beginners should be ready for" a few years ago when i just bought my board and i was so hyped :) now today i am able to do tre flips and dropping in on the vert ramp. Sir you are very motivating and to all beginners out here, dont be afraid of starting to skate! Also skaters with more experience will gladly help you with learning new thing either a ollie or a 360 dolphin flip :P. Thank you Vlskate for all those beautifull years and awesome memories
Another fun fact: Paul Van Doren (co-founder of Vans) started working for Randy’s after having dropped out of school. Eventually at was his employment at Randy’s that led the Van Dorens to Anaheim and create The Van Doren Rubber Company now just known as Vans :-)
Hi, I´m a 68 years old Skateboarder and was there from the beginning. Lots of false statement about the early days, so here´s the story: The SURF CULTURE was HUGE in the early 60´s and led to a Skateboard offspring in 1963 in California. We called it Sidewalk Surfing, not Skateboarding. In 1964 it really exploded in the whole USA, partly due to the popular skateboard music like Sidewalk Surfin by JAN & DEAN. In 1965 it went international. Company built boards started in 1963 but expanded big in 1964, Hobie Boards etc. Some homemade boards were made earlier but were more an evolution of Skates. Be sure to check out the new RU-vid film "The Skateboard Craze Of 1964" and you will learn more. Cheers....
My father skated from young age and he had to smuggle skateboards from outside of norway. And he was really good and he told me it was illegal to skate in Norway at that time.
Skateboarding is definitely dangerous AF, it’s just that most skaters are stubborn and let our injuries heal on their own. Only the serious bone breaks and concussions get reported but we are constantly hurting ourselves lmao
The randys rubber company was the original vans company. The creators sername were van Doren. People later called it just vans for short so that is how it later was called vans.
It most definitely applies. Why would it not. It's a very real risk of hiking. People go off trail all the time. Bad things can happen. Especially in states like mine with cougars, coyotes, snakes, ect. Saying it doesn't apply is asinine
hiking can be dangerous like encountering wild animals which is rare but still can happen and going off trail and not finding your way back and so skateboard has a very low change of injury because only the dumb people get injured really
Potato Abby only dumb people get injured? A small slip up or complication on a simple trick can lead to injury. A lot of beginner skaters will fall on their asses. A simple unseen pebble can lead to a broken arm. I wouldnt go as far as to call those people dumb.
3:04 Military here! If they did make their own boards, they would have been commissioned from a civilian contractor, cost way too much money, and been on par with something you could find at Walmart for way less money.
Thanks for making this video, really Nice! At the age of ten, in 1978, I made my own skateboard with wood and one old school rollerskate. At eleven I bought my First Real one. An Orange Sunset board. I live in Amsterdam, and boarding wasn't that common. After three years I stopped without a reason. And now, at the age of 53 I picked it up again. I love doing it, and I love your video's. Thank you!
I always wondered why old timey skateboards didn't have some sort of grip. When I was a kid in the early 90's (I'm 33) we had some boards without griptape, but we had sandpaper- we glued or stapled it on hahaha
I don't think it's on a historical register, but Sandy Hills aka "Lansdowne Skatepark" in Maryland just hit it's 40th anniversary October 2018 and is still operational. Just a fun fact.
I was just a kid too young to surf like my older brother, and my brother described a skate board because we never saw one. It seemed like a brilliant idea, even before we ever found our first skates and built one for the first time. This was 64 or 65, perhaps. You could always find a single girls skate laying around back then,so we built boards that we're surf board size, and all in between, because we loved it. Soon they had them in stores and my older brother got one, but our were the home made tin wheel one's that we're really good at making you wipe out.
6:25 - I actually have a theory that skating injuries are made much less severe due to the natural ragdolling which is experienced when falling off a board.
I got kicked out of a hospital for walking with my board. It never touched the ground, I kept it in my hands all the time. I had to walk in with it because its not a car that you can leave unattended at a parking or something, I told them this and they said "I don't care, leave it outside or don't come in".
Probably already somewhere in the comments, but: Paul and James Van Doren (Vans creators) actually worked for Randolph Rubber Co until 1965 and relocated to California because of it (originally from MA).
Regarding old skateparks, there’s one here in Baltimore (technically Lansdowne) call Sandy Hills Park that been around since the late 70’s with its original concrete snake run bowl still intact. From what I know, it’s one of the oldest surviving parks in the US.
Im from Norway and my mom used to tell me how skateboarding was illegal in Norway wen she was young and that someone had built a skateramp in the woods
Now that I think of it, in 19 years of skating Ive only had one compound fracture. I also broke a few fingers from falling and slammimg my hand into something, but other than that no serious injuries. Ive got to start wearing a helmet, luck runs out the longer you play something.
2:59 that’s so weird cause we had to write a project in school and make up history about something or use real history and I said the marines used skateboards in their times like wtf btw it was about skateboards and I got a A on it :)
