skekLach The Collector Biography (Dark Crystal Explained)

“Bickering like an old married couple” sums them up pretty well

I can say that when she got destroyed by Deet's darkening powers, it did at least relieve her of her suffering.

I think the Skeksis were a mixture of sins and harbingers of the end times. If that’s the case, The Collector is a mixture of greed and pestilence.

I love the fact that despite her appearance she is actually a strong fighter. Keep in mind she took out an Arathim after it blinded her

It’s obvious the Collector represents our need to want more and our emptiness. What’s even more terrifying is that there are people who are like the Collector out there to where their wants blind them. Despite not knowing much about her mystic counterpart, it’s safe to say the Monk represents what we need and being whole.

SkekLach is interesting to me because she reminded me of a puffin with her more rounded head while the other Skeksis were more Vultures, if that makes sense. While we never get a clear answer to how she got her boils, my theory after watching this video is that her hygiene was so poor it caused a skin irritation on her nose. Over time it gotten worse to the point where the boils wouldn't go away. Regardless, I still think the Collector was a very interesting looking Skeksis. After all it isnt so bad until your head explodes.

And before Deet blew up skekLach, there was a scene with Deet on her head wailing on her. I've worked in museums and I know old fabric. The way they costumed the Skeksis showed an outstanding attention to detail. The texture and color told everybody these were VERY old clothes. Another thing CGI probably couldn't accomplish.

Something kinda funny about Ursen the Monk. Unlike The collector who stole items and literally hoarded everything she got her claws on the monk was free of all personal items and never hoarded anything. They couldn't be more opposite

For some reason this particular Skeksis reminds me of an alligator snapping turtle

I’m a little torn, the comic/manga version seems a much more influential and intimidating character but also sort of an amalgamation of other skeksis like skekung, the chamberlain, the scientist, the hunter, and the treasurer. While i would have liked to see the show version of skeklach do more I find her role in gelfing affairs interesting and the fact that she was one of the first skeksis to go when the war began is relatively telling. I think they’re tougher than they make themselves out to be, she seems rather comfortable dual wielding and such and it seems she managed to take a cave spitter while getting blinded. As for the collectors gender I’m willing to take on the idea she started out as male and then decided to identify as female later.

it should also be noted that in the original comic she was present in a post-resistance Garthim war battle, in which she was challenged by SkekSil.

For some reason, this version of Lach, her looks just remind me that could she also be related to the Gourmand. They both have just more different looks to the other Skeksis.

I do feel kind of bad for skekLach. Despite her obvious affinity for torture and suffering, the sorrowful life she's had to live is not one that I would wish on anyone. Unfortunately, I was eating when I began to watch the TV series, and the first scene that shows skekLach snorting into her handkerchief as she prepared to go to Ha'rar with skekOk quickly made me lose my appetite. I was always curious about why she had the title of collector, but had a hard time enduring the snot scenes and didn't even notice her necklace of potions and tonics, or the connection of collection items with the gatherings in the tithing ceremonies. Her melancholic countenance did spark some interest in the character, however, her general mistreatment of the gelfling and disregard for hygiene countered that interest quite effectively. She is a great new addition to the vast and varied cast of skeksis and I still flinch and find myself watching through my fingers whenever she prepares to blow her nose. Another excellent study of her character DwM! I can't wait for your next video! The Sifa and Vapra cultural videos you did really helped me out with my fanfic writing. Thank you! I wish the making-of book and documentary had gone into more detail over the character's change in personality and gender from comic to show. It's almost as if they're not even acknowledging the manga's existence. The collector from the manga is a far cry from the pathetic, miserable individual from the show, almost resembling what skekSo must have been like in his youth.

I've done some tweaking of the Ooaren. Maudra Ka'loai actually has triplets, named Vlyiayo, Valya and Staglon. Triplets are probably the rarest number of childlings a Gelfling can have. Ooaren Maudra's claim to the clan's throne are a little different than others. Maudra's can choose which of her daughters will ascend. Vlyiayo is the heir in the book.

Truly, the storyies of ALL Skeksis is a collection of despair, grief and despondency. Amazing and deeply individual each of them, the Skeksis as a whole have always been much more interesting for me than the Gelflings put together.

0:48 to 1:16 I personally liked the original version of SkekLach better. I read that Manga series as a kid and that version of SkekLach was far more interesting. UrSen seemed like more of a storyteller than a Monk in the Manga series. 4:28 to 4:50 It’s so sad that UrSen was never shown and died completely off screen when SkekLach was killed, just like UrMa the Peacemaker when SkekVar was killed just a few minutes before. The only thing I can think of that a Monk and a Collector have to do with each other is that a Monk collects religious artifacts, while a Collector (especially SkekLach) would collect anything they thought was valuable in any way. I am also quite curious if SkekShod the Treasurer got SkekLach’s hoard of treasure after the Collector perished. 5:26 , 5:40 and 6:04

Ngl, I prefer the Manga version over the show's. Looks like he isn't going to mess around when it comes to collecting, if you don't deliver, he's going to collect your life.

I actually prefer the show’s take on skekLach over the comic. She shows us that evil isn’t always fierce and commandeering. Sometimes it’s more stagnant and festering, very well portrayed by her appearance and attitude.

All the Skeksis look like birds to me...except SkekLach. She reminded me of a big turtle.

Though we see some Skeksis bathing in Age of Resistance, some older material suggested that they'd adopted the practice of just piling new garments on top of their threadbare old ones over the course of centuries and never taking them off, because they were all ashamed of how much their bodies had degraded over time.

I was of the understanding that there was only one skekSis that identified as female: the Mariner... I was wrong. Thanks for the renewed insight.

I have a question, Q: In this video, you ever said that the Garthims will have more in numbers, means the skeksis needs more gruenaks. But isn’t gruenaks extinct? So how can the Skeksis produce more Garthims?

So wait... skekLach died in age of resistance. But her counterpart, the monk, was alive during the garthim wars (after skekLach's death) if I understand the storyline correctly... Seems like a plot hole to me? Or am I missing something..

A monk is a good counterpart to a collector. Monks are generally known to be less interested in the material world wanting to own only essential items. A collector is a materialistic title and would be obsessed with hoarding material worth. The monk would find more peace with less material worth while the collector would be constantly trying to fill the void inside with material stuff only to find it never made them feel better.

Great video as always but I am a bit confused on this one. How could Ursen have helped the Gelflings during a Garthim raid? Skeklach was destroyed during the battle of Stone in the Wood, just before the Garthim were created by Skektek. Ursen would have disappeared at the same time as Skeklach.
