I love that it's a pun, I solved at the sight of the teeth.

Awesome video as always. Changing the puzzle with a riddle to figure out the animals is a really solid idea. I might use this in my in person game with that.

If you want to increase difficulty, then, absolutely. Riddles are a great way to do that. Removing the clue/poem in the journal would be another way. Thank you for the comment. Guess you won't be seeing this puzzle in the one shot, lol.

And here I was googling facts about the Teeth of Wolfs, Spider, Bats and Snakes LOL I like the "easier" solution :) An idea that also popped in my mind was having numbered keys 1-9...and you are allowed to use the same key more then once... Bat - B=8 Wolf - W=3 Snake - S=5 same for spider... Probably a little more complex but I always enjoy making things harder LOL Nice job on presenting the puzzle! I am sure I will use it in the future! ^^

Making a guess before the end. The teeth are numbers of letters in the animal names.

@AllisonIsLivid

I was JUST thinking that! This puzzle could have so many neat twists put in it if you just change the base assumption that the answer is in English/Common!
@WallyDM
@WallyDM 3 года назад
Ah yes, that is one of the problems with Tasha's Cauldron. So many of the puzzles are English language dependent. The good thing about this one, is that you can adjust it to your native language with only a few tweaks. Glad you can use this in your game. Cheers!

I figured this out the second it showed the keys. Obviously, as Wally mentions, specifying there's a different number of teeth on each key is handing the answer to your players, but I suppose it could be used as a clue if your PCs are just not quite getting it. Though, as a DM, if a party is unable to resolve this puzzle without that clue, I'd probably modify encounters going forward to avoid puzzles (unless the PCs enjoyed themselves, of course). I feel the poem further drills the answer home for the dense, so I might want to change that somewhat. In Tasha's defense, this puzzle is listed as Easy. I'd like to note that you can customize this in any way you see fit, as long as your PCs can conclude the answer. Anything will do if it has the same number of letters. If it doesn't have the same number of letters, that's okay, too. Just make a different handout that shows keys with teeth equal to the number of letters in the words you've chosen. One suggestion I saw for wolf was As the river travels, I go the opposite (Flow backwards = Wolf) To maintain that theme, you could use Warts - Straw, Dog - God, Devil - Lived, Drawer - Reward, Rats - Star, etc. Those are just my ideas on how I'd customize this so it'd be something my PCs had never seen the exact same puzzle before. Note: When I opened up my Tasha's to look up this puzzle, the page I opened to as an estimation was the Skeleton Keys handout ^_^ Edit: Changed "letters" to "number of letters" for clarity.
@WallyDM
@WallyDM 3 года назад
Well done with all of these fantastic ideas! I really enjoyed reading through these and I like how you gave some pointers for adjusting difficulty. The puzzle, "as is", would be one I would recommend to beginner puzzle-solvers and new DMs... stepping up the difficulty, I would definitely take away the poem/journal. Great feedback, I think I will pin this comment for the video.

Nice puzzle. I would personally spring the trap when all of they keys are put in and summon one of each monster. This way the key placement's can't be forced as easily. As is, you can just put random keys in to random holes and end up summoning so few enemies that they would only pose a danger to a extremely low level party.
@StupidButCunning
@StupidButCunning 3 года назад
If you want to up the difficulty, you can always change the monsters that are summoned. Maybe instead of bats, use gargoyles or any variety of bat-like demon/devil. Instead of snakes, iron cobra or naga or Yuann-Ti or behir. Instead of spiders, choldrith or kruthik or retriever or drider. Instead of wolves, werewolves or shoosuva.
@typoko
@typoko 3 года назад
@@StupidButCunning Rather than difficulty of the monsters, the puzzle itself is too easy without trying to solve it and instead just put random keys in to the holes. When two of the four keys have been put in to correct keyholes, the puzzle has basically been solved.
@WallyDM
@WallyDM 3 года назад
This is a great point @typoko. If you are running for experienced players, this puzzle definitely needs to be toughened up a bit to use. But, "as is", this does make a nice introduction to puzzles for new players. Cheers Typoko! Thank you for the comment. :-)

Nice video and channel! I find language-specific puzzles a bit weird in D&D -- so, Common has the same words as English? Or all words in Common have the same number of letters as in English, by chance? I know that's overly literal, but it takes me out of it a bit. I think the general idea is cool though, and will use it with number of legs (or maybe eyes?) instead of number of letters.
@WallyDM
@WallyDM 3 года назад
Those are definitely some great ideas to adjust the puzzle. In fact, I have some older puzzle videos that run along those lines. One where you count legs (with a red herring that they are zodiac symbols) and another where you count eyes. But yeah... language, Common, English, and alphabets are all weird in D&D. I always say Common and English are one-the-same, but puzzles like this do make it hard to translate into other languages. Great feedback! And, oh... welcome to the channel. Great to have ya aboard!

Hated the Riddle, because our Gamemaster gave us the Riddle without the Verse to make it more difficult and no Skillchecks for Help. While i can appreciate the effort, there's too many other options. Which side the Icon is on, how many Legs (or none) the Animals have, the Names, the Spaces in between, Atributing the Animals to the Seasons... Give people a modified Poem, not none.

Wowzers, I am sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with this puzzle. But, I agree 100%. You can't hold back on the clues and hints needed for the puzzles from Tasha's Cauldron. They are hard enough "as is". Without them, the puzzles are nearly unsolvable.

Agreed. This is probably too easy for experienced players. But, "as is", this does make a decent encounter to introduce new players to puzzles if they have never encountered one before. Cheers Bogue!
