In this video Chris Staub is back to discuss all aspects of power management onboard, including both the production and the consumption. We identify all the big power consumers and how fast we can recharge our battery bank. There's a lot to consider when running the systems on a boat like this and we are happy to give you an insight into the process.

Redundancy is something you have taken into consideration. Well done.

Yes, and I think we have taken it to a different level as the genset and engine impellers are the same size.

You have one amazing and complex electrical system on your yacht. Can’t wait to see the next video. I’m sure you will learn to diversify your load requirements as you become familiar with everything which means you won’t have to charge those batteries so hard. Thanks for a great video.

It's interesting listening to how Chris describes the inverter loads over Peak RMS, ( when loads are increased during start-up, ovens reaching temperature, AC Compressors first kicking in, Refrigeration Compressor spiking.) How the totality of the max-capacity has to be engineered to withstand those peak values when all of those systems run and much lower idling rates. I would love to see the breaker panels and the various amperage limits associated with each system.

Sean, The energy options to run all these systems is impressive. It will be really nice to see in say about a year what kinks resulted or if its all smooth sailing with little issues. Thank you again for sharing. One thought would try to avoid anywhere in season there is a lot of lightning! A fortune to repair all those systems.
@sketchtosea3750
@sketchtosea3750 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for the comment. We do have a dintecco lightning suppression system onboard and have been through quite a few storms here. When we were on the hard the boat next to us was hit. This is one of those items that you will never know if it works or not.

The heat coming from AC units should heat any water needed. So many ways to make systems more eco friendly. Heat pumps to cool and heat. If hybrid would have been used for engines when sailing regen could keep batteries full.
@sketchtosea3750
@sketchtosea3750 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for the comment. The AC heat that you mention would not be enough for the hotel loads. We also would have had to install a closed fresh water loop in order for this to be an option. We do have a heat exchanger for the engine and genset exhaust to heat the domestic hot water. Regen while under sail would have meant a very different set up, and doesn't help us at anchor. The solar output satisfies the electrical needs while sailing.

Thank you for the comment. It is definately on the large side of the spectrum for a sail yacht. A motor yacht of this size would easily have 300KWH of power.

Nice to see that you built in a bunch of redundancy. That boat should be able to run completely autonomously when not under a heavy load. You will only be starting the gen-sets when you have guests. Can't wait to see the performance numbers you get out of some of that wind you are getting there. And please include the load numbers on the rigging.
@sketchtosea3750
@sketchtosea3750 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for your repeated thoughtful comments. That is the plan. When the boat is on charter or guests are here we "should" be capable of doing anything we want. We are still working through a few gremlins in the systems, but that is what trials are all about.

Another great episode Sean, I know you are planning on having some crew including a captain, Just wondering if you are planning on having one of the crew double as an engineer - obviously you are familiar with all of the systems but imagine you may need someone else very well versed for charters etc. Can this be a secondary function of the captain or will you perhaps train a first mate or bosun up as well?
@sketchtosea3750
@sketchtosea3750 9 месяцев назад
Good question... Chris is actually leaving China with the boat. We will be bringing on an additional crew member in the next few months. I personally enjoy understanding these systems and Dave our captain does as well. The additional crew will have the opportunity to learn from the originals on board.

Why use Mastervolt over Victron ? Victron does have much larger inverter chargers that can be run in the same configuration. Interested in the decision tree.
@sketchtosea3750
@sketchtosea3750 9 месяцев назад
Mastervolt is under the umbrella of Navico group, which is the same as our other hardware CZone and B&G. CZone & Mastervolt have been integrated systems for over a decade so there are advantages with what can be done with the system as a whole. Victron & Mastervolt make similar products, deciding between them often depends on the bigger picture of the system being designed. Check out this weeks episode to see some of these benefits.

Interesting, yard brand loyalty has trumpet known reliability and efficiency. I assume this decision has also limited you to 24v vs 48v for such big loads.

Is the boat set up for regeneration off the props/shaft-drive when you are underway? Unrelated, do A/C units and other draws that have high peak loads require soft-starts or is that all handled by the inverters?
@sketchtosea3750
@sketchtosea3750 9 месяцев назад
The boat is not set up for regeneration. It was designed differently from the start. While sailing our solar can provide for us.
@jesperandersen260

hi S t S It's a really nice catamaran you've made yourself. Now you can talk about energy consumption and that you get energy from the sun. How is it that you almost never see smaller wind turbines, whether it is the horizontal or the vertical turbines, which can actually deliver power 24/7, which today are quite efficient in relation to their size? Jesper Denmark
@BillyReed68
@BillyReed68 9 месяцев назад
Ever tried to sleep with a wind turbine running in your head? I mean the ones designed for sailboats. I can't sleep with them running on other peoples' boats let alone on my stern section. Best part of the Cat life is that you can moor the boat where other boats can't go, therefore, no halyards slapping masts, no wind turbines running, just peace and quiet. NOT TO MENTION they are just not that efficient. To make a long story short. The industry sold us a bill of goods and we, the consumers, bought it.
@sketchtosea3750
@sketchtosea3750 9 месяцев назад
@BillyReeed68 addressed this well in his response. Given the size of this boat it could have been an option, but at the end of the day it just did not make sense with how we have allowed the boom to swing. We choose maneuverability and comfort in that aspect.
