Good review but I still think there are some things that really should be improved in a future version: 1 - the legs angle should have an adjustable angle not fixed in 2 positions. 2 - a version with a rotating dock (like in animation tables) 3 - a rubberized outer rim to help surface grip 4 - a locking mechanism for the iPad allowing a real use of the handle

being an industrial designer when i first saw what first gen ipad can do with pencil i started immediately making plans of doing this kind of support tablet for ipad with my studio. But then some things changed, more projects came by and i almost forgot this idea. Now i finally see some true artist give a shot of thing that we all draftsmen need for ipad. High five!

Picked one of these up a few months ago and I absolutely love it!!! Definitely worth it! I suggest getting the bundle with the travel bag just so you can keep all of your supplies (glove,pencil grip,headphones,charging cables, etc.. ) together tho... I learned the hard way and got the bag separate. I was worried about the legs not being strong enough and that they would wobble under my weight (240 pound dude hunched over on this thing), but the legs are very sturdy once they are in position and I’ve had no wobble issues in both landscape and portrait. I did like josh said and tried the “hang it over my cintiq” thing and that works great! I haven’t looked back. The best part is that you can draw for hours and it really helps reduce and even eliminate the pain in your neck, arms, and back. Sorry i sound like a commercial, but I was just really impressed with this thing.

So glad I did a search this morning. I saw this yesterday and thought about going DIY but after watching this I decided to save myself the work and snag one. I wasn’t sure after looking at their website but your review answered all of my questions and more. Quick shout out to your videos in general: Love them! You do such a great job on so many facets of digital art. Yours is one of the names I will actually add to my searches just in case I overlooked one in your channel. Keep up the great work, both on and off RU-vid!

@ergojosh the big square hole in the back was supposed to be where the different mounting options went. Example: you clip in a square piece that has VESA mount holes pre drilled in it so that you can mount the sketchboard to an ergo arm or tv mount. I think there was a tabletop stand that gave you the ability to do more than just the one angle. Idk if that was scrapped or if it's coming later on down the line. But it would be neat to have the full drawing tablet on an ergoarm experience while you are at the desk and then just pop off of the arm mount to take it with you.

@@Honey-tb7is The Apple Pencil is not overpriced. Far from. I see people making this comment too often. Wacom's Pro Pen 2 is more than $100. Even the Grip Pen, whose tech is over a decade old, costs around $80. Apple Pencil's pricing is great, not only comparing to Wacom, but also considering that there is no competition; no other stylus for the iPad matches its performance. You're either poor, unemployed, an Apple hater, or not an iPad owner.

@@lillycastitatis6807 100 is still a lot to pay for a _pen_ especially with most of the base iPads starting at around 500 dollars,I have a Samsung tablet and it came with a really good stylus. Its an opinion,but yes it is overpriced for some people,because they can't afford it,and you shouldn't just call someone poor or unemployed for saying that in their opinion somethings overpriced, you're either rich or ignorant

Same. I had this in the chart ready to purchase, but those legs dont look like they will last a professional artist workflow. I’ll wait for them to innovate the second version with better legs and more tilt variation. Big bummer since a bordered surface is hard to find for the iPad Pro.

Just got mine, too and love it. I WISH that the pencil holder at 1 o'clock also charged the pencil AND if there was more of a lazy-susan workability to it... I am also using mine on top of an old 24 inch monitor connected to an ergotron arm. I might strap it on the monitor w/ two large rubber bands that DO NOT touch the iPad in any way Thanks again for this - Josh.

Seems like a good idea. Something that would make it a great idea is to solve 2 problems at once: magnetic 🧲 charging like the iPad Pro magic keyboards. This would allow the ipad not to fall out so easily, also to get rid of the wire running through the the board.

I agree, this thing is amazing. As for the cost, I feel the design effort is where a lot of the cost comes from. For a first gen, this thing is pretty functional. Really glad there were folks that were able to take the time, come up with the concept, refine it, get a manufacturer, take orders, test the pre-production ones, and make it happen. I really would like a wooden one! I would say this is as old for TJ he Apple Pencil as the magic keyboard is for typing on the ipad.

When my sketch board pro came in the package was so badly damaged that you can see the product itself without opening the box. Luckily, it wasn't damaged. I don't know if I'm missing anything besides the manual.

The hole serves the Purpose as to not create a vacuum when the iPad is pushed in! Easier to get out

Just watched the review trying to get a feel for some iPad products. It looks like it may be made of plastic, which is probably why it’s more expensive. In 2018, one of the hurricanes (I believe it was Florence) wiped out one of the biggest manufacturers of plastic resin. Since then we have been in a plastic shortage, and companies outside of major players have had a harder time getting materials. Even the biggest places don’t know where there next batch of material will come from. Anyway, thanks for your videos. I always learn a ton.

Hi Josh, thanks for this but what I'm wondering is if you can charge the pencil if it has a silicone sleeve. Not like the cushion you use, but the kind that covers the whole pencil that's about 1/16" thick.

@ergojosh, thank you so much for this thorough review. I really appreciate it. I wonder if you could comment on how comfortable or uncomfortable it feels if you were to use it with one side resting on your lap and the back resting on the desk, which is how I usually sit with a drawing board, because I have a super short torso. Also, I'm wondering about how it does if one is lying on a couch or on a bed resting it against bent knees. I hear that it weighs something like 5 pounds, so I'm imagining that the weight might make those common ways of using an ipad/drawing board prohibitive. That's what's given me pause about buying one. I really want something like this that will support me in using my ipad like that.

If not for ventilation, then the big cut out in the middle is probably for saving weight and material cost. Btw, they should have make some kind of cable management so we can carry whole cable and adapter along...

I got in on Kickstart , December of 2019 and got mine 2 weeks ago. I like keeping the legs in and leaning the bottom on my lap and resting the back against the edge of my desk. I also used it for reportage drawing when the Capital was being stormed and rested it on my lap sitting on the sofa, while watching the events on CNN. The only negative I see is that I don't like that I have to take it in and out of it's case to mount it in the sketchboard pro.

The only standout thing to me is plugging the cable in through it but I don’t think I’ll buy one 🤨 There are plenty of good reasonably priced stands that could work just as well. Great review though!

I got mine this week and I love the thing, if you draw a lot it's great. Sellers on eBay have been popping up, I'd check there if you still wanted something close to that backer price. I saw some alright listings. Didn't see if they sold yet or not as I already have one.

I just got mine! It's pretty good, I think the only issue I had was the fit of the charging cable but I have an aftermarket one. If you want it cheaper, there's sellers on eBay selling new ones for a bit cheaper than $120!

Uhm... I have been searching for a similar device and only found overpriced gadgets. This looks so janky made out of plastic with wobbly legs. I made myself an Ipad stand out of wood and covered it in alcantara. I made it to the measurements and angle that fit me best. Total material cost is around 30-40$. Mainly because of the alcantara. I would recommend a DIY solution if you are able to work with wood.

Josh, is it just the camera or do you have this at more of a 90 degree angle? I'm doing my review and I feel like I have to really hunch over because of the size of the bezel. There is no wau I can sit back, I am over extended trying to get to the iPad.

As a left-handed person, I feel left out with the Apple Pencil's stand part :'C But I don't mind it - watching your review I'm happy I didn't get it! The cable management is pretty horrible and it still keeps iPad too low for my liking. Thanks for making this video, I saved money ♥

Ergo josh. If i was you i would just buy a cheap ipad pro magnetic case for about 20 dollars. The case is super thin. Cut it down the middle and insert/glue the back part of the case which holds the magnets inside the sketchboard pro. Now you have a magnetic holder for the ipad inside the sketchboard pro. Sorry for the long advise. :)

for the price of an ipad plus the pen plus the board, its cheaper to buy a cintiq at that point and it will out perform

I still wish Apple would have kept the original 2017 size of the 12.9 inch and increased the screen size up to 13.x inch. I really would like a larger ipad, maybe not a 15,6 inch but a 14 inch. It would be so nice and expensive probably. This thing, not worth it. Overpriced as everything apple related.

Tbh I dont see much use for this item. It pretty much just gives you more surface area to draw on the ipad. I dont think its worth 120$

While I agree the price is on the high side for the materials used, the crazy negative comments here are kinda surprising. It's not that difficult to imagine how much more useful an iPad Pro would be without your hand taking up 30-40% of the screen. Suddenly your iPad Pro feels more like your 16" CIntiq. As for other solutions like laptop stands, if it's not a perfectly flush surface, it's not at all comparable to this for someone who draws for 8+ hours a day.

Nice but for me it don't worth the price. I personally use a flat frog pluche and i put on it a cardboard painting canvas and then the Ipad, I use my legs to adjust the inclination xD

If you can't spend $120 on a piece of plastic, laptop stands work too. I've been using the laptop stand from IKEA, it does what this thing does and only cost about seven bucks.

Is it necessary to have a different model depending on which version of the iPad you have (given that it’s the same size?) I currently have the first gen 12.9 inch (or whatever the one with the original Apple Pencil is) but one day I may want to upgrade to the newer iPad. Would I have to get a new sketch board? Sorry if you mention this, I did watch the full review but I watch at 1.5 speed and I’m super adhd and multitasking so I may have missed a few parts lol
