In 2007 I started this sketchbook to copy master works in search of my inner voice. My technique has been influence by the amount of practice I have done. The painting in this sketchbook tour are made with Oils and the drawings using a variety of dry mediums.

I just want to say, even though I'm on a different continent and I have never meet you, you have helped me time and time again. Even though I have picked up a lot of technique from your videos there is something even more important to me that you help me with almost daily. I want to let you know what that is. Due to my personal circumstances I am not able to take part in any formal training and I am having to do my best studying alone. Getting information from books and videos and trying as best I can to follow the same kind of process of learning as you have talked about. I don't have any artist friends I can talk to either so it can be a very lonely process which can often bring with it a huge amount of self doubt and frustration. But I battle on. Every time I feel that it's hopeless and I'll never be able to do the kind of work I dream of, or when I start to believe that I've set my goals too high and I'm not capable of reaching the standard I want, it has been you that has kept me going. I think of you and your drive and willingness to always learn and keep putting in the hours of hard work and I am always inspired and filled with the fire to keep at it. You are like a boxing coach always sitting in the corner of my studio telling me I can do it and keeping me fighting my doubts. I just want to say thank you and let you know that me and I'm sure many other people like me are getting so much from what you do. So, thank you. Much love. Glenn. In my little studio in England.

Yes! I recently started watching his videos. I used to avoid them bc I found him to be intimidating. But I decided to just give it a shot and now I want to watch all his videos lol. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Battle on we will grow and continue learning no matter what!! ❤😊🎨🎨🎨

@@sunnystardust1008 thanks for the lovely message. Its nice to know it's not just me. 😊 I think cesar seems to be a really lovely guy. You can just tell he has a big heart and I love the fact he has no arrogance in him. I could forgive him having a big head if he did but he seems so humble and just an all round good guy. His work, well I just love it. Nice to hear from you and I hope we can talk again. X g.

Glenn in England, Hi from Arabia, I dont know your age, our your goal, but if you are like me doing it for hobby, yet very serious about, and excited about it, you should be having fun, I do, i started 2 years ago, drawing, and practicing an hour or 2 a day, sometimes 4 hours, sometimes a weak without doing it .. if I get tired, i just do fundmental, line , circles, ovals etc... while watching other interesting vidoes or TV... then pick it up again, I believe the journey, yes journey , or call me a dreamer a voyage in the wonderful art, or history in pictures, is nice ,dreamy and elegant activity and meditative too.If I need a motivation a lot it means that such an activity is not for me, or at best not a serious hobby.. sometimes we may like the fundmental thing about say archeology, and when we do that we shift our interest somewhere else, that in itslef is not wrong, we dont have same level of passion for each filed we have interests in. If you love art, work at it for yourself, even many part of my family dont know I draw them from memory and in their younger ages because I left home for long time, 2 saw them were shoked to know I draw... and one day if you feel to you can share .. but it is for self... it is fun, the journey itself is pleasure ... and usually if it so you get somewhere. I saw your channel seems very interesting quiet no strong music.. and generous in time between a painting and the next.. lovely thanks too for your effort, we can share knowledge and thought.. take care

I find myself weeping when I look at such a talented artist who is so young. You are modern, yet ancient. Unlike so many young people, you actually understand that things don't just fall out of Instagram. You work hard and you work the right way...you work to understand and to appreciate. You are an inspiration to this old woman. Thank you, Cesar Santos.

I started painting in my sketchbooks a long long time ago..just seemed like nice way to keep all my studies together. I never knew this was a thing :)!! ..because when i started painting I knew nothing about art..just for fun since i was a kid. With no formal training, somehow I drifted into graphic design, then in the 90s this crazy new thing called the Internet happened and I got involved with that. I'm 54 now, retired and still love painting and sketching more than ever. Very nice work Cesar. Liked and Subbed

Hola Amigo Cesar Santos, yo soy de las islas FIlipinas. Yo no hablo Espanol bien. The reason why I am writing you a message is that I just wanted to share my experience, and also to thank you for your video and your philosophy that inspires me as an artist as well. As a matter of fact, I am also an Artist but I am artist comics illustrator, animator and industrial designer. My dream is in fact, to meet you in person, I am older than you Cesar, but you did inspires me with your art, your style of classical approach of painting. I also studied in Moscow Industrial Design School (Escuela Superior de Diseno Industrial named after Stroganov en Moscu, la URSS- desde 1985 hasta 1993 anos. Though I studied design, but we never paid attention too much in Human figure drawing and classical painting at the same time, until i graduated, and when I dived into a job,,i started learning myself, digged deeper search for my own style, Though I was a comics artist before I left the Philippines in September of 1985, I was not that skillful enough and to these date. I became cartoonist animator in United Arab Emirates but not too strong... What I mean, these days, I already turned 53 last August 2018 and going to be 54 this year, I started reviving my desire to do visual arts, and certainly, as I go online searching for the masters, and then that is the reason I found you...Also I wish to share to you that I got some Cuban friends who studied with me in Stroganov Art School in Moscow, Russia, his name is Lizardo Ochoa, for what I remember he did monumental painting,, Nidia Fernandez, Nora Fuentes and Gabriel who did INterior Design forgot his apellido. We in fact, all speak fluently in Russian. Becaus enthat isour medium of communication in USSR that time. Well, its too interesting to watch your video about drawing and painting your classical approach really inspires me...and besides, Philippines is also a tropical countru like Cuba, and we both had the same destiny when AMerican ceded our country from Spain during the 1898 SPanish AMerican War...that is when the Treaty of Paris signed in 1898,,and Philippines was bought for 20 million dollars by the US from Spain...and same thing happened to Puerto Rico, Cuba and Guam in Marianas Islands in the Pacific, How I wish to meet you in person one day....Your avid fan...Your uncle form the Philippines my name is Manolito M Agustin Good Job!

So for the longest time I avoided your videos bc man you intimidate me with some things you show. And then I watched an interview with Proko who i LOVE and then I got hooked. I knew you had a lot of experience but I thought you were too " up there " for me bc I did not go to art school not do I want to. And there are people who think you are worth nothing unless you went to art school. I figure if you have the time but not the money then.... Learn your SELF it's a passion right? So figure it out. And that's what I'm doing and I'm glad I watched and now I want to see all your videos at once lol Bc wow. Thank you Thank you so much. The sketch and painting of your wife is so soft and sweet appearing. Very delicate. She's beautiful! And your work is what I aspire to before I kick the bucket lol. My family is also from Cuba and we have several artists in our Santos gang. Keep up the passion and the learning!!

Im also studying the Pre-Raphaelites thanks to a video you did a few months ago. You have been of great value to me for the last couple of years and I can't wait to see where you'll be a few years from now and what else I'll learn from you. And since you mentioned it, how do you keep track of the paintings you've sold? Do you make prints? Take pictures? Just keep the name? Saludos maestro, que este bien.

I have no idea why it just now occurred to me that I could keep a sketch book just for fun stuff I like to draw, as opposed to work I wanted to do. The idea of doing something just for fun somehow that concept takes the procrastination off the table. Don't know if that was the intent, but it's one of the first messages I got from this. THANKS!

Hello Cesar, i like the drawing at 4:10 very much. Your figures and portrairs have this unique kind of realistic shading into them. It looks fuzzy and dotted. Is that because of the paper material of your sketchbooks or is it a tecnique? Can you please share how and with what pencils you can achieve this shading? Also what kind of paper are those sketchbooks made of? Thanks! I hope you can see this comment. It is really important to me.

Hey Cesar! First of all, I really enjoy the exploration of your older drawings and the insight you give for each piece! I learned so much from your videos! I have an advice for you... Maybe it's little bit much to ask because of editing inconvenience but it's hard to search for the artist with a foreign sounding name - so maybe writing the full name of the artist somewhere on the screen would be a good fit, so diligent students can look up the artist you were once copying :D

Hi Cesar .. What about practicing ?! I mean do you practice gesture drawing in your sketchbook or use a cheaper paper for that ?! The same question about anatomy studies ? And what do you carry everywhere you go for sketching ?? I usually take my sketchbook in my hand with one mechanical pencil in it or on my pocket but I find my self need to use eraser and different materials like charcoal and Sanguine pencils so I decided to buy a bag big enough to take my A4 sketchbook and my 12 pieces Faber-Castell monochrome set with two erasers and a craft knife and some pens but after some complaints from friends I think this is too much to take everywhere everyday. . So what you think ? Is that normal ?!

I created a storm of crap, when I posted to others that I do not sketch, never have. Was never really taught to sketch, I use my sketchbook for concepts only. People find this a lie or unbelievable, but why should we function the same??? I don’t sit and do sketches of the things around me, unless it will inform my concept drawing, mostly I use photos. Does anyone else not sketch?
@RS-ep2ry
@RS-ep2ry 5 лет назад
Connie Wonnie It’s not about functioning the same, it’s about improving your skills as an artist while still having fun and trying out new things.
@connie1wilson
@connie1wilson 5 лет назад
R S - It may be fun for you, to sketch random stuff, but why would it be fun for me? I find sketches do not improve my skills, but longer studies do. I do these, but I find quick sketches do not help me observe so much, but like I said it seems to be about the fact that people do not believe I could not use a sketch book to sketch random things daily. Like is said I sketch for my concepts, but sketching for sketching sake, no. I am a long study girl, I sketch my composition and make a long study for prep for my paintings.
@RS-ep2ry
@RS-ep2ry 5 лет назад
Connie Wonnie It is undeniable that sketching helps you improve your art in every way. It has been proven over and over that artists who breeze through sketchbooks improve at a MUCH faster rate than people who only do polished pieces, because at the end of the day, quantity is favorable over quality in art (they should be somewhat balanced nonetheless, but woth an emphasis on quantity). Sure, observational sketching may not be fun to everyone (and I’m pretty sure that it isn’t to most people when they start keeping sketchbooks), but I’m sure that you could find a way to make it fun (or at least entertaining) for you, and after you build a habit of it it doesn’t even matter whether it’s fun or not anymore. You need to put in some effort and care more about the learning than the entertainment if you want to improve your art.
@connie1wilson
@connie1wilson 5 лет назад
R S - See you are trying to encourage me to do something that everyone else does, because it works for most people, maybe this is just my thing, and that is how I work??? BTW, I am a curious person, as I have come to realise, I do not enjoy the “doing” of things, but enjoy the reward at the end of completion, and I am someone who believes if a job is worth doing, it is worthy doing well. So there is no entertainment for me, because I am learning my skills and formulating my techniques. Like I said we are all different.
