I just wrote "Progress is more important than perfection" in huge letters in the front page of my sketchbook. I started drawing in pen about a year ago, because the idea of being able to draw has always excited me, but I'd only ever tried using pencil. I have a horrible habit of re-doing everything 10-15 times, and would usually barely make it beyond having a few lines on the page, due to constantly erasing what I'd drawn. Drawing with pen makes me think about what I'm going to do, and after it's done, I have to commit to it. You can't erase what you've done, so if you make a mistake you just have to keep going around it and improvise. Removing the crutch of feeling like every line had to be perfect is what let me actually enjoy sketching for the first time in my life, and I'm so glad it did.

Yes! Couldn't agree more with everything you said in the video! I used to sketch with pencil back then but since a year ago, I challenged myself to sketch with ballpoint pen instead and boy oh boy do I looovvveee that feeling of the scratchiness every time you draw a line on the paper. I've been sketching with pens ever since. I find the results of sketching with ballpoint pen really attractive, too. Plus they're crazy cheap, I bought a pack of 8 ballpoint pens for just a dollar, and they'll last you like forever! But I still got a lot to learn regarding those line weights, so thank you for the tips!

I started pen drawing recently (getting serious about drawing in general relatively recently) because it makes me not over think anything. I just go for it. I had no idea that pen drawing was such a thing. The book and this channel have been invaluable in this journey. Speaking of cheap, I also love that some of the cheapest pens do allow for better control and value ranges than some expensive ones too.

david bryan I just bought a set of bic cristal 1.6 mm ball for $1.99. I like ball points a lot. All the young kids want markers because it’s the cool thing for manga but I don’t think that they will learn values. 🤷‍♀️
@chrisbutters4344

The meditation part is true too. I meant when I started with pencil, I was over thinking everything whereas when I tried with the pen, I would just draw because erasing and blending weren't an option anyway. My favorite drawing pen so far actually is actually BIC. I started with Energel which is a lot more expensive, but does mostly bold lines. The BIG pens have an amazing range of values and you can get them at the dollar store or just laying around too. :D

I use ballpoint pen mainly because it is the cheapest and most readily-available inking instrument. I usually start my drawings with pencil. I make the initial line work with pencil , and then i retrace my drawings' pencil lines with ballpoint pen.

I've been doing more of this lately. Going for straight drawing with a ballpoint or gel pen without pencil guides, working without the net as it were. It's a great exercise especially as I've been experimenting with ways to speed up my drawing processes, and it forces me into a different decision set when I'm starting on a sketch in the book.

I never know what to say because you have became one of the most important tools and persons in my journey to learning and improving my drawing. I have tried to use a ballpoint pen haha ugggg so difficult but being left handed I find I don't drag thru the ink like pencil unless its a crappy boogery pen. I have started to draw (practice) daily and wanted to thank you once more for all you have taught me and helped me to overcome. peace and joy always Effie (aka) Rainey.

i like to be able to see my construction lines, so that i can later look back and see how i constructed my drawing. With pencil, the lines are not permanent, they will smudge. So i like to use a not too darkly colored ballpoint pen to sketch (like in pink, red, or turquoise) and then go over that with a black ballpoint pen to do the finished line art. I dont do that every time, only occasionally. But its nice to see how i used to construct my drawings years ago. Also ballpoint pens are an inexpensive way to make waterproof drawings. You can safely lay some watercolors on top of a ballpoint pen sketch.
@elsagrace3893
@elsagrace3893 5 лет назад
Mursku Xenos Uniballs are most waterproof. Uniball signo vision is totally waterproof. I like the effect of a little bleed from the non waterproof pens like Pilot.
@puppeli
@puppeli 5 лет назад
yeah i know. What i meant was that cheap ballpoint pens. Even the ones that normally cost 20 to 25 cents, will also be waterproof. Its only when you upgrade to the gel pens that you will see water soluble inks. Like a few years back, my local grocery store had ballpoint pens for sale. They were just the ordinary bic crystal's, but they sold for €1 for a pack of 8. I must have bought a few hundred ballpoint pens. For example heres a little ballpoint pen sketch i colored with watercolor. Its on a cheap copy paper, and i hadnt used watercolors in months. So its nothing to brag about. *But* you can see that you can use watercolors to color your ballpoint sketches. imgur.com/0RTAlMR (didnt know what to draw, so i defaulted to drawing a nude chick... so maybe NSFW?)

Wish you did more on here with the ball point pen. While it is a great sketching medium it also can be a great fine art medium. There is an artist Linda Newman Boughton who does some really cool landscapes in ball point pen. You can see them online. Somehow her finished pieces appear to have no line work. Just beautiful rich color. I’m curious how she accomplishes it and was wondering if you can share with us how to take ballpoint pens to that level of art

Since yesterday I am looking for a simple method to draw another color then black in line art. Today I found answer in Alphonso drawings: red ball point pen. Someone could think: stupid problem, but for me it was real big problem. In my modification it will be red gel ball point pen and water, because I need shadows on flowers. Thank you for the hint in the red drawing.

Ayye I can order your second book now because it's on Bookdepository. I don't know whose doing it was but I'll have to order it with more JoJo's books, hee. Thank you. I sketch in pencil a lot because it's all I could use for a while, but I really never used erasers. The sketchbook I started using a couple years back was so bad, you couldn't even really erase without being finicky, because the paper was too weak and it made it crease easily. :') And I only used pencil in it because anything else would bleed. I just had the one sketchbook back then. But I'm sure the feel of ballpoint is different. I'll try adding one to my pencilcase soon, only just started sketching with pen on its own, really.

Whats the best kind paper for ballpoint pen drawings? Really smooth or glossy ones seem to work well so far.
@CaptainWumbo
@CaptainWumbo 5 лет назад
ApronPatron You're right, in general smoother papers are better for pen. It's not too important with ballpoint because there's no tines to get fibers caught in, and it's not delicate, and it's not going to bleed like a liquid ink would. But still, it will feel nicer to use smooth paper and your lines won't betray the texture of the paper.

@@alphonsodunn I have read that since ballpoint is non archival...it will fade over time...even some ballpoint inks that claim to be archival...still will fade even if you frame them under archival glass. So what do artist do that make really realistic renderings using a ballpoint? Make prints of their work and keep the original in a drawer somewhere? I love it as a drawing tool but the ink fading in a short amount of time is a real bummer. Thank you sir!

Based on your expertise with pen and ink, would u say that for an absolute beginner, learning to draw/hatch/cross-hatch, a simple #2 pencil and a printer paper/recycled paper would suffice ? And then move to fountain pen and bottled ink cause it will help eliminate plastic waste of ballpoint and other fine liner pens ? { not denying the feel of ballpoint pens or the convenience of other pens ........but, for an absolute beginner......}
