DWGs and DXFs are great, but what do you do when you need to import an image to use as a reference for a drawing? This video covers the ins and out of using image files as reference for architectural modeling.

THANK YOU, finally my ageing brain is beginning to understand some of the finer points of sketchup. Nice job on the video, concise and easy to follow . many thanks

Paul, I selected my image, made it a group, used tape measure, obtained the measurement, then, as you suggested, I typed in the actual dimension, and then the screen asked If I wanted to resize, and I said "yes." It worked as you said. Thanks for a timely and helpful response. Good day!

Excellent video. Clear, precise and extremely helpful. I've watched many other videos on the same topic and this one is by far the best.

Same comment as Franz G below, double click into group of ref line and pdf, tape measure on ref line, tab into dimension box (or start typing directly with new dimension), hit enter, and nothing. New guideline is created is only effect. MacBook Pro. Is it a keyboard issue?
@slterry01

Should mention that newer versions of SU - to measure the active group dimension - take tape measure and hold over start point, then hit CTRL to remove the (+); then click on start and end points; enter or type in the desired measurement in the right corner bottom of screen 'LENGTH WINDOW BOX'; hit ENTER and a query box comes up asking if you want to resize to that new dimension.

Spent a few hours just last week fighting to get a PDF "useable" so THANKS VERY MUCH. Just what I need....but I echo the post below too regards screen size and view ability. Still grateful as heck tho!!!

Solution to non-action on click (at least on my MacBookPro): 1, group ref line and pdf. 2, select tape measure tool, 3, hold down "option" with the tape measure tool so that a guide line is not drawn when taking the dimension (easy to see on icon of tape measure, when key shaped symbol below tape measure icon is not present then you can proceed with this method), 4, measure line, 5, tab into dimension box or start typing the new dimension, 6, you will see a line of text in the lower left telling you to type in new dimension although you just typed in the new dimension, so type in the new dimension over the dimension you just typed in and hit enter, 7, then you get the magic dialog box asking you to re-size. Summary: THE TRICK IS TO HOLD DOWN THE OPTION KEY WHEN SELECTING THE TAPE MEASURE TOOL. if you are seeing a guideline icon under the tape measure tool then you should hold down the option key when using the tape measure tool so the software isn't confused, then you have to enter the new dimension, then watch the dialog box on lower left, then tab into dimension box again and re-type the new dimension. This solution brought to you by Caffeine, use it for all your software needs. Results may vary with DeCaf.

Hi Aaron, when I draw the line, it snaps to a grid and won't let me draw a line to match an actual wall. After making the group and then using the tape measure I have a similar issue and when I type in the correct measurement and press enter I don't get the resize message. Any tips.

Mac version (downloaded 2 weeks ago), doesn't prompt to resize at 2:32, any clue how to make it work at 2:32, so how do you resize it super easy like this when that feature is missing? Also, it seems that tools are missing in the Mac Version (Rectangle is it, no cornered Rectangles etc as shown in other videos) - why not make the interface exactly the same??? I'm about to dump using this program - still on the 30 day trial. I can only get about so upset with a program before I quit using it.

When you use the tape measure it is unclear how you enter the dimensions and connect that to the line. When I do it I get a black dotted line from the tape measure that is the dimension I want but the line and drawing are unaffected.

I love this! This is really helpful. I'm new to SketchUp and struggled to get the right blueprint size using Scale, so this is awesome! Easier and time saving. Could you do a skill builder on roofs? I'm working on a gambrel roof carriage house, so it cuts into the interior walls a lot and it's a bit tricky figuring out how to manipulate the angels of walls for a newbie. Thanks!!

My apologies for the noob question. But how did you activate transparency on the image at 3:41. Would that have been View / Face Style / X-ray? Thank you

Are there plans for the future to add the ability to import PDF files directly in on the Windows version? I know for me that is a VERY important feature.

Quite often in my consultant engineer's business I'll get CAD files which have been issued as PDF (they don't want you messing with their original CAD files). I'll often want to take them into Windows SketchUp Pro to visualise or assess things - but I'll hit the no-PDF-in-Windows-version brickwall. But I found a solution. If you have Windows SketchUp Pro and your PDF has been saved from a CAD, you can use the excellent Able2Extract (www.investintech.com/) to convert the PDF to DWG or DXF. Then you can import the DWG/ DXF into SketchUp Pro. I've tried and bought PDF to DWG converters but they tend to lose detail. Able2Extract converts the CAD PDF extremely well enough to work with (you will need to set the settings right though).

I use Bluebeam Extreme to view PDFs, so it's pretty quick to export a page as a png or jpeg. If you need it in DXF format, I use Inkscape which is free and works pretty well converting from PDF to DXF

Aron...Thank You for these videos. I think and feel, your screen is "too big"...the details become too small, and I can't read the text of your menus etc. PS: I am viewing on a 17". Greetings from Old Eye Jakob.

I'm viewing on a 4K 43" screen and it is still impossible to view the menu items. No video needs to be created on such a high res screen if they are using it for instruction.

I use sketchup 8, and missed in your instructions on how you re-scaled the hand drawing. After you drew line and measured it you said it should be 12 ft. You then right clicked and some how the drawing mysteriously re-scaled itself. Please explain the steps on how you re-scaled. Thanks.

I have the same question!
@pauldalia2625
@pauldalia2625 7 лет назад
I'm using the current version of sketchup, so assuming version 8 is still the same: After using the tape measure tool, you can type an actual measurement. If you are editing a group, it will prompt you to resize the group to the measurement you typed, if you are not editing a group, it will prompt you to resize the entire model

Sounds like a good question to bring to our forum (forums.sketchup.com). Scale works the same, regardless of OS or platform, so it is possibly an issue of missing a step or a problem with your computer. Either way, the helpful folks on the forum should be able to help!

Helped me not at all. I simply need to trace an outline of a 3-view of an airplane, do some re-scaling and save the outline as an image file. Not at all to the point and a whole lot of talking.

doesn't work at all. All the tape measure does is make a guideline. Nor resize option. Sketchup doesn't behave the way the traing videos say it does. Why would anyone want to pay money for this?

Your software comes up with a big (/) NO when I try to drop an image... how to I get the software out of Idiot mode? (this is a blank document, created just before)... I LOVE how you also TELL ME WHY IT IS A (/) instead of just saying NO.. (Oh, Kidding here, no software actually thinks about the user experience - there is an assumption that you are a Author of the software, or have been using it for 10 years before you can do simple things... ) This software just seems like garbage to me, easy for some things, Insane hard for others.. like using an image to trace.. Or, tracing an image automatically like CorelDraw did back in 1998... Out of my trial period, so I'm assuming I have no functionality left in the software... (can't do this unless you 'upgrade' or something crazy??)
@AaronMakingStuff

Dropping images only works on Mac, with the supported formats. The best way to get help with using or learning SketchUp is through our forum (forums.sketchup.com). It’s much easier to walk through issues there than here, via RU-vid comments.
