Kicking Horse, British Columbia. This segment from Warren Miller's "HERE, THERE & EVERYWHERE" features one of North America's largest ski resorts, and also the self-proclaimed "champagne powder capital of Canada." And if you've been lucky enough to ski there, you probably wouldn't disagree with that statement. But the real magic of Kicking Horse lies in its ski patrollers... they are the backbone of the mountain.
Staring out over the vast mountain expanses, with the rising sun glistening on the crystalline snow, makes for a significantly better "view from the office" than the typical cubicle, and these ski patrollers would choose that first option, any day. Professional big mountain skiers, Kaylin Richardson, Matt Elliott, and Marcus Caston, would also all have to agree with that conclusion, especially after this epic time spent ripping around KHMR.

Ski patrol should be the highest paid department on the entire mountain, on *every* mountain. And I say that as a Snowmaker in Colorado. Patrollers put their own lives on the line to serve, protect and save people every day. Patrol always has my utmost respect.

I started at the age of 16, Patrolling Ski Acres at Snoqualmie Pass in the mid 60s. Made my way to the German Alps, and then back to Lake Tahoe. Great days, great people, and the idea that we were there to help was a fantastic feeling!

On a bad day Kicking horse can be brutal. On the best days it's got to be one of the best hills in the world for a very advanced skier. Unbelievable terrain off of T1. I grew up skiing there and it's pretty hard to find challenging terrain when going to other resorts now.

This was very entertaining! When I made my living patrolling one of the biggest mountains in the US, yes it was very serious, but we also pigged as much powder as we could while setting up the lower mountain since avalanche terrain is usually on the upper mountain. It was a well earned perk for a tough job! We also had secret stashes, but they were legitimately closed to the public for real safety concerns. One of those places was a narrow slot with a cliff band in it. The char ran over the top. I was standing at the top of the cliff figuring out my line one day when a guy on the lift looked down and instantly named the "run" .... he dubbed it "shear madness". Such a great name!

I patrolled 17 years, 15 of them as first aid instructor. I worked in oil and gas as an engineer and got moved to a different city every few years. The first objective once we found a new house was to find out where Canadian Ski Patrol was trolling. Back then it was common to kick the volunteers out and hire paid patrollers. After a few years hills realized their 6 paid pro trollers did not match 23 volunteers on weekends.

@@owencoventry2435 How is Schweitzer? We live here in Idaho and I've only skied Sun Valley and that was for free because we played the Sun Valley Suns hockey team in a full contact tournament. Sun Valley was awesome! But I've always wondered how Brundage, Tamarack, Schweitzer, Lookout, Pomerelle, Lost Trail, Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole compare. I have skied most of the Utah resorts, Park City, Alta, Snowbird, Deer Valley because my brother went to the U and played hockey while also almost becoming a professional skier and I tried following him down those double blacks at Alta and man those were steep.

Honestly, when I see nothing but full side to side ski cuts (no fun turns) when I get up there to slay pow, I know one of two things is true; either conditions are extra spicy, or whoever did control on that route is new. Go ahead and ski, you've earned it

I met a patroller who started down the path for just that reason, lol. Maybe first chair was just the icing on the cake for him. Snowboard instructor from Tahoe (Northstar and Squaw) here: they do get fresh turns...they know the snow and terrain better than most people at the resort. If you ask, they usually know the BEST spots at their mountain on any given day. And thank them, dag nabbit, ski patrol is in a way the glue that binds a resort together; they do more than you think, much more than you usually see as just a skier or snowboarder.

@@MrCharleyq As for my answer to these custom settings, read my previous comment again. As for the manual control, I prefer to push the portafilter for the whole time and release the push to stop grinding, because releasing is quicker and less motion than pushing again, thus more control and less spilling. I release just when grains start spilling to the brims of the portafilter.
