March 6 -- Mother Nature has been especially cruel this drought year to the ski resorts in Lake Tahoe. Snowpack is 25 percent of the historical average and January 2015 was the driest on record. But Barrett Burghard, who has been making snow at Heavenly for 27 years, isn't too concerned about California's ongoing drought. His team of snow makers and groomers have been working around the clock, and as of early March, they've succeeded in opening nearly half of the resorts 4,800 acres for skiing. my dog Southern California is warm. But Eastern Northern California is cold in the winter. I know this because I live in Southern California and I go skiing in Northern California all the time in the winter season.

even in socal with Big Bear considered, you can ski in the morning and get a tan on the beach in mexico on the same day. 16'-17' season, Tahoe got over 700 inches of snow....

cool, but it's a complete waste of water. most of that snow melt won't reach any waster reservoir. they probably use more water in one day than an entire city would use in 3 days. Seriously, leave ski resorts to places in the northern hemisphere where its actually possible to have a ski resort open annually without snow makers.

I live in South Lake Tahoe, and you are so wrong. The water easily reaches lake Tahoe, since Heavenly's base is under a mile away from the shore. We get bad years, last year was great and this year is atrocious. We need these to keep the tourism dollars flowing so that the town's economy, which literally depends on heavenly, kirkwood, and sierra, doesn't collapse.

This comment has no merit. The Sierra IS in the Northern hemisphere, receives more snow than nearly every range in America and most all water/snow that falls in the Tahoe basin drains into Lake Tahoe. Additionally enough water evaporates from the surface of Lake Tahoe in one day in the summer that would supply the city of Los Angeles with water for 48 hours. And the Saints suck.

My local ski resort has the most snowmaking on the east coast (holiday valley ellicotville New York) 95% covered in snow machines and they run them as much as possible.

Ski industry is a huge part of Tahoe's economy, no skiing=bad economy. Plus, like the other guy said it goes straight back in the lake

Alisher Shatekov They’re not consumimg it so they’re not wasting a drop of water. And if you’re worried about the electricity, it’s better than millions of people flying or driving north.
