This video presents an outline for teaching front hip circles. You'll notice the emphasis is on a straight and tight entry, as opposed to the butt-up-then-arch-back-throw-head/chest-around technique many people use, despite the JO compulsory text specifically saying not to do that.
Thank you for watching, your support is encouraging.
As always, I don't own this music. Please don't sue me.

We were having free time on bars today, and I decided to try front hip circles for the first time and on my like 10th try I did it

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your drills. I started teaching my prep bronze kids (who will compete the new level 4 next year) fhc three weeks ago using your drills. 5 girls got their front hip circles today! These girls are all 5-8 years old, and had no introduction to fhc prior to three weeks ago. Thank you!

These drills are fabulous! As a beginning adult gymnast, I'm in desperate need of drills and these have helped me advance quickly.

this was very helpful. we just tried this with my daughter who has never attempted a front hip circle before. Within 15 minutes, she can almost do one by herself now.

awesome, when my daughter has troubles with something I always end up finding a video w/ drills for that certain skill by you. She got her level 3 bar dismount this year from a suggestion of yours (via a msg) and now she is starting level 4 and needs her front hip circle. Thanks for all the great work!

@bamagym I didn't say "straight arms." I said "straight FHC." Show me a video where a girl stays straight all the way around the bar (flat hips, no pike) in a front hip circle the same way they can stay straight all the way around the bar for a back hip circle. The force of a cast helps generate momentum around the bar for a BHC, so you can push and be straight all the way around. No cast before a FHC, so you have to make some shape change to pick up speed, hence, piking.

@bamagym I would love to see video of your kids doing straight FHC all around the bar.

Keep doing see-saws and just remind them to squeeze their butts and push on the bar. It's just strength.

hypothetically thinking is the front hip circle essentially a skill for young gymnasts to learn how to place their hands/grip for being able to re fold over the bar for when it comes time to learn kips, you could say just finish like your front hip circle... bam a kip :)

Awesome videos - needed this for a refresh on how to get them looking better

@bama gym- the pike is also helpful for the finishing position with toes in front. Ending with a straight body will make it more difficult for them to understand how to finish out of their kips and especially for casting.

This looks so great. My daughter just can't get it….but she's not getting coaching ANYTHING like this. So frustrating! Too bad we don't live in Michigan! ;)

I was doing see saws with my girls, and even the ones who have FHCs close there hips too early and lose their hollow. what can I do or tell them to prevent that?

I have a question about front hip circles. At my gym they teach to lift to hollow, then to drop and arch before falling. I have never been taught this way and everywhere I find says no arch. Are they wrong?
@JAOVideos
@JAOVideos 10 лет назад
I would not teach front hip circles like that. Also the JO Compulsory book specifically says not to.
@alphastormeex9468

Thank you for reply! Great video. I thought that was weird. So does it specifically say in the book: "Do not arch" because when I told my boss he said they need to have a straight body line and an arch counts as a straight body but pike doesn't and it is easy for the kids to accidentally pike which IS a deduction. It still doesn't seem right to me. I mean, I have never seen or heard anywhere to arch. :?

Stormee Johnson Page 57 of the JO text says "maintain a straight hollow position (no arch)." under the description of how to enter the front hip circle.
