i want to say thank you for having this channel. as someone who is finding herself at a crossroad with where to focus my career in public health, your channel has been monumental. thank you, thank you!
I liked and learned about many aspects of public health in this video presentation made by Dr. Greg Martin. Many thanks to Dr. Greg Martin. I learned about four areas of competencies needed to be effective in public health, and importance on management, leadership, and governance.
Hey mate, your teaching style is exceptional. Great analogies, metaphors and concrete examples. I taught for nine years and rarely saw educators who have this capacity. You also strike me as an educator who is in service of the students and not themselves and that's another rare quality. Cracking job, mate. All the best.
Really helpful for me as I venture into the beautiful realm of Public Health. There's always room to learn no matter where you are! Thank you, Dr. Martin!

Dr. Greg, This is one of the very few motivating content I have come across. I think it's time I advance my knowledge in public health/Global health by going for MPH or related course, to complement my M.Sc. Social Work - Community Development and B.Tech in Animal Production in Health.

+Mohammed Liswi thanks for the comment. Yes, too often people land up in a position with responsibilities without having the skills needed. Management is something that we can all make an effort to learn about.

Yes, management skills are sorely undervalued in public health. Solicitation of feedback and managerial knowledge of the nitty gritty of the work is not there in my state agency. The managers see their work as being easy; they simply decree their ideas the best (authoritarian style) and ignore the festering issues in ancient business processes, only paying lip service to the idea of making improvements long enough to zone out for the day on poorly organized conference calls. The managers are lucky if they have someone they supervise that actually cares about the processes, but it will be an uphill battle to get change from that starting point. Public health in America must be in an even sorer shape than the system of Ireland, where there is at least acknowledgement of the value of public life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I'm still only a Trauma and Heart Surgeon with Master and PhD in Surgery... But passionated for Public and Global Health. As Brazilian I dealt with serious problems working in a Public Medical School - Teaching Hospital for 14 years... I'm living in US for 10 years but I still didn't find a way of being really involved with the Public-Global Health in this country as I've always been in my country. You had been an inspiration and motivation. A mentorship! Thank you for supporting all of us... that like me, pursue to be part of "your world".
Marise - its great to know that there are people like you out there who are so passionate and enthusiastic about global health! I'm really glad that you're part of this community!!!

This is a great video, I especially like the quandrants. It gave me a better idea of where to focus my knowledge seeking to become a stronger public/global health candidate. I just completed my masters in international development and worked in Liberia for 6 years in the education and health sectors. I have functional knowledge (quadrant 3) and currently taking online courses through CDC to gain the technical knowledge (quadrant 1), so it is necessary for me to get a second masters? Do you have any suggestions of my approach for breaking in to the field?
Thanks for the question Wanneh. My feeling is that if you already have a masters and you are clearly making an effort to broaden your knowledge and skill, you really don't need another masters degree. International development is a great stepping stone to global health and there are a lot of overlapping themes and issues. My suggestion is that you identify a development issue that you're interested in that has significant implications for health and focus on that. Good luck!!
I enjoyed the video. Even though I'm not in the field of public health I appreciate your well presented, knowledgeable and passionate explanations of the public health landscape. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment. Re the money that you can earn, it depends entirely on the kind of organisation that you land up working for. NGOs for example tend to pay less than UN agencies like the WHO. There is quite a range.

Thank you for your extremely useful video (indeed the whole series is excellent). I am a junior doctor working in the UK with an interest in a career in Global Health. I am planning to do a Master's at LSHTM in the next year or so. In the video you mentioned various online resources for developing in skills in management, leadership and governance. Other than doing a course in Excel or an MBA, are there any particular online courses that you would recommend for those at an earlier stage of their career such as myself to develop these skills?
Hi Adam - thanks for the question (sorry about the delay in getting back to you). I'm actually in the thick of creating a video that deals specifically with this issue - I'll have the video up in the next few weeks (so watch this space).
Its a fantastic video filled with information that is highly pertinent. I was just wondering if you think that being a pharmacist and having a master's degree in public health gives me some sort of advantage over other people in the same field; more specifically, do you think that the pharmacy can add some sort of advantage to the public health master; more specifically, do you think that my experience working in a pharmacy can help me find a job in the public health field?
Wow! What a great video with very relevant information. I am close to finishing my masters in Public health and I am interested in healthcare data analysis. Please can you kindly tell me what databases and softwares I need to learn to achieve this. Thanks

I toke two years off for personal reasons and now I want to go back to the field of PH, but I feel very overwhelmed and don't know where to start. Thank you in advance.

Hi Greg, great videos! I've learned quite a lot about GH from your channel and especially from the first 3 videos in the 'Careers in Global Health' series. Will you be posting the fourth video in the series anytime soon (i.e. 'organizations that you can apply to')? Really looking forward to it! Keep up the good work!

Thank you for useful information ! I'm graduating from school this year and I understand that I want to work in a field that would somehow combine medicine, math and ecinomics, so I figured that Public or Global Health will be a right choice. However, I'm still uncertain, whether to start right off with Bachelor in Public health or to take a different approach and start with Bachelor in Management and then do a MPH degree. I know that I'll certainly need some knowledge of management principles, but I have a feeling that in case of starting with management I'll miss a lot of crucial skills and knowledge that are taught during Bachelor in PH. What would you recommend ?
Thanks for the interesting question Nikita. So the short answer is that there isn't a simple answer but I'll give you what insights I can. There are two ways of looking at this. On the one hand, at an early stage in your career, the most important (and sometimes difficult) thing for you to do is to try and understand scope of public health (and so position yourself to gather the needed skills to add value). In that sense, doing the Bachelor in Public Health would be a great start. On the other hand, if you're doing to do an MPH anyway, getting the combination of management and public health as complimentary skill sets will make you very marketable once you start looking for a job. Its a tricky one. There are no wrong options here. The important thing is that you're passionate about whatever you study - enjoy it! Good luck (sorry about the vague answer).

Very informative Dr. Martin! I am in a process of applying to various global health programs. I have just come back from two years in Tanzania volunteering and learning about the developing countries health issues. I have a quick question to you. Is there a big difference between Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Science in Global Health? After doing research, I found different schools offer different programs... and I am a little lost here..... Thank you!
Thanks for the question Minkyung. An MPH is Masters in Public Health and will focus mostly on the skills and competencies that you need to be effective within a national health program. Masters degrees that focus on "global health" usually dig a little deeper on issues that affect many countries (they often focus on developing countries). Each program will have its own strengths and emphasis. Good luck! And enjoy!! :)
Hi Mohamed - thanks for the question. There are many ways that pharmacists can get involved with public health. Access to medicines, is for example, an important part of public health and needs people with a pharmacy background to get involved.

PH administration is more about ensuring that the administrative tasks that need to get done in order to make the system work are all done. I don't know much about it to be honest and so can't really comment on the market value.
I am thinking of doing a master's degree, only that I am undecided in whether to do a master's degree in public health or global health. I like the global health approach more, however I think a MPH will give me more skills to work in the field. What would be your advice?
Thanks for the question Octavio - its a common question and there is no simple answer. It depends a lot on what you want to do down the line. Also - remember, what you get out of a program (whatever it is) is up to you. I will say this though - if you do either master program, you'll land up gaining similar skills and a similar knowledge base (just in slightly different contexts)
Hi there - no a masters degree isn't an absolute requirement but it certainly helps a lot in terms of giving you a good sense of the scope of work being done in the global health space and providing you with the necessary skills. There are also a lot of jobs out there that do require that you have a masters degree in order to apply. That said, there are lots of people working in public health that come from different backgrounds and don't have a masters in public health. If you are able to, however, I would recommend it.

What a great video! I am looking to getting a doctorate degree either a PhD or DrPH. For the long-term, I see myself working either as a technical adviser or Country Project Director focusing on infectious disease or monitoring and evaluation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Which degree would be more suitable for this role? Any feedback is greatly appreciated :)
Hi Tarikwa - thanks for the question. My feeling is that a DrPH would be the best next step for you. Doing a PhD is the right step if you're wanting to work as an academic. A DrPH would be a better fit for the kind of career that you described. Hope that helps. Greg
Hello I am about to graduate with a BS in Public health, would you recommend getting a Masters' in health administration or would an MBA be better? (also thank you for this amazing video)
Hi there - its an interesting question - and there isn't a simple answer sadly. I does depend a lot on what kind of work you'd like to do down the line. An MBA will serve you well in whatever field you land (but the value of it will be more important as you hit mid-career really). If you're wanting to work at an organisation like the WHO then an MPH (or equivalent) is usually a requirement.

Dear Greg... Could you please advise what position can one with an MD in child health get in WHO or UNICEF? Also could you please suggest how to apply ?
The best way to understand what WHO and UNICEF are looking for is to download the Terms Of Reference for some of their existing job adverts and read through them carefully. You'll be able to find job adverts on their respective webpages.
Global Health with Greg Martin Thanks dear Greg . Could I ask you a very specific thing- Can one get any job related to clinical medicine (I’m a pediatrician) in un? Sorry if I bother you repeatedly as I know it’s the third time you are replying to my queries.
sir thank you so much for that informative videos. would it make a difference if one do master of science in international health instead of master in public health/ or what is the basic diff between the two?
+Sunny Santiago Muniz Tashi Tsering thanks for the question. A masters i public health is quite general and usually focusses on public health issue at a national level (some have a module on global health). An MSc in International health will focus on global health issues and is also likely to cover the basic public health science covered in an MPH. It all depends on what you're wanting to do after your studying.

Hi I had a question. I am currently a US pharmacy student (finishing my first year) and I really, really would like to work for WHO when I graduate (I'll have a doctorate in Pharmacy when I finish and I already have a Bachelor's in Biochemistry). I was wondering if a MPH was absolutely necessary in order to become employed by WHO, or if it just looks nice on one's CV? Thank you.
+Li G Hi there - the MPH is not an absolute requirement but it does depend a little on what job you're applying for (some of the advertised jobs do stipulate having an MPH as a requirement). Many of the jobs require that you have a masters level education. The number of years of experience that you have in a given field is also important.
Hi there - thanks for the question Pramod. I'm delighted that you're interested in public health. As a starting point there are many fields that you could study (depending on your interests). Ultimately you should do a Masters in Public Health at some point but as a starting point you could study biology (if you're interested in infectious disease), maths (if you're interested in statistical analysis), politics (if you're interested in health policy), psychology (if you're interested in behaviour change to improve health) etc. etc. I suggest that you study something that you're interested in and you'll find the connections to public health.
Hi Musanda - thanks for the question. I suggest that the best next step is to either do a masters degree in public health or try to find an entrance level position in an organisation in which you can get some experience (even consider a research position in your local university, or a local NGO).
