Just place Messi in 1987 and Maradona in 2018. Very different. No tackles from behind. Both are tough Argentinians. You cannot bully them. But Maradona rode most of the reckless tackles. Not sure if Messi would. Maradona on a carpet and protected. Just watch his goal of the century in 1986 and his goal against Belgium. Thes are scored when it matters. And Argentina 1986 was not as good as the 2022. The difference was Diego.

Consistency is something and skills is something else. Skills is a gift. Consistency is a hard work. Maradona's skills is a way better than Messi and does it more beautiful. The only player that plays as beautiful as Maradona is Ronaldinho.
Messi led by example through his willingness to burden the responsibility in matches whilst having a humble and nurturing nature, which made his teammates willing to go to war for him.
@@Jeremy-rx2mb That's true. But I think all this comparison makes no sense. Diego played in much brutal era where defender break your legs and still get away with it without a card/ yellow. It was so hard. Also the strengths of team 86 was so harder than 22, also the pens Argentina recieved ,no chance for penalties like that in 80s. And Diego was 53 times fouled in 86 alone more brutally.Still performance wise Diego was clearly higher. Did everything from tackles to interceptions clearence to create and score, and two of greatest WC performance ever. Diego's achievement difficulty is levels above tbh.
Seems like Messi have no chrisma but he have very strong leadership tho, saw Messi led his team in 2021 copa and 2022 WC, feels like the team and fight and die for him, and it seems to me thats exceptional leadership required for that to happen
This comparison is unfair. Messi has always been in the best teams, supported by the world's top players. Maradona's prime was at Napoli -a mid-tier team. Can you name any of his teammates?
And in the napoli, maradona never lift Champions League Thropy? He cant even lift the team 2 win Champions League. Did you know, maradona even play in barcelona? And he just to be trouble maker😂
Messi is GOAT. but Maradona is the player who made Argentina world famous , before Maradona most people of other continents except America and Europe didn't heared about Argentina. Maradona was the creator of passion for football and Argentina to billions of people like me who were not Argentinians .
maradona existed in 80s with such a technique..unbelievable ..but messi was a monster in his 19 itself..and the longetivity in his carreer cant be touched
Agreed. Maradona's greatness is his insurmountable talent. Messi's is reigning at the throne of the sport effortlessly for so long. Just can't compare them one to one.
Maradona antes de los años 80 ya brillaba en el Club Argentino junior que le hizo ganar un campeonato , después paso a Boca junior dónde también brillo luego al Barcelona ...
maradona at 19 already make messi irrelevant... it is not even close... messi is maybe on his bestest day ever 3/10 on maradona scale and it is only in the 2014 mundial
People who are old enough to witness Maradona during his prime will all agree that Maradona was more dangerous to the defenders than Messi. Nobody was comparable to him during his time, not even the Ballon d’or winners (nobody cared back then). He was unstoppable by half of the team (5-6 players) in WC ‘86 (England, Belgium, Italy, etc.). The only way to stop him was to tackle him from behind. Messi has achieved much more awards with his professionalism, discipline, consistency and longevity. But Messi’s prime was nowhere near Maradona’s prime.

Maradona was the SOUL of his teams. He can single-handedly beat a top team in the world, England, Brazil...not to mention that he brought Napoli all the way from the bottom to the top! Nobody could handle the ball more comfortably than him. Messi can approach Maradona's technical skills, but nowhere close to Maradona's leadership, even with his world cup.
Funny than Maradona only won one World Cup and never won cops de America . What an incredible leadership he must have had ,To never even once play a champions league final. So overrated .

Hi Argentinian here, 42 years old. Apart from all the comments in the video and the followers, I can compare Messi and Maradonna as impacting our country: Maradonna was far much more impactful as a referent, idoll, magician. Messi is famous and so on, but Maradonna has extra merchandising for children, even small dolls to buy or get in different campaigns at that time in our country (and I think in other foreign countries too)
tell them no on touch diego armando maradona... tell them ... the truth is that maradona is the best athlete of all time.. no one gets close... he was not of this world divine!

@RandolphOgbodutech if you would have put Messi in Napoli at the same time and age of Maradona, Messi would have been toasted in Italy. Maradona made Napoli champions twice in league titles in 1987 and 1990. The 1987 Coppa Italia, the 1990 Supercoppa Italiana, and the European trophy with the 1989 UEFA Cup. In the 1986 World Cup he was key for Agentina to win it, and what sets Diego on top of Messi is his leadership an attribute that Messi always lacked.
Not at all, i am an argentine who grow up watching messi, but the best maradona was incredible, close to the best messi, you can watch what he did in 1986 world cup, some may say he was even better...
Yes that's so clear ,people are more influenced by Maradona's skills during training or warming ,but in official games Messi is better than him and than all players ,Messi the strenghth and angle of every touch of the ball is well measured to put him in the best situation and the most efficace position for the next touch ,this quality none can reach the level of Messi none

One can debate that Diego was even more skillful. But I'd also add in favour of Lio: adaptability, teamwork, resiliency, discipline and professionalism. Diego would never fit in so many differents playing schemas, diff coachs and forwards.
@njldst2007 Maradona was great,I personally knew him as he dated my Argentine American wife and became friends with her! Football was much slower in Maradona's era. This was a significant disadvantage for skilled players and also dramatically decreased scoring opportunities. You deliberately did not talk about leadership qualities and charisma because you know that they are missing in Messi. He also deliberately did not talk about the levels of the clubs, such as the intermediate level, that Maradona played for because he is a person who loves challenges, but he is a revolutionary in passion. I also deliberately did not talk about the levels of the players that each of the two was playing with or playing against, because it is known far and wide that the levels and skills of players globally at the level of all playing positions in the seventies, eighties, and nineties were the highest period in the history of football. Look at the generations of Brazil, Argentina, Italy, England, Germany, France and the Netherlands. The most important thing is that you deliberately did not talk about the system and laws of the individual awards for Ballon d’Or, which were given to European players only until the year 1993. All of this gives preference to Maradona, but believe me, decades from now, they will remember Maradona before any other player. Because he is the greatest in history

I like football because of Maradona. I always considered Maradona the best player ever, until one day in 2008 a friend showed me a video of Messi against Getafe. I consider Messi to be the incarnation of Maradona. But day by day, I see Messi increasingly developing and surpassing Maradona. And 1 thing Maradona doesn't have is consistency.
Messi is a great legendary footballer, no doubt but Maradona is the greatest of all time. Football was a great complication during Maradona's time. No beautiful playground, no good fellow footballers, no good physician, no good adviser, No modern assistance etc. Considering all issues, Maradona is the teacher and inspiration of Messi because Messi learned many things from Maradona's play whereas Maradona did not learn anything from Messi since Messi was not at his time. So Maradona is the Winner.
@@mikoajdariuszmackowiak2141 it depends on what do you consider ‘artistic’. I think I call it ‘creative’. I don’t blame you if you like that style more than the very simple style of Messi. Like Ronaldinho. But I do consider Messi’s simplicity to be extremely artistic. Much more than any other player. That plus his effectiveness and consistency, that’s what puts him above everybody else imho. Add in how he’s the best of all time in so many areas like shooting and passing. At the end, it’s impossible to compare. I grew up seeing Maradona as the goat. Then came Messi. You like who you like. That’s fine. I can tell you exactly the same argument: You have to see Messi’s artistic goals that Maradona never scored. 😉

By looking at stats alone without watching the full time matches, will definitely be misleading. Every matches that Maradona played (no matter winning or losing, scoring goals or not), they were the battles between Maradona against the entire teams trying to stop him by illegal tackles and fouls. The only strategy was to stop Maradona in order to win. If he played with today ruleset back then, half (4-6 players) of the teams would have gotten the red cards.
Most people argue that Messi couldn't have played in the roughness of Maradona's time, however, there is another huge and perhaps more impactful difference; in the past, defenders gave much more space to play, physical conditions, pressing, tactics, were much easier for dribblers and play makers. So, perhaps Messi would have suffered the kicks and aggressiveness but Maradona would have suffered a lot nowadays too, with much more effective and faster defenses. It's absurd to compare them
Are you insane !!!? Maradona played in Napoli. Messi have much more equipment witch Maradona didn't have. Messi played alongside so many super star witch maradona didn't
Maradona's lack of professionalism and self discipline is not suitable for the goat title. People saying he will outperform Messi if he was born in this era, the reality is he would be next Ronaldinho in this era😂
No saben nada muchachos, Messi es un crack, pero Maradona fue inigualable, hizo grande a clubes pequeños, el campeón de los humildes. Único, Maradona was so much better than Messi
Maradona alone led mid-level teams to win league titles and continental cups, and he created what Argentina football is today meaning what all the players of subsequent generations wanted to become like him and reach his level including Messi.
In terms of making teammates around him play better, it's clearly Messi either in domestic or European league or international level. Other than that some might have a different opinion but to me, Messi has made a lot of incredible things on regular basis and his moves looked really smooth but they were so effective.
Messi needs very good team to be champion but Maradona only needs a team. In the 86 world cup in the Argentina national team there were 4-5 players including Maradona who played in europe and none of them except Valdano played for a top club after the cup. it was even said that there were 10 mediocre players and one genius in the Argentina national team. in the 80s the Italian league was the most expensive league with the most important stars and Napoli was never the best in terms of squad but it had Maradona. so the Italian league was what the premier league is today, comparing it is like playing for West Ham and fighting for the premier league title for 5 seasons. the championships of the national team where Maradona played and the championships of Napoli are miracle championships and they only became champions thanks to Maradona's magical talent. Messi is the best player but after Maradona

Messi hangs and walks around the right side of the pitch and drifts inwards to the centre occasionally for about 10 minutes whilst Maradona would cover all sides of the pitch for the full 90 minutes but yet Messi wins endurance.
Watching Messi play is like watching the most beautiful movie in the history of the world. You relate to the movie and it make you feel lot of things. But you feel some distance, you are in your house and the movie is on the screen. You got to use your imagination to believe the movie is real. Watching Maradona play is not like watching a movie. Is like you are living through Maradona. You feel completely represented by him. You are dreaming of being him. He makes you feel that he would do anything for you. Is like virtual reality compared to a movie. And thats because Maradona's personality. Messi maybe achieved that 1 or 2 times in his life but with Maradona you feel that way every minute of his life. Messi is the best player in history but Maradona was the most magical soul on a field touching your heart on every second of it, and being the best player in history also. I'm 44 so I watched both of them.
